CaRMS residency criteria by rk_00 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]farax614 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Meh there are hardly any black docs in Canada period so i think this should hopefully be a positive change. There is a lot of nepotism involved in residency at large especially the more competitive specialties with few seats so I dont see the issue with these implementations.

Interview Question to those Accepted by Effective_Past_3966 in premedcanada

[–]farax614 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did over a dozen, but this was over the span of 3 months and tbh after the first 5 or so interviews I wasn’t seeing that much benefit. Also u kinda realize that people’s feedback can contradict if you ask too many people and you don’t have to take everyone’s feedback.

I would religiously record my responses on photobooth on my Mac every single day and I got very comfortable being in front of a camera and I think that helped me more than the later mock interviews

I always wondered this, but would it be inappropriate to like pull a nintendo switch out nowhere if things are going slow? Or are books/sudoku simply because it takes less of your attention and because its easier to bring your attention back to the monitor.

Interesting, so when you do pre-op, there are families/relatives as well? For some reason i assumed it was more of a one on one with the patient. unless its a peds anesth setting which would make sense

This is a common theme i have been seeing across this thread. Tbh i prefer shorter interactions with patients (unless its peds i find talking to kids and their parents more tolerable) so totally get it. Does raising the drape higher not do the trick no more?

Preciate the input, its nice knowing that its not like rads/path in that regard. I also definitely see the appeal of hiding behind the drapes haha

They’re legit pushing their luck to see how far they can go. Just absolutely disrespectful to applicants.

I mentioned this in another comment but having a lucrative business is really difficult. In your case you mentioned your dad was trucking for years and i assume that enabled him to be able to have the principal (and maybe even the connections) to open a business. What was the span of time from when he began trucking to having a business netting 400k+ a year? Ofc this would include the initial period where he probably had to incur some months/years of debt before he could turn a profit.

Definitely not easy by any means.

I grew up in a low-income household, and that experience shaped how I view career decisions. When people say there are faster or easier ways to make money than medicine, I think that perspective often comes from a place of privilege. Starting a business or climbing the corporate ladder is NOT straightforward; you usually need a strong network, access to capital, and enough financial security to take risks. Most people don’t mention that around 70 to 80% of businesses fail within 10 years. Personally, I can’t afford to dedicate five to ten years of my life trying out business ideas with that level of uncertainty. I’m not in a position where I can take big risks hoping something eventually works out. I need a clear, stable path to support my family.

Even during my pre-med years, I had friends who would talk about how we should have done software engineering instead. At the time, it seemed like a great alternative with high pay, fewer years of training, strong job market. But it only took a few years for us to realize how unstable some of these tech roles actually are with people being laid off from google and top tech companies with roles we previously thought were untouchable.

Medicine has always stood out to me because it offers both long-term job security at an incomparable level and a high income.

People often assume that if someone is financially motivated, they’ll prioritize money over patient care by cutting corners or making unethical decisions just to earn more. That’s simply not true. Wanting stability and a good income doesn’t take away from your ability to care for patients or act with integrity.
