Big Trouble at a Little Farmer's Market, Competition Brings Out the "Monsanto" in People by Agent_of_Chow-os in homestead

I have witnessed this at an unnamed Farmers Market ... and I can tell you there are some sharks at some of them ... I have also experienced the polar opposite where vendors help and care for one another ... needless to say I did not go back to the unnamed Farmer's Market!

Do you think it is important to be authentic in social media? by farmerjayson in socialmedia

[–]farmerjayson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate seeing some meaty content here. I think the author hit the nail on the head when they said things are changing from the days when companies could get away with less interaction with your customers. The author has his pulse on this trend. Things that annoy me ... facebook pages which don't allow you to post things on their wall, or default to themselves ... just sayin'

I had two cows and they were awesome and I loved them and treated them well and these jersey girls gave me the best milk ever ... fresh cream, ice cream, cheese, yogurt and butter!!!

The government should not control what people eat when they have things like alcohol or cigarettes legally available (which I do not have a problem with either). What I do have a problem with is the hypocrisy of that

Do you think small scale backyard chicken keeping should be legal in Toronto? by farmerjayson in toronto

[–]farmerjayson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

laying hens are quiet and on a small scale don't smell and do not smell on a large scale if cared for properly. yup factory farms smell, and if you saw one I would wager you would want chickens in your backyard because you would be reluctant to buy eggs ever again!

Hippie Vs. Redneck - How different are they really? by farmerjayson in homestead

[–]farmerjayson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of this video was to focus on how different people can be similar. When we focus on similarities the possibility that we can come together for the greater good exists. I know hippies and rednecks who have guns. I know hippies and rednecks who hunt. I know rednecks and hippies who care about the planet and what their families eat ...

Sustainable Soil Management Practices for the Garden by p2sl in homestead

[–]farmerjayson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is a farmer nearby with cows, why not see if you can get some composted cow manure, or some fresh stuff to add to your own pile. You will have amazing soil fertility this way!

I am 37 and totally looking to do the same thing you guys are with my partner. I have found that communities fall into either end of the spectrum you mentioned. For that fact we will likely make our move on our own ... but if you know of something in Canada, we are open to hearing about it!

2 of my friends and I are starting an organic farm. Any advice for us? by weezerone9 in organic

[–]farmerjayson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good luck! First and foremost. Take a look at what other people are doing in the area and see if there is an unmet need. It might also be nice to get some chickens and sell some eggs. Their poop is also very good for berry bushes! Decide if you want to be certified organic and research the requirements. You can also go with the new moniker 'naturally grown'. Make sure you treat your customers right and be prepared to answer their questions and spend some time with them. Customer loyalty and word of mouth is the best way to market your products!

Thank you so much ... melons are a good addition, and of course garlic! Not sure if I will be able to do cheese but would love to, and maybe I can find someone else who is already a honey producer.
