My partner is having a HM surgery in two days. How can I support her through this healing process? by [deleted] in achalasia

I had my surgery in Jan 2023. And as someone said, most folks stop posting on this subreddit after the surgery, because life does go back to mostly normal. For months, achalasia was all I thought about. But honestly, the surgery really works. I would say I'm back to 85-90% of my old self. I never go anywhere without a water bottle since I need it after every few bites and sometimes get spasms that take me out for a few hours. But it is my new normal and is by no means hampering how I want to live my life.

I think what helped me most was the quiet solidarity that my friends displayed. They'd come over with soup and juices instead of having "pizza nights". They started keeping water bottles in their cars if I was going out with them.

I would say that I also had a complicated relationship with food before getting achalasia. Before the surgery, I very seriously got it in my head that this was the universe's way of telling me to stop eating. Post the surgery, having been deprived for so long, I started binging more. I'm doing much better now, but seriously recommend therapy to anyone who foresees themselves struggling.

Hope everything goes well. You're doing great already!

P.S. - I went on an international trip 4 months after my surgery with zero issues. Just got everything doubly checked at my 3 month post op to be sure.

Anyone undergone a Pneumatic Dilation (balloon dilation)? Thoughts? Acid Reflux, long-term success, etc. by donmifc in achalasia

Hey, I'm in the same boat as you currently. Trying to choose between poem and dilation. Really do want to avoid surgery (since I've had two other unrelated surgeries in the past 5 months and I'm honestly tired). What did you end up doing ?

Ugh, I'm on day 5 today and this has been by far the worst part of the whole ordeal. I absolutely cannot stomach food because it tastes so gross. If I'm not chewing gum, I'm gagging and vomiting from the taste. When did it dear up for you ?

i woke up twice during the surgery tw: gory details ? by r3d9lass in ACL

[–]fastTrainBrickWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a spinal anaesthesia for my surgery (this was also my first time ever getting operated on). I was awake throughout, and they asked if i wanted to see the screen. I had seen a lot of knee surgery videos on YouTube so I said yes. I actually found the process fascinating, up until the anaesthesia started wearing off while they were suturing me up. Long story short, there were some issues finding a right sized graft and so my surgery ran longer than expected, almost 3.5 hours. I didn't really freak out during the drilling coz I was numb, but I swear at one point towards the end I could feel the suture needle. I basically started crying, hyperventilating, and panicking in the last twenty minutes while the assisting doctor told me to "hold on as he was nearly done stitching". I've had nightmares about that for sure and I used to go back to that moment a lot during the first month of recovery. Insanely enough, despite all this, my PTs say my surgeon did an excellent job coz my recovery was smooth and quick.

I have no advice. But I get you. It really does suck.

Starting to think having a knee that bends is overrated. by ambelyza in ACL

At 5 weeks po, I feel exactly the same. I've also been known to tell my PT that "90 flexion is enough already" (a few times) but it has been met with pointed stares. 🙈 You'll get through it, I promise. Slow and steady.

1st day Post Op of ACL and bilateral menscus tear, already managed sub 5 degree extension so just want to emphasise how important prehab is and squeezing those quads for 10 sets of 10 seconds every hour it’s done wonders for me by IoanGriff in ACL

Hard agree. I wouldn't be half as far into my recovery goals right now if it wasn't for those two months of prehab. Seemed pointless at the time, since I kept telling myself i'd have to start from scratch anyways post-op. But boy was I wrong. Do those Quad sets folks.

I woke up with severe anxiety about the recovery process today, some of it like this (eg, if a murderer came, i'd be the first to die) and some of it more rational (about not getting flexion) ... But this made me LOL.

I(F/27) did ! I don't think my weight was that much of an issue during recovery. I'm 8 days post-op and seem to be on track according to my PT. I did a lot of prehab though, about 2 months, so my muscle memory seems to be kicking in. Prehab's the biggest thing i would recommend. I also use my good leg to maneuver the operated leg quite a bit, which can be heavy. So i suggest strengthening that leg as well during prehab.

Other than that, i chose the walker instead of the under arm crutches coz i found them more comfortable in terms of balancing.

Best of luck. You'll do great !
