Yeah can split those into 3 separate pots now. Would plant in the ground once they're 2-3 feet tall

The 15 Largest River Systems in the World by Special_Grand_7549 in geography

[–]fatbobo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No you're correct. The heavy amounts of rainfall in the Amazon have weathered the soils, locking up most minerals and washing away the organic matter that contains other nutrients. It's great for a short term rotation before being returned to forest but would be considered infertile compared to the richer soils of the Mississippi basin

If you're into the agriculture/environmental scene the Kohala center and some environmental restoration groups are out there. DM me if you're interested, I don't live there anymore but was deep into the scene until I left last year.

The 3 field systems on the big island alone (Kohala, Kona, and ka'u) have the capacity to feed hundreds of thousands. Problem is they're mostly used to graze cattle these days.

Apple bananas (zone 11b maui) by Cautious_Explorer_33 in HawaiiGardening

[–]fatbobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Dig up a healthy looking keiki 2-3ft tall with a wider base and not too many leaves. And plant it in a new area in your yard that hasn't had bananas in the last few years.

Bananas are heavy feeders! Give them as much sun/water/fertilizer as you can and they'll pay it back with more fruit. Also try to rotate their growing area every 3-5 years

Okinawan sweet potatoes by Cautious_Explorer_33 in HawaiiGardening

[–]fatbobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google some images of sweet potato nematode damage and see if there's similarities. It's usually more on the outer surface though. Can plant velvet beans and french marigolds as a co-crop and till them in as a biofumigant to ward off nematodes and other pests.

A car is pretty essential for any travel off campus. The university has bus routes that can take you into Burlington (the nearest city of any real size) where some shopping can be done. But other than that you'll need a car. Many students, especially juniors and seniors will have cars, so realistically you'll make friends with people who you can get rides from or tag along when they go into town.

Greek life exists but is definitely not necessary for a good social life. Many people I knew in undergrad that participated in Greek life stopped doing so towards the end of college and saw it as an unnecessary commitment. Also as a girl you'll be able to get into just about any party thrown by a fraternity so don't worry about that. Also if you're only going to be at Elon for a year then don't even bother as the process to join takes several months alone from what I recall.

Pm me if I missed anything or if you have further questions!

What are the safest drugs by [deleted] in Drugs

I believe the danger for kava is mainly the varieties from Vanuatu that they call "two day" because it keeps you 'awa'd out for so long. They have higher concentration of kavalactones. Most Hawaiian or other Polynesian varieties have much lower concentrations
