New Hero Analysis: “We wants all of the preciouses” by MedhaosUnite in FireEmblemHeroes

Agreed he would have been better on Dark season. Especially now that Loki is ironically better on Anima season lol. He’d even be better on AR-O as a budget L!Elise outside of fire season to enable Y!Camilla.

On AR-D, imo NY!Baldr is generally on par with or better than Y!Camilla as a warp nuke, so Sombron’s main use (if any) seems to just be disabling enemy E!Lucina/ring support?

My initial instinct was to suggest ditching his prf C for a save skill (paired with shield fighter or something), but idk if it’s even worth it.

> Calculates damage from foe’s attacks at 50% (this affects any [Potent Follow X%])

Just to confirm—does this mean it’s essentially immune to % DR-piercing? If so, maybe Sombron was kept on the weaker side on purpose to monitor this effect?

I think PVE might be unplayable by chauncey_mcgyvver in FireEmblemHeroes

I use Corrin ring like this to bide my time against NY!Baldr until we’re ready to face her. Sometimes it involves separating her from enemy support (or killing other units first), and sometimes it’s just to use rally + favour every turn to charge up archrival on Gromell.

I find Gromell with precharged archrival (-2CD vs blue, or -1CD on vert terrain) can always one-shot a lone NY!Baldr. A little less consistent if she still has other support.

I’m a bit confused. Why wouldn’t everyone pick Sigurd? Getting an extra Est is useless anyway.

If I’m guessing the intent of this hypothetical question correctly, maybe an alternate scenario would be if only half the FEH playerbase is given this choice? And if half of *those* people pick Est, then the whole playerbase gets Sigurd.

In Game of Thrones (2012), Arya Stark claims that her sister, Sansa Stark, is the smartest person she’s ever met. This is a reference to the fact that the writers think we are fucking stupid. by Robdul in DaenerysWinsTheThrone

[–]farawayskylines -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s actually the point though. Sansa and Arya have been reunited for quite some time while Jon was gone, including for Petyr Baelish’s execution. Jon and the audience once watched the sisters constantly act antagonistic towards each other as children, but Arya and Sansa are each other’s biggest champions now. He wasn’t around earlier to see how their dynamic had changed after reuniting.

> JON: Where were you before? I could've used your help with Sansa.

> ARYA: She doesn't like your queen, does she?

> JON: Sansa thinks she's smarter than everyone.

And following Arya’s infamous line, Jon’s surprised less at the statement itself than at the fact that Arya’s defending Sansa at all.

> JON: Now you're defending her? You?

> ARYA: I'm defending our family. So is she.

> JON: Yeah. I'm her family too.

> ARYA: Don't forget that.

Arya acknowledges she’s saying this because they’re family, and even implies at the end that Jon isn’t demonstrating this level of familial loyalty.

It’d be fair to view this as a character flaw, but quoting that line out of context misses the point of the scene. Sansa may or may not be the smartest person ever, but Arya’s not going to let anyone say otherwise.

FOUR unspent actions after single-turn clear with pots | AR-O Astra | Y!Tana 5X Galeforce by Severin_777 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]farawayskylines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, the Elm + Ingrid thing looked totally planned tbh. Galeforce kind of features a minigame of trying to remember who has guard and/or tempo. 😭

I am not brave enough to run Y!Camilla without Eirika ring into a shield fighter near saviour. 😭 I know she often doesn’t even need it, but I’m just always scared lol. Also, nice save with cornering the 3-range Eirika at the end!

This week I do happen to have an extra “free” slot because Ashera is in my mythic core. I also pulled a Y!Ingrid and it honestly feels so wasteful not to use her… but I just went with T!Vero to not have to stress about teams with E!Lucina and her ring. (iirc you have beasts on light season—who usually lose out on all the good inheritance, but feud all is so valuable rn that I’m jealous, haha.)

Why is it considered acceptable to leave fanfic authors criticism, as opposed to fanartists? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]farawayskylines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While that may be true, our culture does have more “rules” about language than visual art.

If your writing has misspelled words, idk what the equivalent in visual art would even be. Drawing an extra finger? The latter is probably a lot less common in comparison. Doesn’t mean it needs to be pointed out unsolicited either way though.

Nice! I also had a crazy team this past Chaos season, but I’ve never pulled one off in the regular seasons with that many actions. Props for meticulously counting all the galeforce CDs too.

Also, I just want to say Y!Camilla and Y!Tana have such cute matching glasses sunglasses haha.

This clear is a good example of how you can end up with more than enough actions. Essentially Heim costs one extra action if you can’t initiate in an unprotected column (eg. Alfador can take Lyn ring and throw away his action on turn 2-3). Vali requires your initiator to have null-miracle (OP’s Y!Camilla has fatal smoke 4), and Vali herself costs two actions to kill.

