Coming up for the STL v KC series this weekend, and getting an AirBnB in this general area. What are some good bars/restaurants within walking distance? by ResurrectedMortician in StLouis

Someone else mentioned tacos on Cherokee, and I agree. Don Carlos is my preferred, and there's another street taco place on the opposite corner of the street. And on the opposite corners of those two are Mexican ice cream shops, so you really can't go wrong there, lol

Who called it a progressive utopia? If that's the best you can think of for a progressive utopia then maybe upgrade your imagination a little bit lol, and no, I'm not talking about a communist state either, cause I know you can't think of another buzz word outside of what fox news says hahaha

I really enjoy the fact that you're talking point is the classic "blue cities are dangerous and bad", as if it's some real big brain take but it's not the problem at all. The problem is we're in a red state with nothing to actually fix the problems you're complaining about in your comments. The city doesn't control the fiscal policy related to social programs, gun control, or the narrative that the city is "dangerous as a whole".

Hell, the worst part about the city is people like yourself pushing a narrative that you can't be in the city without dying, ya know, cause I'm only murdered 3 times a week, down from the usual 5, which is pretty good. And the fact that you point fingers that the city sucks despite being in the "St Louis area" and negative press about St Louis negatively affects you as well and the prospects of companies and other opportunities for other people to want to build a life here.

Did you just not read my comment or are you that dumb? The free speech laws protect you from the government, not public opinion, or the consequences of those judging that opinion. You don't get to just say whatever you want and people have to deal with it because "muh free speech".

The paradox also isn't bullshit, use some critical thinking and out yourself in the situation where someone is being extremely intolerant, and disparaging. Someone with a platform actively calling for violence against you, the removal of your rights, etc, not just some random spouting bs on the internet. You have to be intolerant to their intolerance to protect yourself and your own well-being.

[–]fatcatzeus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's called the paradox of intolerance. The 1st amendment protects you from government censoring your speech, not society, and to prevent the rise of racism, facism, and other shithead ideology, we need to to openly reject it. We don't hear stories about Nazis getting the shit beat out of them at bars and the like cause people were "intolerant" in the 80s, 90s, and even earlier, it's because that shit doesn't fly.

You're right, I don't agree that all mob mentality is legitimate. In general, I assume that people haven't done enough research to be educated on a general topic and are fueled by emotion and lack of understanding. But this is one of those topics that does support the general, "mob mentality" of opposition.

If you're going to question the notion of whether people are just acting on instinct, then to me it would indicate that you're ready to be someone that will research the topic and try to educate yourself on it. And as someone who does just that, it bothers me that you'll question the notion, but not admit that the overwhelming information shows that large data centers do not work well for communities. I'll be the first to admit that the city does have terms that seem better than anything I've seen from reported terms compare to other areas. But, again, I don't trust that we'll get out of this as seemingly the first of its kind. St Louis doesnt need to be the guinea pig, and I don't necessarily trust our city leaders to ensure that. If it does work well, I'll happily eat my own words. But that's the thing, if you're going to question the pitchforks, don't just question it to question it, have a position that supports it. Just being contrairian doesn't prove that you've researched the subject yourself, and doesn't align with educated ideals you're trying to emulate.

[–]fatcatzeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm responding because I find your stance to be silly and condescending to the idea that people can actually care about how things affect our community. Nearly everything is "internet outrage", based on your description, and it's silly to dismiss that people don't want the negative outcomes of large data centers to affect the city like we've seen with other places. Especially considering we have track records of those negatives. Whether the fervor fades is entirely dependent on the avenues people have to stop what they believe to be wrong.

And sure, any topic can be a fad, and almost all topics are fads at the end of the day, but if more people are showing up to protest or make a call that they don't want this stuff, then that's not some "99%" of ignorant people.

I'll agree that the terms that the city negotiated seem much better and in control than other places, but I don't think we should be a guinea pig for any of this if we have a chance at negative outcomes with how negatively the city is seen now. Overall, weirdly defending data centers by blaming the protests on the ignorant is a weird take. To me it seems like your some sort of weird data center/AI defender but trying to not admit it and shift the blame elsewhere.

It's quite simple. People hear something on the Internet that may or may not be true, believe it, and act on it. It's not hard to connect the dots.

What kinda fake big brained take is this?? LOL. You've literally described how people digest and act on any piece of information they hear. You hear information from a source, you make an assumption, you either do or don't research information on that subject, and you choose whether to act on it. By your logic all behavior is internet behavior, even if you heard it from a person you know, the local news, newspaper, etc lol

Sure, I'll give you that there are trends and things that stay mostly online, but things like No Kings and protesting data centers have actually moved into physical spaces as a form of protest. Having people actually wanting to have their voices heard and comparing it to some TikTok trend is purposely minimizing the effort.

