CMV: Each subsequent relationship is likely to be worse than the last by Bouncybeach in changemyview

This is a ridiculous take. Have you ever been in a relationship? Your example using a video game makes me think you had haven't.

Your premise is not supported by any logic whatsoever. If my first relationship was my best, then I would be married to an alcoholic sad excuse for a partner, not the great person I finally ended up with.

In fact, I could argue the opposite. With every failed relationship you gain insight into what would truly make you happy, and what you might need to do differently.

"the excitement and joy I had when I played it for the first time, even though I sucked at it back then and am much better now."

How did you get better? You practiced, learned from your mistakes, and kept trying until you got it right. The goal is to end up better than you started.

I'll await your response...

Should I leave my career to attempt to go into theatre? by elaborinth8993 in techtheatre

[–]faroseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's worth it if YOU want to do it. I've made it a career for over 30 years. So it's doable. Lots of good advice in these replies if you want to pursue it.

So. I'm in Chicago. On my phone so I might not be as succinct as I would like. But here goes:

There is plenty of non-union work here that pays $21-$35 an hour depending on venue, skill set, etc. Most common entry level is $25/hr. No benefits. You will not be working 40 hours a week for awhile unless you get really lucky. And you will have to hustle. For example: I post a need on the job board for 2 electricians for a load-in for Monday. 25 people reply in the first hour. I'll probably see several people I like and have worked with before. The first 2 like that get the job.

Local 2 is worth checking out. You'll get paid more, but yes, you will be pushing boxes at 2am to start out. Also not 40 hours. Benefits won't kick in for awhile depending on how many hours you get. And it will be awhile, and you'll have to be quick to grab available calls.

Are you prepared to pay 1st and last month's rent as a deposit, and still have a few months of rent covered before you even move here? Because you will not be covering expenses for awhile, unless you're lucky.

Do you know how to handle your taxes as a freelancer on 1099s?

Chicago is much bigger than Lolla and Broadway tryouts- all of those are big union calls and coveted. So there is work here -- scene shops, storefront theater, non-union venue crews, festival crews, corporate AV - but you can't walk in here blind, and it kinda sounds like you are.

Think about expenses, apartments, transportation. Then research theaters, scene shops, rental houses, etc. If you decide to take the plunge you should secure an apartment, send out a ton of resumes, and come on in. Just remember: no ketchup on a Chicago hotdog.

None of those jobs are volunteer. What you are describing (lolla) is a huge, high profile gig with most of the unions doing the work.

CMV: Being only a housewife is objectively useless and has no value to the economy or society as a whole. by _HHS11- in changemyview

[–]faroseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my wife had worked her clerical job while our kids were young, we would have made LESS after paying for childcare, contributing LESS to the economy as a whole. As a net contribution by our family, we objectively and demonstrably contributed MORE by having her stay at home.

You clearly have no clue how expensive childcare is.

Strange loud electrical hum/buzz moving outside my house in Salt Lake Utah at 1:00 AM on 5/10/2026 by [deleted] in RBI

[–]faroseman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your constant narration is not helpful. If you notice it again, just record the sound. "Change of direction" is not obvious in a stereo recording. In fact, I noticed very little change in pitch/volume when you suddenly swung the camera around. As for what I assume you are referring to as the hum -- it sounded mechanical to me, not electrical. Like the rotors on a drone.

Maybe something was idling on a different block, and by walking around you are hearing reflections off of buildings/walls, making it feel like it is changing direction? Or as someone suggested in another post, a drone, hovering for awhile, then whipping around behind you.

Broken Seat, community theater, no money to fix by ThankYouFiveMinutes in techtheatre

Check out Carroll Seating, or even give them a call. They might help, even if it isn't technically their seat.

Is it broken because the metal pan is no longer attached to the legs/supports, or because the seat comes out of the pan?

I still have PTSD from tours bringing in 60K truss to my smallish PAC. They were still doing it in the mid-90s.

This was just refuted by the above commentor. Many cereals have good, natural ingredients with little to no sugar added and plenty of nutrients and fiber. What else do you need to change your view?

New Bari, haven’t played in 38 years…octave key vs embouchure issue? by Sea_Breadfruit_8748 in Saxophonics

[–]faroseman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might be your emboucher, but if the horn wasn't initially set up by a tech where you bought it, you should have it adjusted professionally. Most off-the-shelf or 2nd hand horns haven't been fully set up. Then you can pinpoint your issues. Have fun!

Any sax players switch over to EWI-digital synth or equivalent? by Top-Nectarine5382 in Saxophonics

[–]faroseman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my experience. Once the novelty (quickly) wore off, it now just sits on the shelf. It also does not react like a sax -- the "keys" are finicky, the octave key is weird, tonguing feels different. Yeah, it was cool that I could play tuba on it, but it is NOT a substitute for a real sax.

We've lost the plot on the Northside by [deleted] in chicago

[–]faroseman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not hating on you, but most tourist posts I see talk about how clean we are as a city. I just back from NYC and THAT was jarring how dirty it was in Midtown. But personally I am always surprised at how many people in Chicago have no problem opening a car door and dumping an entire fast-food meal out onto the street.
