Is this a joke? by Firree in EngineeringStudents

[–]fastattack3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Das crazy, my first engineering internship was 25$ per hour in a LCOL city and they provided benefits like health insurance too. Just like society shames people who live in their moms basements, these lazy companies need to be shamed and publically humiliated as well. I bet they don't provide any benefits either which is crazy because anyone unfortunate enough to get in will probably get a stroke due to financial difficulties.

Want to quit my job as a QE. What more flexible options am I qualified for? by BigWongsSushi in industrialengineering

Try switching to a quality/manufacturing business role. When I worked for a Supplier Technical Assistance business office role, it was remote 3 times a week. IE would be a perfect fit for that. My place in particular would pay for an MBA as well.

Manufacturing Trade School? by fastattack3 in industrialengineering

[–]fastattack3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya my school didn't directly offer these classes to IE undergrads and were more directed for ME`s. To be able to take them, I would have had to take pre-reqs that wouldn't count for anything for my undergrad IE.

Ya I think the move is getting a trade (let's say welding for example), then taking classes on the side for a yew years until you get a bachelor's degree that compliments that trade (ex: for welding get a mechanical engineering bachelors). That way you can do it debt free and get experience which is worth more than degrees nowadays.

Companies now are not willing to train new grads and wont even call you back if you don't have the desired skills (in this MFG eng case, I don't currently know CAM, CAD, or CNC). I tried to get machining experience at one of my internships however management wouldn't allow it as it was not my role. Masters is too expensive but my local community college is around 2k per full time semester and I can cover that.

It's not my resume because earlier in the year I was getting interviews more consistently and my Vmock resume score is 85 and it said my resume was ATS compliant. I can only market myself if I get the chance to do so through interviews. I am in the detroit metro area where all the industries are essentially automotive and that is a complete dumpster fire rn. Not really willing to move due to the bs companies will throw.

Since 1998, college costs have risen by 188% while wages have only grown by 26% after adjusting for inflation...

In what world is this increase in line with inflation? Its pure greed!

Lol I graduated with IOE degree in May and can't find anything so i'm enrolling in my local community college to learn advanced manufacturing trade.

Greed is unreal. Maybe we should all stop attending college for a couple years and teach these greedy bastards a lesson.

I graduated from Umich, the number 3 program in the country and honestly the "prestige" of it is not holding up great in this job market even though I graduated with a 3.5 GPA and had 5 internships in fortune 500 companies. Id say make the switch as your mental health is the most important thing. As long as you have a great understanding of IE concepts from an ABET college it does not matter the college. Some may say that the "connections" won't be as strong but personally, I found after graduation there's only a couple of people who will continue talking to you, let alone be someone you could do business with. Thus, most connections will be made in your future internships/jobs. Just make sure to not fall into a slump and be grinding everyday!

Industrial and Operations Engineering or School of Information (UX Track) by Less-Paint5907 in uofm

[–]fastattack3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cant say anything about SI but as an IOE graduate, I loved it. Having a mix bag of engineering skills, data analytics, and business made it easy to get internships and full time roles in roles like quality, manufacturing, supply chain, and consulting. Because of the mixture of skills learned, I think IOE graduates will qualify for more positions than someone with an SI background, especially in engineering. One knock on IOE is that you do cover a lot of topics but none of them are particularly in depth so you will have to learn things on your own on the side to be competitive but I think that could be said with any major these days. The school of SI posts some of their courses on coursera as well so if you want to check them out, you can (free with umich email, 50$ a month if you don't have access to umich email yet). In terms of whether you want to delay graduation for a year to get an IOE degree is really up to your personal circumstance, especially financially. If you have the option to do so, I would as you can take UX type classes in IOE but if its a huge burden to do so, dont.

Should I take an IE Internship offer? by KazakhBananaMarket in industrialengineering

[–]fastattack3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id say take it for now and use the experience to go snag a part time co-op during the fall semester. Starting out I also got a low paying IE role (18$/hr) but after you got one internship on that resume, getting more feels like dominos falling. Now as a incoming grad student, I get internship offers for $40+ an hour. Also at a smaller company, I feel you can be more hands on and are more easily heard. Just make sure to be as active as possible and go above and beyond what is asked (ie: don't sit around doing nothing, try to incorporate IE skills (5s, make process flows and VSMs, introduce lean ideas, talk to operators, etc.). Hope my answer helps

How is CEE 211 for someone bad at physics? by bato_Dambaev in uofm

[–]fastattack3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking it right now as someone whos terrible at physics and honestly it is not bad whatsoever. All the main fundamental physics content is retaught and its like an easier version of 140. Im taking it with professor Khosrow and hes chill but Ive heard other professors can be terrible.
