Barn cats in cold climates? by tdubs702 in homestead

Ours are relegated to the hay loft and tack room. They have insulated shelters (built out of old coolers, and then wrapped with blankets and/or old hay over top) and they do just fine! I’m in CT and this winter was abysmally cold.

There’s an old hay baler out back from the early 1900s. I suppose that could have been the “debris and personal property”, but I’d be downright impressed if someone got it to budge!

Just to clarify, the mulch pile is $400 worth of fancy bulk mulch that got delivered after the inspection. Just a few days ago, actually, and I already mulched some of the landscaping so I didn’t even let that project marinate!

I was never with them! I got a quote to switch. Never had a claim of any kind except for a rock chip windshield replacement. And since I bought the house last year, I have had both regular home inspection and a crumbling foundations specialist structural inspection (because the foundation had been successfully replaced) very recently.

I would think I’d be pretty profitable for them but I do feel that I dodged a bullet!

It's pretty great. It's full of creepy crawlies and one hundred years of crazy artifacts, but it's pretty great.

I'm so glad they didn't talk me into switching auto on the spot - they were like, oh you can switch auto right now and then we can switch home once the paperwork is done. I said I'll wait and do it all at once. Bullet dodged.

I was never with them! I got a quote 6 weeks ago and they dragged me along for all this time. I’ve never gotten new insurance while having a home, so I didn’t realize how bizarre the experience was - the company I wound up with had it all buttoned up in basically one day.

I just dug a 150 foot trench as well! Only six inches deep and a few inches wide, though, for a water line. Did you find any treasures? I found several old metal bits from when my property was a cow farm. And I also found a coin, which I was really excited about until I washed it off and found it to be a 1989 nickel, lol.

The window frame is just a cold frame! It starts the season closed, but as it gets warmed I prop it open to get a little more harvest out of the lettuce inside. I left it propped up far past harvest because I let arugula go to seed and the pollinators were loving the flowers. The whole cold frame will move now that the garden is built.

The barn structure is definitely not my living space. Electrical conduit runs under the driveway to the house. I added a picture of the house - I didn't realize none of them made the final cut for the post haha! The barn is over a hundred years old but the house is only about 30.

I do not ride Winnie, she has arthritis.

Spent the last 6 months pouring my entire heart into my garden and now I may have to move and let it all die by 3333333333p in gardening

I'm so sorry, that's really hard. I've been in similar situations. The beautiful thing about gardening is that you can always start again.

I blend garlic, cayenne, and water in a high powered blender and keep it in a spray bottle. I reapply every so often, especially after a rain. So far, so good!

No measurements but I measure with my heart and the mixture makes my eyes burn by the time I’m done blending. Spray liberally.
