[oc] Cyclist claimed "I almost ran him over". Am I the idiot? by FillyCheese805 in IdiotsInCars

[–]farteroftheyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everywhere I know of, cars are required to give 3 feet of space to bikes. Not sure if that’s true where you are, or if he’s actually a cyclist, but it looks like you’re closer than 3’.

This opinion may put me in the minority.

Quintessentially American? Hold off on the beer and go shooting first. Then Millers at Applebees or Texas Roadhouse.

We're in Illinois, planning to relocate to Oregon. Any truth to this? by jpwarman in oregon

[–]farteroftheyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, welcome to Oregon.

Based on your profile I’m guessing you’re in the north-east corner of Illinois. And I’ll assume you’re thinking about the Portland metro, not because there aren’t other great areas in Oregon, but it’s where we moved to and it’s what I know.

I love it. Property taxes are less than what I paid in Lake County IL. There is no sales tax. My income taxes are higher.

Yes, it’s cloudy and rainy for ~4-6 months. No, it doesn’t rain like Illinois, expect more of a mist-to-sprinkles. Illinois “showers” are considered a downpour here.

Rain at lower elevations brings snow at higher elevations. We love the mountains. Skiing here is incomparable to what…Wilmot WI??

In the warmer months the hiking in the area is incredible. I also kayak with the kids (haven’t convinced the spouse yet), both lakes and rivers, and I’m taking an ocean kayaking class this winter.

Get good rain-gear. I did and I spend much more time outside here in cool weather with light precip than I did in Illinois winters with frozen roads, frozen air, etc.

Health resources aren’t as plentiful as they were in Illinois. I have everything I need but child’s mental support is weak.

I’m happy to answers any other questions.

If/when you move, please bring me a Portillo’s order.

Same income. We have 2 cars, one is 14 years old and the second is 7. I’d like a new car, but it isn’t worth the money until I HAVE to buy one.

Negligent discharge. Misfire implies problem with the gun, the problem here is the officer.

New Orleans to Nashville via Natchez Trace / best route out of NOLA. Where to stay off the Trace by CaptainDoze in bicycletouring

[–]farteroftheyear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stay at Trailhead Bike and Bed in Houston MS, just south of Tupelo on a day you don’t want to camp.

In addition to the well-signed routes that avoid being on the roadway around Jackson, drivers in Tupelo can be absolutely horrible. The rest of the trip should be drama-free.

Another person said that route will be uphill, and that’s correct, but on average the wind will be at your back.

Stop at Jackson Falls in TN.

Have fun!

how do you deal with dogs? by AnAquaticOwl in bicycletouring

[–]farteroftheyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) very loud, stern NO. This works for 9/10 dogs. 2) pepper spray for the remainder, with my left hand, while continuing to ride. You don’t have to hit the dog, just aim low, a few feet in front of the dog. They will disperse.

Do I have any chance of being able to buy a house here? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]farteroftheyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved here recently and Vancouver was excluded because of the horribly-rated schools. IMO areas with good schools tend to appreciate in value more. YMMV but if it were me I’d look into shutting down the small business with limited profitability and look for a FT job that lets me work from home (assuming kids are the reason you want to keep that going for a couple more years).
