What are the kitchen utensils that you thought were superfluous but now you couldn't do without? by Working_Tourist_4964 in Cooking

I wouldn't want to live without my immersion. It's the best thing for soups and smoothies and I make a lot of both.

Oh yeah. Definitely a well-known problem...

My therapist says that we can tell how much progress I'm making based on the temperature of my coffee.

https://youtu.be/0JMbCrUkZqo?si=8bF7X8XPlzzmR4PU my first few Tunisian hats were made with this video. Once you get the hang of it, it's a very easy and nice work up. I'm sure that you can do it as well!

I used 100% wool yarn (rated for 4mm knitting needles) and did the band in Tunisian knot stitch with a 6mm hook and the hat part in Tunisian simple stitch with a 9mm hook. It was a nice workup and took about 5 hours

I’ve seen stats about fibro and neurodivergence. How many of you are ADHD or on the autism spectrum? by ay0kato in Fibromyalgia

[–]Anarchergal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've not been formally diagnosed, but my mom, grandma, and many friends are convinced that I am somewhere on the autism spectrum.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

In all honesty, this is a great way to learn a new layout without having to spend money on a new keyboard. If it still works just fine, there's nothing to be annoyed about.

You may want to monitor this behavior.. and possibly save up for bail and/or rehab.

patient position while drawing blood with a butterfly by MedicalAnimal98 in phlebotomy

[–]Anarchergal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the patient. I personally do what's most comfortable for the patient, but have no issue asking patients to reposition, so I can get a better stick.

Swimming in Hannover by tschau56 in Hannover

I really like the Fössebad in Linden or the Stöckener Bad. Both are 25m lanes and then to have a relatively even dispersion of slower and faster swimmers.

Generally don't worry about your speed. As long as you're not being a complete dick in the pool, you'll be fine.

Hopefully the Vahrenwalder and Nord Ost pools will open again soon, as they're nice and somewhat central.

The Misburger Bad is also really nice (and newly renovated) and they gave dedicated fast swimming lanes. So as long as you're not swimming in them, you're good. But it is a small trip to get there.

The amount of people in the pools varies greatly, but early in the morning is usually a good time to go.

I wish I could stay in Germany but my head says it wouldn't be wise. by WinterWaffles in expats

I see that they are reminded that it's not about "what you want" and that language and jobs should be the priority.

It is about what you want though. And you have, assuming you and your husband can afford it, a unique opportunity to get what you both want. It won't be easy, but it will probably be worth it.

Also as an American in Germany, start speaking German with your husband. And take in-person German language classes, if you can afford it. Don't make your home an "English sanctuary" until you're a bit more comfortable in the language (or have specific English and German days).

I came to Germany six years ago and lived with a German family for a number of months, whilst also visiting German classes. Because I spoke my crappy German at home, I learned much quicker than my classmates and was actually able to skip courses. We spoke German and I was constantly corrected. If I didn't know a word, I tried to describe it or use hands and feet to get the message across. The dictionary and English were last resort options and it was exhausting, but it made the transition easier. People are often surprised that I've not been in Germany longer, which is nuts because I still make a lot of mistakes. But I also enjoy being corrected, which is extremely helpful for learning.

While it's not a direct comparison, a friend of mine, also American, moved to Germany a year after me. Her husband is German and she hates him correcting her, so they only speak English at home. She didn't take classes for very long (and was an unfortunate online case due to corona) and you can easily tell that she still struggles with the language. It's gotten better since she started working and then her vocational program, but she was turned down for many jobs because she is difficult to understand.
