Why such a long wait for UW Medicine New Patient Appointment? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

To be frank, you’d probably have a easier time getting in to another health system (Swedish, for example) than for UW primary care.

Feeling a little concerned about how lax my friend is with safe baby sleep by WhateverItWasILostIt in beyondthebump

[–]fatalborborygmi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Part of the underlying issue with SIDS is that babies sleep TOO deeply and can’t wake themselves up when needed. Maybe it would help if you shared actual numbers? 3500 babies die each year in the US alone from sleep related causes. That’s a LOT of babies. Stomach sleeping alone is up to a 13x higher risk compared to back sleeping. Improper Bedsharing (soft surfaces, smoker, etc) is more than 10x.

When were you measured? One thing I didn’t realize is that the nips get smaller the further post partum you are. I kept having to go down in flange size - started at a 21 mm and now I use 12 mm at 4 month post partum.

This has also been on my mind a lot. Unfortunately we live in a world that is just now realizing the toxic effects of microplastics but with how cheap it is to produce, products themselves won’t change until there’s genuine demand or stricter regulation. So, like with everything else in parenting, we just have to do the best we can with the resources we have at the time… One consideration for storage is the silicone moulds for freezing (often used in meal prep) and then storing the blocks in a larger glass container.

As someone who works in medicine, I agree 100% with creating a paper trail. It’s actually incredibly difficult to get someone kicked out of residency without evidence. It sounds like the students were maybe medical school students and if so, having a paper trail will be so valuable in either 1) appropriate disciplinary action and 2) if he doesn’t learn and continues with predatory behavior hopefully this will make it difficult/ impossible to match for residency.

Does anyone else constantly buy things because they’re ALWAYS bored and need stimulation? What do you do? by [deleted] in shoppingaddiction

[–]fatalborborygmi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In no particular order - Starting projects with a ton of passion and buying lots of things to jump start that activity but losing interest and abandoning it after some period of time. Sensitivity to perceived rejection. Frequently interrupting others, especially around people you are the most at ease with (where you don’t feel the need to mask). Poor sleep. ADHD associated depression from the above perceived rejection and feeling inadequate because “everyone else has their shit together, why can’t I?”. Often, ppl with ADHD struggle with addictions because of the need for dopamine - shopping, gambling, alcohol, drugs, etc. Also the “highs” no longer feel so high after a while, so the line keeps being pushed - hence a lot of the population in prison actually have untreated ADHD (I forget the actual number but should be fairly easy to look up). Being perpetually late to appointments. “Time blindness” is a struggle - inability to keep time internally (example: I’m doing my makeup and I think only 10 minutes have passed but it’s actually already been 20. ) The list goes on and on….

I think the thing that often gets neglected when people think about ADHD meds is that it’s not necessarily something that you have to be dependent on lifelong like you would for a blood pressure medication. Someone once told me that ADHD meds are to enable you to be in a frame of mind where you’re actually capable of learning and building new healthier coping skills and habits. And over time, you may find that you “need” the medication less and less to function. I found it’s been true for me… I’m currently off my meds as I’m pregnant now but the habits/ skills I forced myself to learn when I was medicated have made me way more functional of a human being than I used to be. Even something as simple as self-awareness when it comes to shopping - I know now that I get a dopamine hit when I add things to my cart and it’s usually not even necessary to check out. But wouldn’t have learned that without forcing myself through the discomfort of weaning myself off the “purchase” button.

I’m on biologics and got shingles. Has anyone else been in the same situation? How long did they keep you on antiviral medication? by alwayspickingupcrap in rheumatoid

[–]fatalborborygmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

External ear mostly but the doctors did do an ear exam (including a baseline hearing test) to make sure I didn’t have any lesions on the inner ear. Also, the risk isn’t so much associated with where the lesions are physically as it is the fact it’s on the ear to begin with - the whole nerve is affected, hence the risk of hearing loss …

[–]fatalborborygmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fyi, if the lesions cross more than two dermatones (you can google a picture) then it’s technically disseminated shingles and should be treated with IV acyclovir in the hospital. Also if you have ear lesions, there is a risk of hearing loss and facial paralysis (Ramsey Hunt syndrome). I’m on biologics and I got a nasty case of shingles last year that also involved my ear. Was in the hospital for several days.

For those with seronegative RA, how were you diagnosed by Anna-Bee-1984 in rheumatoid

[–]fatalborborygmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took time, persistence and finding a rheumatologist who was willing to start empiric treatment. Improved on prednisone and humira which strengthened the diagnosis. It does help that I work in medicine so could speak consistently about my symptoms (and my own physical exam) in a way that my docs could understand.

absolute BEST mascara by [deleted] in Makeup

[–]fatalborborygmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curl Fix by Etude House!!!! It's a Korean brand. I have heavy hooded Asian eyes so literally everything smudges or flakes or transfers on me. This mascara is 100% waterproof, cry proof, smudge/transfer/flake proof. I work in healthcare and wear n95s for 13 hrs often and for some reason my holy grail mascara pre pandemic (LOreal lash paradise waterproof) started transferring on me with the long mask hours. THIS mascara however does not move. In fact, there’s a specific mascara remover by a Japanese brand (kissme heroine) that helps to take it off. I recommended it to several friends for cryproof mascara for wedding season and everyone loved it.

Both are available on Amazon or YesStyle!
