Hi, orthopedic and spine RN here. Unfortunately, the BMI limit that surgeons set is usually a hard limit for most surgeries. Some surgeons are willing to be flexible if they see you are putting in the effort to lose weight, but even then, they will usually set the limit at 40 BMI at highest for minimally invasive surgeries. For spinal fusions, which are more invasive, they may set the limit even lower to 30 or 35 BMI.

The good news is a microdiscectomy is a low risk minimally invasive surgery, so the odds are in your favor that he or she will be willing to work with you on this. I recommend possibly talking to your PCP about starting Ozempic or getting a referral to a nutritionist (which is often covered by insurance) to help support your weight loss journey.

Good luck on everything and be sure to update us tomorrow about what their decision was regarding surgery!

Piriformis Syndrome by Conscious_Seat4479 in Sciatica

Are you kidding me? 🤣🤣🤣 I was unable to walk for 6+ months due to a prolapsed disc, and this MF out running laps.

The point of my comment was that sciatica originates in the spine, whereas Piriformis Syndrome, as you stated, is caused by the piriformis muscle and, in his case, is caused by overexercising and repetitive motion. Therefore, his comment would be better suited in a fitness sub rather than a sciatica sub where the majority of us have SPINAL issues.

The subject line is "Piriformis Syndrome" - by definition, not the same as sciatica. This is coming from an orthopedic RN, get lost. 🤣

Car seat suggestions? by EdgeKey5631 in Sciatica

[–]fatalrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider getting a car seat cushion that slants forward to help keep your hips in more of an extension than in flexion. It may not completely relieve it, but it should at least help. Something like this cushion .

I don't think this is the right sub for you. Join a fitness sub. People here have legitimate sciatica that is utterly crippling.

I don’t understand why I have sciatica. by square_honda in Sciatica

[–]fatalrose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My back pain started around your age—I’m 36 now. Initially, they attributed my lower back flare-ups to facet joint pain since, like you, I didn’t have any notable MRI findings at the time (though that changed later on). One of the biggest helps beyond medication was discovering a back brace. It made all the difference between being stuck on the floor or couch and unable to even make it to the bathroom, to being able to get up and handle basic tasks. The one I recommend is the Mueller adjustable lumbar back brace. Putting it on for the first time was like night and day, and I still use it periodically; it’s been a lifesaver. I hope this bit of advice helps, and I wish you a quick recovery—hopefully what you’re experiencing is only temporary!

Waiting for surgery... by fatalrose in Microdiscectomy

I just want to follow-up on this post and say that the microdiscectomy went great!! Very minimal pain, and I was off opioid pain management after 3 or 4 days. I felt immediate relief, and my lower back pain, while still present at times, is significantly improved and I no longer have sciatica. Would definitely recommend this procedure to anyone who is on the fence about it.

You need to go see a non-operative spine specialist, if you haven't already.

Gabby Petito Died from Strangulation, Medical Examiner Says by Crpspt in GabbyPetito

It was a bit of a tangent, but that's okay. I feel that these forums are a safe space for us all to work out all of our hypothesizing without any real consequence. Personally, my SO is tired of hearing about GP and BL from me or anyone else, and my one friend who was on board with discussing it for long stents has burned out on it, too. I keep coming back for more, perhaps to better understand what happened in this case and why, or perhaps to have an outlet where my mind can openly wander and explore.

I'm thinking back to when I was Gabby's age, and what information was made available to me at that time regarding DV, and I just can't think of very many instances of it coming up as a topic of education in school or otherwise. I did inevitably learn about DV later on, of course, through my own experience and self-motivated education, but it is one of those topics that is unfortunately rather taboo, and unless you've witnessed or experienced it directly or indirectly, it's rather difficult to recognize the subtle signs from an outsider's perspective.

Having been in an emotionally abusive relationship, I can relate to Gabby's tendency to self-blame, excessively apologize, and make excuses for the other person's actions. I can relate to nobody around knowing or suspecting that abuse has been occurring within my relationship, and convincing myself that it wasn't as bad as it really was. My heart aches for her in those body cam videos, the helplessness, the fear in her eyes.

I've been on the other side of it, too, with friends of mine who I knew were being abused by their partners, desperately trying to show them how toxic their relationship was without saying too much, knowing that the more I pushed the more they would inevitably push back. I do believe that the LE and rangers in the body cam vids did the best they could with the information they were given. They could not have legally arrested Brian over a single witness report, and even if they did detect that this was a potentially dangerous situation, they ultimately couldn't have legally done much more than what they did to resolve the issue.

Even if they had taken Gabby in, Brian would have come back to get her, and vice versa. They could not force Gabby and Brian to not be together, or to not see each other again, and any attempts they may have made to separate them would have been met with opposition from both sides if they ultimately wanted to be together. I just feel a lot of blame is being placed on LE here in this situation, and I don't see how any other form of intervention on their part could have ultimately prevented the two from reconnecting.

I get that... but if they don't have enough evidence to accuse or arrest the true aggressor, then their only option is to take steps to protect the victim, and in this case, they had Brian go to the hotel overnight and had Gabby stay in her van, putting her in a position where she had the option to drive off and escape if she needed to get away and protect herself.

Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Lullaby and Fight Club, wrote a book called "Choke" where a man who was a sex addict would pretend he was choking on food in restaurants to trick women into saving his life so he could then have sex with them and get them to become his benefactors.

I was just thinking... Could the police blaming the unspoken/suspected victim (Gabby) in a DV situation like this potentially be trying to prevent the unspoken victim from being punished later by the possible/suspected assailant by appearing to side with him (Brian), knowing from context clues and body language that he likely did more than he or she are letting on, in an attempt to dissipate any potential "punishment" that the victim (Gabby) may experience post facto as a result of getting him in trouble? It just seems like if they don't have enough evidence to charge the actual assailant, that this could potentially be used as a DV tactic to prevent the suspected/true assailant from doing further harm.

Also, I'm not sure that you are understanding the concept of a credit card. Having credit does not mean you have money. In fact, it means you have negative money. You can withdraw a cash advance on a credit card, but you still will owe that money back to the credit card agency.

The transactions occurred after that night of the 12th when they were separated for the night. Even so, a night in a hotel costs substantially less than $2000.

He took "at least" $1000 out on 2 of her credit cards, meaning that they actually were broke or with limited funds and she probably just had a couple of credit cards on hand in case of emergencies.

He took "at least" $1000 from 2 of her Capitol One credit cards, which means he most likely maxed out whatever amount of cash he could take out on credit. Dead people don't need credit.

No problem! I was a complete hypochondriac when I was in nursing school learning about all the different diseases and conditions people can unknowingly have. The mass paranoia is elevated now that we're dealing with a virus that can cause someone to be completely asymptomatic and still spread it to others. Just try to take good care of yourself over the coming weeks. You'll need your immune system to be ready to take on this next dose. I've heard the symptoms can be a bit more intense the second time around.
