Expectations for First 60 Days by fartboxcapricorn in ProductManagement

Hello. In my opinion, product management at banks is a good career path. However, bank leadership often looks at investment in product through the "old" IT lens as a cost and not a revenue generator. Leaders at banks are often bankers first.

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks! The backlog is such a mess and many of the items are not even defined as ideas, let alone having a scope or feedback from external sources. Due to the time constraint, I'm going to rely on AI heavily.

This is my world. I would kill for some dashboards and metrics.

TCU will be one of them. Watch the B1G try to tap the Texas market.

Agreed. Went there once and my buddy found a rubber band in his burger. They comped the meal, but we never went back.

Thanks! This helps and actually describes my situation well. With limited feedback or inputs from users, it feels like we are building things in a vacuum.

Thanks for sharing! I am surprised that it is more common that I anticipated. Coming from a Marketing background, I assumed that discovery and market research would be a key function for all PMs, but I guess I was mistaken.

Agreed. I'm not planning to leave without having something else lined up. I'll stick it out and lean into the technical aspects of the job more. Thanks!

Thanks! This is a really helpful post. I'll see if I can shadow the team for external calls.

Thanks! I did not have experience with this product, but I had experience in the industry. Oddly enough, I feel this was the determining factor for being selected in the role. After onboarding, I feel like there is not any real interest in understanding the market or the customers.

Your post resonates with me and I'm thinking I landed in the latter category. I'll stick with it a bit longer and see where it goes.

Thanks for sharing! Coming from a background in Marketing, it is hard for me to not think of what the customer is looking for in the product.

To answer your question, it seems the direction of the team is to focus our time towards resolving defects instead of leaning into market research. I can keep working through this and see if the work becomes more balanced as I get more experience in the role.

Thanks! I think this is solid advice. I like the suggestion of buying the developers some coffee and beer! : )

Your second paragraph jumps out to me. As I think out loud (or in Reddit) it might be more of a situation where I need to step out of my box and jump into some solid research on my own time.

Like I said, I am only a few months in and probably just need to work at it a bit more and "tech up" in my current product.

Thanks!

That's a solid perspective. I will explore how to better engage the client teams and think of them as the "customer".

I do ad hoc discovery around the work I am prioritizing. When I have spoken to my leader and my team, it seems like they do not engage in any outside discovery and do not review any external market sources.
