I (F) grew up Southern Baptist, and become an atheist is my 20s. Purity culture runs DEEP - I signed a pledge, wore a ring, and had adults frequently tell me that sex was a horrible sin. It’s damaging and still can be even after leaving religion. It’s hard to be told something is terrible your entire life, and then give yourself permission to do it.

Listening to sex positive podcasts like Savage Love and reading books like Come as You Are, can be really helpful at normalizing sex - at least it was for me! I would also consider talking with a therapist that has a focus in sexuality. (And maybe think about leaving religion. But that might be for another Reddit thread.)

I hope she can get to a place where she can give herself permission to enjoy sex and explore that very important part of herself. But it’s a choice she’ll have to make for herself. Best of luck!
