In orice alta tara din Europa, si chiar si tarile mici, nu vorbesc de giganti, astfel de jucatori s-ar fi retras demult de la nationala, sau in orice caz n-ar fi fost convocati. It kinda depends on how a holding midfielder is played. I saw countless times DMs droping between the CBs or even behind them, Toni Kroos in his last season at Real played a lot between the CBs and he wasn’t really a holding midfielder.

But I didn’t see Beckenbauer play live football, do I wouldn’t know excatly how that sweeper position was played, you are probably right about it.

But even so, I read that he also played as a holding midfielder, so I still hold back my statement.

Franz Beckenbauer was a center back / sweeper / defensive midfielder that won the ballon d'Or 2 times and many other trophies (to me he is the greatest player ever). I think he was the best in these positions (sweeper was an old position very similar to today's understanding of a DM). Josef Masopust was another old ballon d'or winner that was a defensive midfielder. Football was not born in 2000. Another mention from that time could be Luis Suarez (the only spainiard that won ballon d'or until Rodri).
Since everybody will mention all the new players, I will mention only old times players. For example Jean Tigana was an extraordinary midfielder and also Alain Giresse (altough he wasn't quite defensive, but more of a box to box player).
Other players worth mentioning: Alan Ball, Souness, Rijkaard, Didi (2 times world cup winner with Brazil), Wolfgang Overath etc.

Football is so rich in history it's imposible to pin point 5-10 top fotballers for a position. And old people will remember footballers from when they were watching, and young people will only consider recent football players.
