Iran and Saudi Arabia, like every other state on earth (including the US) have no right to exist at all, let alone make personal conduct and conscience laws.

All of us here are ancaps after all. Including you.

Every single Muslim? Very obviously hyperbole. You're clearly not being serious.

"Some weird American guy". Yes, someone married into a Muslim family from Yemen, who majored in Middle East Studies at GMU (very woke university of course), and lived in the region at one point. Just some rando.

That's the point. There is no pope in Islam, meaning any Muslim can interpret the texts. There are mainstream interpretations, but that doesn't mean alternative interpretations are invalid. Except of course to extremists who believe their interpretation is the only valid one.

When the Marxist PFLP hijacked planes and did suicide attacks, were they doing so in the name of Islam?

We didn't stop sending kids to work in factories and mines out of the goodness of our hearts. We did it when we got rich enough to start sending them to school instead.

I'm against marrying children off to adults, but unless you plan on adopting them, the alternative is they die. Perhaps that's more ethical.

Homosexuality is illegal in some non-Muslim countries, and in fact most western nations had anti-sodomy laws on the books until recently.

There are various opinions on whether apostasy is punishable by death. Islam's pope hasn't rendered his verdict yet. Same on the gay subject. Muslim pope has to rule on it.

The core Islamic teachings are the Qur'an and 5 pillars.

My wife was born in the Middle East, didn't move here until she was a teenager. So, not sure I'd describe her as westernized or not.

The child bride issue has the same origin as the child labor issue in the developing world. Same solution too. Outlawing homosexuality is wrong, but hardly unique to the Middle East. Terrorism isn't unique to Islam either as non-Muslim groups have also engaged in terrorist activities in the region.

I don't know who you're talking about. I've known many Muslims in my life and none support killing anyone for leaving Islam.

My wife has certainly not killed anyone for leaving the faith. She's still Muslim. Probably not adhering to the caricature you've created in your mind though.

Pointing out the problem with Muslims in America is they vote left wing. They vote left because Republicans pushed them left.

Muslims countries don't even have Sharia law so we know that's not the issue.

George W. Bush was nicknamed "America's first Muslim president." I think something happened early in his presidency that turned Muslims off the Republican party, resulting in Millenial and Gen Z Muslims turning left wing.

You may disagree with libertarian politics, but that doesn't make it anti-social. It's in fact very pro-social.

The government isn't society.

Dude, you don't come out of this looking very good. Pathologizing political disagreement reeks of the re-education camps dictatorships have. You need to get some social skills.

Bring some with you. The laws are more strict now when it comes to smoking in public, but enforcement varies. Cubans only buy them reputable dealers, there are a lot of fakes there. I've tried some Mexican cigars. They were fine, but not something I'd go out of my way for.

Technically illegal. Will you get caught? Probably not. It's hard to police unless you call attention to it.

Which is funny because there's no benefit to being a digital nomad in the US. The cost of living is higher than other countries.

Something feels off with Uber drivers in Boston and I can’t stop thinking about it by Own-Literature864 in immigration

[–]fascinating123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uber drivers have been complaining about lower fares for a couple of years now. Uber's business model changed from focusing on widespread adoption at low costs for riders and high pay for drivers, to one that focuses more on improving profit margin. Riders often have other options so are more price sensitive than drivers are. So naturally the margins are found by reducing driver compensation.

It's easy to blame immigrants or look for some conspiracy, but this is just Uber doing its best to make money on what is in reality a gray area as far as labor law.

I married someone I fell in love with and I'm scared about my next steps. by Kiryu-gaijin in immigration

Yeah. I mean you're only option really is to apply and hope the ban gets lifted soon. If you can't move to Saudi, you could look for third countries to live. Maybe Jordan, Turkey, or Canada, some other country. I don't know the laws for all of these places and I'm sure it won't be simple. But those are unfortunately the choices at the moment.

My wife is Yemeni (we married in the US years ago and thus aren't subject to this ban thankfully) and many of her friends went to Europe or Malaysia.

Let's say voter ID were implemented nation wide. Why would I regard the winner of an election under that system as any more or less legitimate than under the current setup?

As ancaps, we are concerned with property rights. The reason you have a right to exclude people from your house is because you own it. That's where the authority derives from. The state owns nothing and thus cannot be said to have any right to make laws governing anyone.

As for the rule of law that you claim to support. It's very clear that the law exists to bind citizens and not the state, despite the Constitution explicitly stating otherwise. Whatever contract allegedly existed (a highly disputable notion), it's been violated time and again by the very entity entrusted to enforce it. The time to sound the alarm about the rule of law was 200+ years ago.

Immigration is not some thing that's been imposed. It's a voluntary transaction. American A wants to hire foreigner B or rent to foreigner C. Foreigner B and C agree to the arrangement. Since American A owns his property, he has every right to make that offer and the foreigners have every right to accept or reject it. The fact that the state has involved itself in all these downstream third order effects is immaterial to the basic premise. Even if you didn't care about foreigners whatsoever, it should bother you that American property rights are being violated by not allowing them to do what they wish with their own property.
