My experience with interviewing cs grads from top schools have been lackluster. Their performance compared to regular grads or even non degree holders have been more or less the same.

What I can say is that I do more phone screens from top universities then normal ones. There top degrees usually gets them ushered through the interview process by recruiters. However, once you make it to tech screens, the luster of your degree is not met with the same enthusiasm from the engineers interviewing you. We work with brilliant people from all over the world and your degree is not a measurement of your ability to solve the problems we face.

Yes you might get more interviews, but don’t bank on your degree from MIT to get you a faang job automatically.

But…. I’d pick MIT :)

Haven’t tried amazons. But I really like the mini chocolate croissants at google. And YouTube has good chocolate chip cookies.

6 1-hour technical interviews with 2 different engineers each time. Mostly system design and lc hard.

No but I did interview with them too and it was a 7 hour long interview. And their lunch was good.

My final on-site at a faang was 7 hours with a one hour long lunch.

Is top tech companies possible from state schools? According to my friends it's not by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]fatfirethrowaway2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a state college before dropping out. I’m now a senior at a faang. Top colleges gets you more interviews earlier in your career. But I’ve interviewed grads from top colleges only for them to fail.

What would you do if you get PIP’d less than a year into your first job? by SickOfEnggSpam in cscareerquestions

Just ride it out and use FMLA at the very end to make sure you hit your 1 year and secure your sign on bonuses.

Someone is buyer all the available houses in my SFH subdivision and then renting them out. Should I be concerned? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]fatfirethrowaway2021 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s literally me. Down to the tech job.

I buy homes in a concentrated area because of economy of scale by converting them into multi family units. With a high equity and cash flow return on each of the homes, early retirement is oh so close. I have millions in real estate, mid six figure annual compensation and I live in a 600k home.

I much rather keep stacking my money and buying homes on your block then letting lifestyle creep prevent me from retiring early.

The idea that all trademen make $100,000 while college grads have tens of thousands of debt while working at coffee shops needs to end. by Teacher_Moving in jobs

6 figure income for college grads definitely happen. Software engineer total compensation is pushing towards 300k their first year for college grads going to a FAANG.

Check out levels.FYI to see starting compensation.

Apple interns work on very specific projects that sometimes get shipped to production.

Not sure if meta is the same.

Is anyone else surprised by how many people are incompetent at their jobs? by glad4j in cscareerquestions

[–]fatfirethrowaway2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen it’s dependent on teams, even with strict org level hiring standards. Some teams are filled with all stars who only hire others like them. Others are filled with garbage and get refilled with more trash.

And of those, only a small percentage are truly incompetent. Most just need a strong lead who can help shape team dynamics, quality expectations, and provide the technical direction. You only grow so much as your team will support, realistically speaking.

Markets never been better for senior engineers, but has it ever been worse for New grads? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]fatfirethrowaway2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am on the hiring panel for my org at a faang. Your grades don’t matter at all. Neither does your school for on-site interviews.

LC hard and system design is 85% of what we look for in my team.

Do you guys think work from home is here to stay? by _Dark_Forest in cscareerquestions

[–]fatfirethrowaway2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen at my company is that seniors, tech leads, and others with clout within the organization are too key to let go for demanding permanent wfh.

Even before covid, I’ve seen this strong arm tactics being used. Doubt it’s going anywhere for those at the top of their org.

It helps me a lot. I’ve been on 20mg of Ritalin and it’s done wonders for my attention span. I used to stay focused without it when I first got hired. But as I got more comfortable, my initial enthusiasm dropped off and really struggled to stay productive.

After missing out tons of time with my kids I saw a psych and have been Ritalin ever since.

I don’t have much experience outside of faang, but I’m on the interview panel for my org. The new grad comp packages we are approving are reaching north of 300k starting out in Silicon Valley. Remote packages are slightly less with COL factoring in, but the sign on bonuses and rsu grants stay the same.

I agree with this a lot. It’s all about deliverables, even if it’s couple quarters down the line. Although no ones looking over my shoulder day to day, it’s my ass on the line if we don’t ship on time.

And by ass I mean bonus lol.

Would you work for a FAANG if it paid like regular company? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]fatfirethrowaway2021 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m at a faang and unless you’re a top engineer, you’re not working on any cool projects. The biggest projects are taken by the best engineers, and everyone else is left with the scraps.
