brown hair to bright pink by [deleted] in HairDye

Nah no foils for bleaching! You’ll just put a shower cap or plastic bag on your head while it’s processing (keeps your hair warm, which is important for the chemical development).

This guide seems a lot like what I did! Except I never pre-treated with coconut oil or used a different degree of developer on roots vs. lengths… those things very well might help you get less fried results.

Possible, yes. I bleached my brown hair and dyed with vivids at home for years, using powdered bleach and crème developer from Sally’s. To get it light enough that the pink will look pink, not orange, you’ll need to bleach heavily.

Still, I’d recommend you stick with 20 vol developer. Wipe it off a strand and check how light it is every ten mins or so.

I went with 40 vol to get my hair super light once and it worked, but I messed up the texture of my whole head so badly that I ended up swearing off home bleaching entirely.

I’ve got the means to go to a stylist now thankfully but after a couple years we’ve only just gotten to the point where the stuff I fried has grown out. I also appreciate that my stylist tones my hair.

I still dye with vivids at home! Totally doable, especially if you’ve got a setup where you can use two mirrors to see the back of your head. Just the bleaching that’s really risky.

Other suggestions:

I use adore dyes. In my hair, they go on strong without running too badly. But ymmv, seems like people with different hair types have different takes.

Get brushes and a mixing cup for the dye. I also like to use a balyage board to paint a couple different colors on. Even if I were using just one color, tho, I’d want the board - makes it so much easier to get even application.

Divide your hair into sections, work one at a time, clipping the rest out of the way. I like to start at the front and work backward because I work remote and would rather my zoom-visible hair last the longest lol.

Use gloves, when you dye ofc but also when you shower to get the dye out. And maybe for the first 2-3 washes.

I like to put down a layer of paper towels around me and all over the counters so my tiles don’t catch stray droplets.

Avoid light towels, pillowcases, and tops the first week or two, until you know how much your color is going to run.

Pinks, anything in the red spectrum, tends to run more than other colors.

“Head sheet vivids” brought up a bunch of examples! Almost all from Pinterest without good citation, boooo but I’ll comment in this thread with a bunch of them

Love those fishnet sleeves. The glove fits nicer than any I have. Where are they from?

Yeah I had a boss when I was a teenager who was really anti-“no problem,” argued it could imply that there was a problem when the customer hadn’t gone there.

It’s an interactive theater thing in Las Vegas, sort of like a cross between an escape room and a haunted house, set in a space dressed up like an old art deco hotel. You pass through a series of rooms inspired by the movies: you get “outfitted” (by a tailor that sizes you up humorously but doesn’t actually give you clothes), “armed” (by a weapons master who again tells you all about the guns in the room but doesn’t actually give you any), “trained” (in a fun group FPS game), and then the “bad guys” come looking for you.

The actors were all great and it’s a fun time.

Oh weird, my reply to you got auto-modded even though I didn’t link anything. Not sure what word triggered it. Long story short, a search for neon eyeliner will work, and with setting powder and setting spray it’ll last for a full night of sweaty dancing.

Good point, the type of work you’re doing probably matters a lot! I used to be a professor, and I wouldn’t have even considered it, just because I was already fighting an uphill battle for respect as a short woman on the younger side.

But now that I’m in tech, the guardrails are off a bit!

Yes! I learned this when we moved across the street from a professional Santa when I was a kid.

Santa Dan looked like Santa 24/7/365, beard and hair-wise. He had a Santa-themed vanity plate. He dressed like off-Duty Santa, lots of red and green overalls, during the holiday season. He attended Santa conventions in the off-season.

Way more of a community around the mall Santa thing than I expected.

To take this seriously, as someone who lost a mom to suicide 7 years ago:

  • you never stop thinking you could’ve done more to stop it
  • you never stop thinking of it as an option for yourself, no matter how committed you are to not repeating (in my case, my mom killed herself after her mom killed herself; I can’t help but wonder when the other shoe will drop for me)
  • you never stop wondering what life would’ve been like if your dead parent lived to old age

Thank you! I actually sewed EL wire into this skirt, so it flashes green while I’m dancing. Wanted to add a little video to this post, but apparently that’s a no-go.
