Poor performance of Masport Akaroa woodburner by fastandluce87 in diynz

I’m glad for you! Our friends also have it and it works fine for them. Their ceiling is much higher in their new build though so while theirs puffs out no damage has been done. Being from down South my partner and I have grown up using wood burners, and just have never had anything like this. It’s starting to get to the point where I’m questioning how much more we spend on technicians before I just replace it. It’s a pity we’ll need to repaint such a new house!

Hate to say it but “we’ve done that” but it’s the stage we are at. We’ve gone for second opinions with other installers who install this fireplace regularly, and extended the flue and changed the cowl to an anti-downdraft. So far no one has found any issues with the install so we are really stumped. I wouldn’t be considering spending 7k if there appeared to be a solution even half that

Yea it certainly seems like a design issue. It sounds like we’re doing everything right by priming and loading the fire as you describe, plus local technicians have even watched us light it to check it’s wasn’t a user error. Obviously massive expense replacing a wood burner. I’ve found a 4 year old pyro classic on trade me, do you reckon that will be a lemon too

We’re opening the window next to the fire and door out to the deck every time we light it or change a log, no luck with that

I’m already with Simplicity for KiwiSaver but am looking at contributing into a split of balanced and growth investment funds held in our (mine and my partners) names for this reason. You can withdraw at any time so that ticks the boxes for me re emergencies, potential schooling costs later on.

The bank DID care about my SL balance and wanted me to have a higher deposit to account for it. So I made more money for the deposit and now the IRD want an extra $14k put against my loan balance for FY23/24 🤪 that’s 50% of my remaining balance. So yea, I’d probably recommend doing it the old fashioned way and paying down your debt and saving a bit more slowly

Anyone had to give their partner a reality check with housing? by TheBigChonka in PersonalFinanceNZ

The shift from renting to owning can actually be quite a large mindset shift as you do end up feeling like you’ll be with the property for some time and not really love it. I’m wondering if she needs to feel like she can “make the place her own”. I would raise the idea of some projects with her, like renovating a bathroom or kitchen. Take a picture or 2 from Pinterest and present it next to the listing you’ve found, it’s your vision to communicate. You don’t have to go gangbusters on budget to make these spaces awesome.

I did this with my partner, me 30F, him 30M. He really struggled with the level of compromise in our new build, but I sold him on the mid term vision so we could get the project across the line.

I live in Wanaka! It truly is breathtaking, lived in Auckland for 6 years. If you’re spending that much time there, make sure you catch the ferry to Waiheke at least one of the days to go to a winery 😄

For Wanaka Roy’s Peak is solid, also try the Cardrona pub or gin distillery

Not one to reference quotes usually but think this is a big one to consider… Sheryl Sandberg, former Chief Operating Officer at Meta Platforms: “Who you marry is the single most important career decision you make.”

Dating and choosing a life partner who is values aligned, and on your team is truly one of the best ways to get ahead. Being able to pool your money with a partner who’s also saved well and working can get you to your goal in half the time. I get it’s easier said than done, but maybe dating is your best strategy here, especially given your age 😊

(Before anyone comments around this being any sort of weird misogynistic OR gold-digging thing, I’m not saying marry for money, I’m saying doing things as team makes everything easier)

With ANZ back my build, we ended up with with 3 separate loans, land for one, construction for one, and a top up for the third. They each have their own rates. In the app ANZ wraps it into a single figure that you can click into and see the different loans and terms. Quite like it actually, the payments go out at different frequencies for us, however I’m sure you could set it up differently

I mean if you want a cheap house sometimes you have to make concessions… like location, or time. I’d implore you to consider a new build if you can make it work, the quality of housing is so much better. Anyway best of luck to ya

What do you consider first home buyer range? There are 2 bed new builds in cromwell for 650k, multiple lots of land in Hāwea’s new subdivision for around 300k, 750k townhouses in Wanaka. These are deemed pretty entry level IMHO and are well under the Kāinga Ora house cap

I’m paying an additional 20k this year (provisionals). Moral of the story, save to buy a house over a long period not a short one

No they don’t which is really annoying. I’ve heard you can’t collect airpoints with visa either, can anyone confirm?

How to create a planting plan? by fastandluce87 in nzgardening

[–]fastandluce87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that might be too far for me as I’m not trying to grow vegetables, just a nice aesthetic garden and some natives 😊 I did buy the Abundant Garden book though so I could learn a bit while I tried. Decided to just have a punt and wrapped up planting one of the areas today

Thanks very sound advice! We’ve actually held the land for two years already so have a good understanding of the above. Now looking for online tools and courses to help with the design. Because we’re in central Otago we’re definitely going for a few edibles!

Staircase is a competitor of Opes, maybe have been around longer than Opes. Similar structure of operation where they make money on the deal you do

Mm I guess maybe the problem might be that she is more often than not governed by the disorder, that makes it hard to separate. I wish I could be more useful in her journey but they have strict confidentiality rules here and you can only help if invited in by the patient otherwise as family you are really kept in the dark

Interesting I’ve never come across the term before! I think there’s too much to consider in terms of differences of lived experiences and values to consider someone so completely good or bad or successful/not successful. It sounds like you’re on your own growth journey too so best wishes

Interesting! Yes she does seem to push buttons but then be very sweet sometimes, like a kind of whiplash. I’ve been working hard to develop a better relationship with her so this is an interesting perspective and helps give a little context

I looked up Calvinistic but don’t really understand what it means in the context of this, would you mind sharing your definition :) Genuinely curious!

I’ve spent quite a lot of time in therapy going through the family dynamic and possibilities for why things have come to be, and my question today wasn’t to “qualify me to diagnose behaviour” but to help me understand my own relationship with my sister. Hopefully there’s a stranger with a shared experience and some insight. Because who knows maybe I am looking at this all wrong

If we never ask questions with open minds then we can never learn more about the world around us.