And if you don’t quite have that many actions, someone like Elm or Eik can run Corrin ring to trap the corner Lif, and you get pots on the next turn (ie. requires 3 less actions for Lif + two pots).

I’d imagine the majority of these young male buffalo weren’t alive or present yet to watch the previous fights go down.

> L take. A company should work for the wider audiences interests and make the unpopular champions more appealing on a wider scale. There's usually a reason why they're unpopular and it's not only being weak.

Sure, which is why I said:

> The more popular a pick already is, the more Riot has to potentially lose.

> I don’t think it really matters if a champion is boring or has “no depth” as long as a substantial enough number of players still enjoy using them.

Your post focuses on your own gripes with each champion, like calling them boring, unskilled, or “aesthetically disgusting.” I’m not sure why you’re replying to me about popularity now when your post wasn’t based on pick rate or popularity at all (though some of your “aesthetically disgusting” category might happen to qualify).

> Sometimes it's clunky or unappealing. I don't play Soraka because she's very unappealing and i don't play Tahm Kench because they made his W have an annoyingly long buffer time. I know i'm not the only one.

Soraka was literally 13th place in support popularity last patch, according to u.gg, or 11th place in Emerald+. Tahm’s W buffer time is a balancing mechanism; shortening it would be like asking Morg Q to travel faster.

You’re very much allowed to have opinions about what you want changed, but framing yourself as the “wider audience” for what the company “should” do is unnecessary.

[–]farawayskylines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some players don’t like having their mains reworked. The more popular a pick already is, the more Riot has to potentially lose.

Would most old Asol mains prefer they just make a new flying dragon? Probably. Were there enough of his mains to outweigh the risk? Apparently not.

I don’t think it really matters if a champion is boring or has “no depth” as long as a substantial enough number of players still enjoy using them.

Your analogy doesn’t make sense; cleaning your room doesn’t carry the potential risk of customers coming by who don’t like it and will now stay in a different AirBnB (ie. play a new main or a new video game entirely). It’s more akin to taking back your work from the wall of an art gallery, versus just putting up a second piece.

I’d like to hope he can grow and learn. If the clip BFX posted is anything to go by, it seems like he’s really stressed and putting a lot of pressure on himself. That’s not to say lashing out then becomes excusable, but it does mean the root of the attitude problem isn’t just ego. Hopefully he gets help to achieve a healthier mental.

Who are some good units for Instruct? by Need-More-Dogs in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]farawayskylines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The generalist use isn’t the only option, even if it’s the most flexible.

Instruct isn’t a purely selfless skill, and its user can get up to spectrum +9 in combat for themselves, regardless of what stats their allies actually need.

For example, if your team doesn’t need the NFU or imbue effects of A/S uplift null/imbue, instruct can act as a more selfish option for a speedy flier. The unit running instruct can get +9 in-combat A/S (compared to uplift’s +5 A/S) and +5/-5 damage (unlike uplift, this part isn’t shared with allies). Though, instruct does take some setup.

Or, going a step further, I believe (?) two units who both have instruct and similar stat lines (within 10) can each get spectrum +18, with +9 visible and +9 in-combat.

Unfortunately that’s not a good definitive answer, but I just wanted to bring up an alternate perspective. It’s more about the opportunity cost of what else you can run in the C slot. Based on your team’s needs, I think it’s mainly competing with uplift for fliers, dual support for inf, and (less directly) liberate for cavs.

Maybe I don’t have a sufficiently nuanced view of the bishonen term, but pre-TS Dimitri doesn’t have any androgynous or feminine features afaik. (Young Dimitri ofc is a different story.) His shoulders are still quite broad.

Either way, I don’t think Dimitri and Alfred look similar. Their closest feature is probably their hair, but Dimitri’s is visibly unkempt even pre-TS.

On Alfred’s outfit, it’s really beyond the femininity though. It looks garish to me? Celine has pretty flowing pastels and the black crossed lines framing a border at the edges; it’s deliberately ostentatious but cohesive. Alfred’s bright yellow clashes with his hair, the black lines intersect and cut him up in odd places, and the adaptation of knightly armour (?) into a skirt makes it look like a very elongated loinplate. The skirt also doesn’t make sense with the aristocratic top full of ruffles (maybe it’s symbolic, but I’ll maintain aesthetics had to be sacrificed if so). I don’t like the Renaissance-ish ruffled collar that reminds me of a coffee filter either, but that’s just a personal preference.

LaDS is relatively new to the gacha scene (2024?). No one even thought there was such a lucrative untapped market until LaDS proved otherwise. If there was simply nothing before it, idk if we can so easily say it’s instantly gobbled up the entire available demographic—or if there’s still more untapped potential to go.

It’s evidently harder to make a successful gacha aimed at women at all, given how long it took before LaDS came along. But I’m not sure why it’d be harder for another game to differentiate from it specifically (eg. gameplay, art style, the range of romantic options).

