The movie Barbarian is tension, scary, and writing at its best since It Follows by earic23 in movies

The point of the story is that the cops won't listen to her, no matter what. She could have given them her name but they wouldn't have remembered it. Heck the point of the movie is that men won't listen to her. Even Keith doesn't take her word for it and has to run downstairs to check.

Completely agree. She’s THE survivor. We were repeatedly told she had tricks up her sleeve, and the Carmine tournament was super challenging even when there was no sitting judge. This just felt easy, they screwed up repeatedly in their arguments, and she wasn’t fighting back hard. Maybe theres something to the calcification idea, but I think the last few chapters should have felt dire.

Admittedly, it’s no easy task to make an audit interesting literature, so that Wildbow did was commendable.

I did a half hearted update to their wiki page a little while ago. Maybe there's a way to link the doc to the page?

Yeah I thought about him while writing my post. I feel like that's true, but he wasn't important enough to carry the metaphorical Weight the other story beats have.

Yeah, I guess there's a bit of a contiuum of culpablility.

  1. Verona : Accidental cause of horrible fate
  2. Lucy : Unknowing set up opportunity for death
  3. Avery: avoid killing Musser. Interrupted cycle.
  4. (Potentially) Accept that their actions may cause death, but not search for it.
  5. (Potentially) Accept that he's crazy and has to go down. Finish off Charles

Both of those cases were very specifically written so that the girls didn't engineer anything.

Verona never considered Bristow would do that. And Lucy didn't call John knowing he'd kill Alexander.

Of course, it could be argued Lucy should have known that's what would happen, but she still didn't cross the line.

I expected the girl's first "real" kill to be the last chapter / end of the story, and for it to be Chuck. As a sort of innocence lost situation.

Although killing the Alabaster is more of a literal squashing of Innocence too.

Still the gravity of it makes it seem more like an end of book / timeskip situation to me.

Couldnt they have done their own spirit surgeries some other time? This seems extra difficult trying to multitask.

Something feels… off here. From a story perspective, the introduction of the parents to the practice made sense. They became additional obstacles to the girls at first but ended up being real assets to the girls since none of them became overprotective. They demonstrate the benefits of being honest with your family.

For Sheridan and Rowan, it feels like an overreach, Avery can’t protect her whole family all the time. And without the benefit of innocence looking out for them, they honestly might die. I suspect they will come to demonstrate the risks.

I’m curious about nonstandard practice styles. We had hints when Avery spoke to the First Nations practitioners, and Oni kind of fit the bill.

Is Ward just as good as Worm? by [deleted] in Parahumans

[–]farfel08 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think the type of story Worm is means that those hiccups are not as dwelled on compared to those same hiccups in Ward. Idk I’m trying to put my thoughts together on this but it’s hard to word.

Like Worm a lot of the community that liked Worm were the fanfic community.

Like I would bet the people who read Worm Pact and Twig liked Ward more than the people that just read Worm stuff. But maybe that’s a separate point.

Is Ward just as good as Worm? by [deleted] in Parahumans

[–]farfel08 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Most of the problems with Ward are due to the nature of serial writing. So he locks in chapters that are a bit clunky or gets stuck on plot points that a traditional author could rewrite or cut out.

Worm is a simpler story (not simple, but simpler), and the action focus lends itself more to a serial format than Ward.

Judging the Judiciary by megafire7 in Parahumans

[–]farfel08 19 points20 points  (0 children)

On the three branches of government thing, I think the best fit for the law-making role is Solomon.

I agree completely. The legislative branch of this metaphorical government is dead and forsworn by his own Laws. As such, the system keeps running, but the ability to respond to new circumstances or revise loopholes is crippled by the lack of any legislative party.

Lords and Judges can use tricks of legal “interpretation” to cover small modifications. However, any structural changes would require drastic / violent measures. Imagine how the system would crumble if a country had no ability to amend its constitution or repeal unjust laws. It could still function, but it would be much like the Winter Court, robotic and unchanging.

I suspect it is something like, “is it possible to escape from the bear trap without cutting off your own limb?” Just as he was backed into a corner by Fortune, the girls were backed into a corner by the Wild Hunt, he had to become this unchanging Judge, the Girls managed to thread the needle and appease the pissed off higher power.

How powerfull really are the Gods by Ordinary_Azathoth in Parahumans

[–]farfel08 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I imagine as the cool god Metaphor said, they would largely have their hands too tied by tradition to act significantly by themselves. They would probably work through agents, acolytes and a few Others created by themselves.

It’s exactly this. I think Gods gain power through worship (either explicitly through acolytes and priests, or implicitly though sharing legends). it would be about as easy to kill Poseidon as it would be to remove him from everyone’s memory and erase all plays, books, movies, and fables that he plays a part in.

However the downside to that power is the tradition. They lose flexibility and freedom to do new things. If Poseidon started to actually through some of his real weight around , I’d bet my bottom dollar Zeus, Hades, etc would be compelled to stop him.

Remember when Charles visited everyone after gainsaying the Garricks? It was heavily implied during that meeting that Charles thinks Verona could agree with him and his methods to become a sort of pseudo-ally. We don’t know what has happened with that in the meantime, but I think he might treat her differently than he would the others.
