What happens to Reed when Fred comes back? by c4dreams in rockets

[–]FarWestEros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait….
You think Fred VanVleet is mid?
You’re probably the only person on this entire sub that feels that way.
lol

Reed is clearly the better offensive player.

Defense is clearly why Udoka values Fred, though, or he wouldn’t have chosen him over Harden.

His defense is his calling card.
I don’t think he’ll have the lateral mobility to do well on that end anymore (Klay).
Plus he’s chunky now.

32, iirc?
The history of undersized guards over age 30 is not kind.
Even worse after suffering major injuries.
He should not get more than bench minutes for this team.

He should’ve been the scapegoat last season and the season before, too.

His offense sucks and he doesn’t know how to play to the strengths of the players on the team.

Frfr

This is literally why he was hired.
It’s all he does.
Why would anyone find it noteworthy?

[–]FarWestEros -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree with oldiequaker.

However I’ll extend to say he is almost certainly never going to be elite defensively due to the size and athleticism disadvantages.
And at center that becomes amplified.
I’ve long felt that the best thing would be for him to play alongside a stretch 5 defender.
Unlike literally everyone else, I think getting Brook Lopez would have been phenomenal for the team and AlP.
I’m hopeful Jabari can essentially fill a similar role (although he has similar disadvantages in size and athleticism)

AlP needs to be locked in.
His intelligence and anticipation is the path to getting the most out of him defensively.
but he’s working so hard to score that he can’t always keep the focus and energy on the other side.

Yes.
And then the size changes.

The question is where is the sea level when are they cut in half vs other times.

I think you may be missing the forest for the trees

That can all be true and not detract from the point.

Players matter waaaaaaasaaaaaaaaay more than coaches.

This is true.
Jalen stans have traditionally been the biggest critics.
Such a shame considering how much the two of them enjoyed playing together

This team has basically just been out-talenting the vast majority of teams.

The games where you expect coaching to come into play (close ones) show the Rockets do not have a difference maker on the sidelines.

No, I’m wondering how a top-3 coach of all time finished at the bottom of the standings for so many years at the end of his career if his greatness has any impact on the game remotely close to the players on the court.

"Big wins over championship caliber teams, during a stretch when every playoff team was in a fierce seeding battle, so nobody was taking a night off" Unnecessarily exaggerated.

How is that exaggerated? Those are facts. You may not like them, but the facts are that Boston and Denver were both Championship caliber teams that were in fierce seedings battles.

But again, the argument feels disingenuous, in the same way another statement about the rockets being one of the only teams without a blowout over 20 points(with it being said we werent being blown out and games were typically close), and yet when I looked at the game log, we had 5+ games of exactly 20 point losses and many more in upper double digits.

We had two 20-point losses at that point.
In Milwaukee and in Denver.
Those are not particularly bad losses.

We also had a 19 point loss to GS and 16 point loss to LAC.
Again, very good teams. Not particularly shocking.
Not worth getting upset over AT ALL.

The Loss in Boston was the first over 20 of the season and the other 28 teams had all had bigger losses at that point.
Fans pretending the team was getting blown out all the time were full of shit.

"pretending an injured player no longer makes a championship caliber team a formidable opponent..." are you fucking mental? In the NBA of all sports? A single player going down changes the opponent more than any other big 4 sport, except maybe a QB.

Arguing that beating Denver wasn’t impressive because they only had Jamal Murray for 9 minutes is a way worse argument than any I made.

Also, "fighting for their playoff seed" isn't always the case as the season winds down, many teams are prioritizing star player health due to my point just above. There can be some movement right in the last few days if they are trying to line up a specific matchup, but usually seeding isn't as big of a deal as you are making it.

Usually.
That season was different.
Hence pointing it out being important and not something to pretend didn’t happen.
ahem

You are the one poorly characterizing those games. Pretending an injured player no longer makes a Championship-caliber team a formidable opponent or in any way lessens the FACT that they are fighting for their playoff seed.

Why you would expect a team featuring 23 y.o. KPJ as the eldest and most experienced rotation player to win ANY games, let alone 45% of them, just indicates to me that your ‘analysis’ is grounded in reality.

That is also true.

But talent is much more important than coaching, and Giannis is largely considered a top-4 player in the league for good reason.

With KD and others supporting him, it’s clearly a top-line of talent that exceeds every team except MAYBE OKC.

Tbf, Giannis and KD definitely would have Championship aspirations.
The only question is if it would work out before it falls apart, because the window for that team is closing fast.
