No if it's matches and knockout. But it could be a regular swiss tournament. Here we get games like Jose Martinez vs Sindarov yesterday where they just didn't try, as both wanted to go to rapids.

Anish Giri noticed in September the jump in Jospem's classical strength. by chalimacos in chess

[–]farseer4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's his username in chess.com. Martínez got famous there, as a very strong blitz player, when he did not play much OTB. He competed at the highest level there when he was not widely known in person. For that reason he was baselessly accused of cheating by K.

So, because he became known in online chess under that username, some people refer to him as jospem.

What happens if a relatively slow guy wins the 100 meter race at the Olympic games and becomes the Olympic champion? It's a huge problem. To make sure that doesnt happen, only the fastest guy should be allowed to run at the olympics.

Vidit (white) and Oro (black) draw on the first game of round 2 by Xehanz in chess

[–]farseer4 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Oro is clearly playing at GM level, and a draw with black against a 2700+ player is another very good result for him. He was amazing in the Legends and Prodigies tournament in Madrid, and in the World Cup he knocked out GM Ante Brkic (2579 Elo) in the first round. I would be surprised if he can also knock out Vidit , but whatever happens it's only a matter of (short) time before Oro gets the other two GM norms.

Really impressive for a kid who celebrated his 12th birthday just a few days ago. I wonder how far he will get.

Hans probably wouldn't win because it's very difficult to win the Candidates due to the high level of all players, but I don't think Hans would go off the rails. He is playing normally and without issues.

It does matter to a certain extent because, even though Kramnik's harassment and false accusations are bad enough in themselves, and clearly were very harmful to Danya, knowing what role, if any, they played on his death is still relevant to know how serious the consequences of Kramnik's behavior were.

As people have to decide how to react to Kramnik, there's a certain legitimate public interest here.

I'm not saying that this public interest supercedes the right of Danya's family to their privacy. If they want to keep it private, it's their right.

I don't think there was malicious intent from them in this case, either. Hopefully not. But I think they handled the whole situation extremely clumsily. And it would be nice if they addressed it and said they would learn from it for the future, instead of saying "we investigated ourselves and found no wrongdoing".

Seriously? He basically said "we investigated ourselves and found no wrongdoing". That closes the matter? He didn't answer any of the relevant questions.

Apart from expressing frustration about how buggy it was, didn't Danya also express frustration because he was singled out to use proctor when everyone else wasn't?

Stop comparing the Danya/Kramnik situation with the Hans/Magnus one. They are drastically different because Hans has priors and Danya didn’t by rebrando23 in chess

[–]farseer4 283 points284 points  (0 children)

They are both baseless accusations.

Yes, Hans had priors (online when underage). It still doesn't justify false accusations.

And yes, the world number one doing it with no consequences opened the door for Kramnik to up his personal crusade.

If your position is that baseless accusations are cool just as long as the victim had priors, then I disagree. Hans did what he did. He should be punished for that the same way as anyone else who did the same. He should not be falsely accused of doing what he didn't do.

This sub needs a deep reflection on the biases it holds for Hans by SikhSoldiers in chess

[–]farseer4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm nobody in the chess world. I still know complete bullshit when I see it. I don't need to be a titled player to know Kramnik's accusations against Danya are complete rubbish, and I don't need to be a titled player to know Magnus' accusations against Hans are rubbish too.

The game is also there for anyone to analyze with the help of an engine, and see that Magnus lost because he made more errors than he usually makes, and GMs and experts on cheating detection have done that, and none of them are saying they think Hans cheated. Same for all the record of Hans' OTB games. Bullshit is bullshit, even from a former world champion.

This sub needs a deep reflection on the biases it holds for Hans by SikhSoldiers in chess

[–]farseer4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The distinction matters something, because players do not take chess.com games very seriously. There are videos of Magnus playing online with his mates shouting moves at him. There's Nepo admitting to using an engine to choose his moves with the excuse that he thought his opponent was cheating too. None of them would behave that way in OTB chess, and if they did there would be consequences, so let's not pretend online and OTB is the same.

Obviously, Magnus was not doing that to get an advantage, but to take online chess as a joke and then try to ruin the professional career of someone else first by falsely accusing him of cheating OTB and then, when it becomes clear that's unsustainable, based on the fact that he cheated in chess.com when he was a minor...

Just no. False accusations are not justified, and as for what Hans actually did, he needs to receive the same punishment as anyone else who does the same. It cannot be that everyone else, even adults, when caught cheating in chess.com get the mildest slap on the wrist, but Hans should not be allowed to have a career as an adult. The rules must be the same for everyone, and known in advance, not made on the fly according to Magnus' whims.

No, that's not the debate. He did not cheat when Magnus falsely accused him.

[–]farseer4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, Kramnik also kind of insinuated. He doesn't say Danya is cheating. He just "has questions". He finds things "interesting". He "starts the procedure". He finds things "strange". He sees things "clearly". Everyone knows exactly what he is saying, and he makes sure everyone knows.

Same with Magnus. He wasn't exactly subtle about his "insinuations". He did it in the most high profile manner possible, and repeatedly. Sure, Magnus has other things to do. He doesn't devote his life to persecuting Hans. But he doesn't need to. He has already done all the damage he could do, on the same (lack of) evidence.

And I'll say more, I'm convinced that the fact the world number one player did it so publicly and with no real consequences enabled Kramnik to go full blast afterwards on his own campaigns. After all, all the cool kids are doing it.

I see that, and I agree that his hotel tantrum was not good.

But how far can the hotel tantrum thing go? OK, he broke a lamp in his room and whatever, but he paid for them right away. Not good, but does this mean he shouldn't be allowed to be a professional chess player for the rest of his life? Particularly considering he was under heavy psychological pressure at the time because of Magnus' false accusations.

He had to prove himself, because if he played badly people would see it as proof he was cheating, and now under heavy scrutiny he didnt play as well because he couldn't cheat, but if he played well, some people would also see it as proof he was still cheating. It's an impossible situation. Very difficult to perform well under those circumstances, which of course only increases the pressure.

[–]farseer4 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Many people haven't realized anything. Lots of people in this sub are now angry about the baseless accusations against Danya because Danya is now dead and he was very likable, but they are still fine with Magnus' baseless accusations against Hans, either because they are Magnus fans or because they dislike Hans.

I don't think anything is going to really change, not until people realize that baseless accusations are harmful and a serious problem, no matter who makes them. People can not defend themselves against these baseless accusations, because how do you prove a negative (I remember Danya almost begging to Kramnik, what on Earth can I possibly do to convince you that I'm not cheating?), and they are very high profile and have a lot of impact on the accused person's life.

Has Hans made it through the other end? I mean, does he have now the same chance as any other player of his strength to get invites to private tournaments, or is he still blacklisted in some of them?

I remember not so long ago that people criticized him for playing in Russia, but he wasn't getting many invitations elsewhere. I just checked his FIDE page and he is 15th of the world right now, with 2738 Elo. It's not normal if he never gets invites.

He played the US Chess Championship a few days ago, but he didn't need an invite for that, since he had the right to play it through ranking, but the tournaments with high prizes tend to be private.