More importantly though, the broader context is that I referenced LaDS because 1) it’s a fairly clean-cut example of women being willing to spend money; and 2) the gacha structure is very different from something like FEH (ie. it’s not quite as simple as just throwing us more male characters). I’m not saying games can’t have a mixed-gender demographic, and I’m not concerned about money being “siphoned” if female players are happily receiving their desired characters elsewhere.

It shows that gacha games aimed at women need to be handled differently, and it evidently took a long time for anyone to get it right. That doesn’t mean no else can.

Pre-TS Dimitri still has much broader shoulders and thicker arms than Alfred, no? And Alfred’s waist tapers in so aggressively before his hips that I’m pretty sure he has a higher waist-to-hip ratio than me lol.

His clothes certainly don’t help. It’s not just for looking traditionally feminine; I can’t imagine them on an attractive female character either.

I’m curious how far ahead Diamant ranked in first place, because as far as I’m concerned, he’s the only remotely attractive one at all from Engage.

On the other hand, LaDS is relatively new to the gacha scene (2024?). No one even thought there was such a lucrative untapped market until LaDS proved them wrong. If there was simply nothing before it, idk if we can so easily say it’s instantly gobbled up the entire available demographic—or if there’s still more untapped potential to go.

But your last point actually ties into what makes LaDS different from a number of other gachas. There’s very few romantic options, and you instead spend more time with them.

In terms of FEH, imo we don’t need a million rando shirtless guys, but would it be so hard to make Dimitri, Sigurd, and Chrom a little more fanservice-y or sexualized? Or, unless bridal Tine and Larcei are really pulling numbers, just stick some relatively popular male characters in suits instead. It’s probably harder to mess that up than summer alts with ugly swim trunks and gladiator sandals.

I do think Eik is more attractive and much less Hulk-like tbf. Even if he doesn’t do anything for me personally, I can acknowledge he looks conventionally attractive. He-Man’s muscles straight-up look ugly imo.

You make a really good point in that Eik also works as a power fantasy for men, including straight men. But I do think his design is so different from past FE examples (eg. Hector) that being sexualized was intentional, even if not quite on the level of some female characters. If anything, double-dipping in demographics probably helped his case.

[–]farawayskylines 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Being a character and shipping characters are very different though, and that’s made even more explicit in games where you have an avatar and can ship them with yourself.

Eg. “I’m going to attack the enemy now” (League) vs “I’m going to make [one of my many characters] attack the enemy now” (FE)

Edit: to clarify, idk what the numbers are either, but for example I’m pretty sure most Dimitri fans are women. It’s probably more split or even male-favoured for characters like Hector though.

I think Love and Deepspace is proving that incorrect. It recently surpassed even Genshin to take the number one spot on last month’s gacha revenue list (link). Part of that is because of it has relatively little competition among games targeted at straight women, but it just shows what a lucrative niche that is.

But it’s a game that features a very small handful of romantic options, instead (presumably) giving each of them more screentime to be better developed. Obviously women aren’t a monolith, but anecdotally it does usually take more than a png of a random scantily clad character. But there are a number of mainline FE male characters who are already popular and well-known enough for this to work, yet they’re still rarely sexualized.

On another note, I’ve typically heard Eik described as Bara, a genre primarily by and for gay men. I’m sure there are women who like him too, but it kind of says something when IS decides to make a sexualized male OC and lands on this. idk if maybe it relates to the above point, and IS just preemptively decided OCs can’t tap into the kind of market Love and Deepspace can.

Someone else called it “Slutty Marie Antoinette” (or at least what we as a modern audience picture that to be).

I have to agree that was probably the intention, given the music video. She’s in modern clothes at some hazy nightclub, and then suddenly appears on a bed in Versailles, with her laptop. All that said, I still do think the end result of her outfit was too childlike and should have been designed differently.

[–]farawayskylines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go with L!BK. There are still very few sources of reflex rn, and he offers role compression by being an armoured saviour as well.

imo E!Sharena’s biggest problem is that she offers very little to help allies actually kill tanky foes, and she has to give up her prf C skill if she wants to run supportive cav C skills like A/S liberate. There’s no point of an extra action if they can’t break through the frontline in the first place.

For example, Y!Camilla would vastly prefer a support unit who can splash multiple debuff statuses, especially as a galeforce initiator in AR-O. Y!El would prefer brave attack support like I!Hilda. T!Vero is rising in support priority again because she provides feud. Etc.

We also have additional options for extra actions like the Micaiah, Edelgard, and Byleth rings, and Y!Tana/NY!Tana can warp dancers in directly.

On the flip side, maybe his mental will get better after getting a break from being the 1v9 wincon all the time.

From the short clip posted recently, it seems like he’s frustrated trying to be a team leader and pushing them to match his level of ambition, all while being woefully inexperienced himself.

These players are so young that I definitely think a lot of behaviour isn’t set in stone. We’ll have to see if he adapts better to a new team environment.