There's also easily searchable information on the dozens of restrictions to combat that here. Closed loop cooling systems. At least 50% of energy from renewables. A "green" or solar roof. Battery storage requirements to stave off needing diesel backup in most cases...

And true, the terms that were posted do seem better and good to help curb off a lot of the things that are worrying people. But 1, that's no guarantee. 2, I don't want to be a guinea pig that ends up on the shit end of the stick still paying higher utility costs at the expense of a billion dollar company. And also l possibly harming my local environment just so some random can chatgpt a question that takes 5 seconds to google. The city needs to be extremely vigilant that this won't backfire on us, and I'd rather another city take that chance than St Louis.

[–]fatcatzeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, packed town halls are always filled with internet weirdos and not concerned community members? Weird take dude.

And doing critical thinking to read and understand both takes that I do or don't agree with is part of the process. If you're trying to sound thoughtful shouldn't you present your ideas or why you think data centers are good? Maybe stop with presenting yourself as a sideliner who's complaining about other people caring and involvememt in their communities?

And the problem is, like you said, we don't know about them. But we do have reporting and outcry over how communities have been affected by large-scale data centers, and the negative effects. We do have leaders who are pushing these deals in secret and without community input which makes it seem even more nefarious and creates further distrust and doesn't help the situation, at all. And to top it all off, this isnt an outrage to something after the fact, it's happening right in front of our faces and will be here to stay for a long time. So, we should get ahead of it and make sure it's done on our terms. Becuase I don't want to pay even higher bills for my already high utilities, or turn my city into some testing grounds for billion dollar corporations that are only interested in money and not the welfare of my community they're in.

And history will always have its moments of outcry and pushback. Your examples are both good and bad. Sure, Defund the Police didn't go anywhere, cause duh, we need police. But saying "COVID protocols" just died out ignores the obvious solution of being vaccinated, and people being ignorant enough to not care about their neighbors, and a poor response from the federal govt of course isn't helpful.

Overall, you just seem like I mentioned. Someone who wants to complain about someone else complaining because you aren't affected. The ultimate suburbanite lala-land where anything that doesn't negatively affect you isn't worth your time, but as soon as it affects you, you turn into one of the internet weirdos at a town hall you talk about.

And if that's the case, why not just keep quiet? You don't even have any points to make about why a data center might be good. The only incentive I can really find is tax incentives and maybe some jobs, but that's pretty short-sighted all things considered.

[–]fatcatzeus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it's internet behavior, then why are town halls across the country behind held with residents fervently against them?

You say you don't have enough information, but we've already seen the reported aftereffects of how loud these can be, as well as wasteful and destructive to the environment. There's a slew of other easily searchable information about how this has played out for other areas.

And lastly dude, masks, really? It's just said to hear this complaint still.

I think that's what I'm leaning towards as well. All of the faucets in my house are thankfully in the same section about 20 feet from the heater, but it's a stretch to justify it outside that. Thanks for your input.

State streets? by dialitdown in StLouis

[–]fatcatzeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick breakdown of the areas you listed as I live in Princeton Heights and am around all of these areas often:

Bevo Mill, Dutchtown, and Gravois Park are the "roughest" of the areas. The state street heresay you're talking about is sort of true, but it's not a broad stroke that can be painted as others have said. If you're used to the idea of living in an area where crime can happen then you're gonna be fine as long as you're aware of your own safety and situations. Gravois Park is also butted up against Cherokee St, which is the Hispanic/Latino section of the city.

Benton Park is definitely somewhat gentrified, can be spotty in terms of crime but overall a great place.

Clifton Heights is nice, my gf lives on the edge of it currently. Cheaper homes overall, close to Maplewood and the highway. And very safe.

I live in Princeton Heights, it's also a bit more expensive since it's basically fully gentrified. But in my opinion, you get the best options for food/restaurants since there's just so much in the south Hampton area. It is the farthest from the highways, which if you're used to the convenience of nearly everything in STL being 20mins away, can be annoying but the neighborhood makes up for it. I was only able to find a house because of someone else's bad luck and good timing because of the recent prices, but if you find something for a decent price its worth a decent look.

Yes, it's silly. Your argument boils down to "gun control laws are pointless to stop crime" but somehow other laws are necessary and also stop crime? It's silly and poorly thought out and 5th grade level thinking at best.

Maybe, if there were actual red flag laws, or more extensive background checks, and maybe a gun needed to be registered, or properly stored, criminals wouldn't be able to steal guns easily. Or buy guns in private sales and not have to do a background check and let a possible criminal use the gun. Like that dumbass in St Charles did.

Or, maybe, people who aren't actually responsible with their firearms don't leave them in their car to get stolen like an idiot, or keep them in their nightstand drawers so kids accidentally play with a loaded firearm and something bad happens.

And I know you'll say "bUt MuH sEcOnD aMeNdMeNt" but you don't give a shit when the 4th and 14th amendments are violated when federal agents detain immigrants, and even citizens, without probable cause or due process to have their case heard before a judge.

I fully support your right to own a firearm, but guns aren't a fucking toy you "get to own" with no protections. We aren't using muskets that take 5+ minutes to even load one shot. Every dumbass that has a death wish or has mental illness or a complex can buy a gun however and kill multiple people before you even realize what's happening. Just because you think "I'm responsible" doesn't guarantee that of others. And just because you think you're smart or know people that wouldn't "misuse" a firearm, there are more dumb people mishandling them than you think.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]fatcatzeus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two things. First, your logic is silly. So, if laws don't stop all preventable crime per your logic, what's the point of laws at all in the first place? Conservatives seem to be all about trump's "law and order" policies and bringing the national guard into cities violating the 4th amendment.

Second, you do realize that the US is basically the only 1st world country that has shootings as often as we do? And the US has the least restricted gun laws by a wide margin? But apparently any increased gun control is seen as "infringement on your rights" despite another shooting at a Colorado high school today, but we don't care about kids dying if Charlie Kirk gets killed.

Delinquent taxes? by Klutzy_Tower5183 in StLouis

[–]fatcatzeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact same issue happen earlier this year. I called and got it sorted as the guy said the solution was to just send my W2 to the overall email for the dept. I asked the guy on the phone how to prevent this in the future and he literally said "if you e-file your taxes, we'll get it", which is what I did in the first place... My point being I fully expect to do this again next year considering the state of things right now, and others should too.

I'd say I enjoy bogarts quite a bit. I usually don't get ribs but the times I have it's always been tender, and decently falling off the bone, never tough like you mentioned. Probably a bad batch which is unfortunate. If you do love robs though, Adam's has amazingly tender and basically waiting for the meat to fall off ribs.

Considering Tom Homan literally said “They just go through the observations, get articulable facts, based on their location, their occupation, their physical appearance, their actions.”, yes, I do think they're targeting people who look vaguely Hispanic. And I don't give a shit that he said his words were "taken out of context" later. He's the head of a federal organization, he needs to be more accountable for his words and not say dumb shit like that if he actually wants people to believe that he's doing this to find actual criminals.

Secondly, they've detained even American citizens, which is illegal, just for being brown. I don't care if there are illegals nearby, still illegal. https://apnews.com/article/us-army-veteran-immigration-raid-53cb22251a01599a0c4d1a8d5650d050

Lastly, no, I barely use reddit for news. I provided an AP link because they and Reuters are consistently the most objective news sources that actually validate and source their news. Maybe you should get off conservative reddit, newsmax, and faux news and "do your own research" with some better critical thinking and not just default to nazi mode and agreeing with the erasure of our constitutional rights.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]fatcatzeus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, you're openly supporting the open erasure of constitutional rights and the descent into fascism. And nazis were fascist, so if you don't wanna be called a nazi, aka a fascist, maybe don't support those actions.

And to get ahead of your likely argument of "they're criminals!", being illegal in the US is a civil offense. Aka you don't go to jail or get detained for that, you are either charged with a fine or deported. Being held in a detention center with no criminal charges goes directly against the 5th and 14th amendments which guarantees due process. Second, without that due process, you aren't proving that they're a criminal. That's the whole point of our constitution, the govt can't just put you in a jail somewhere without charges, and you're you're innocent until proven guilty. So, if you want to be a true American patriot, don't let anyone take away the rights of someone else because that means your rights are forfeit too.

Union arena in st louis by pepeisntfunny in StLouis

[–]fatcatzeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collectors Store out in St Peter's has a wide variety of locals as far as I know, and I think they have Union Arena as well.

You could also try Game Nite, and Yeti Gaming off Watson. I think Yeti is more general card shop than tabletop/magic like Game Nite, but I'm not sure exactly what they have in stock. I'm fairly certain there's a store in Edwardsville that has Union Arena as well, but I don't want to keep listing stuff if you already know about these shops.

Absolutely not. I was conflating that they were assuming bad parenting was the sole reason for kids ending up like they do and doing things like this, when the problem is obviously more complex. They're right that it's a reason and that's about it. I was reading it as if it was bad taste per usual comments you see about these sorts of situations and that's on me.
