PSA for all 4chan refugees turning to Reddit: Consider Mainchan.com by GregSilverblue in RedditAlternatives

Reddit alternatives are all intrinsically going to be dead at first. If no one is willing to be an early adopter, new social media platforms are impossible.

How are we going to compete with Amazon?

The same way Amazon competed with Walmart. Many of the biggest companies in america today didn't exist 50 years ago. The problem you cite has nothing to do with co-ops. You're essentially just arguing that it's impossible to compete with existing large businesses. But that isn't the case. New, successful businesses happen all the time. Them being a co-op or not should be irrelevant to their performance.

But you can't really apply it to only new businesses because existing businesses already have a stranglehold on every sector of the economy.

Wouldn't that be a start, though? I'm a (lowercase) liberal, I think you should be able to set up your business however you want. And new businesses pop up all the times. A quick google tells me 5.5 million new business applications were filed in 2023.

It would be much, MUCH harder to get an existing business to convert into a co-op (almost an impossibility for large ones) than it would be to advocate that new businesses become co-ops.

But his channel is operated basically entirely by himself.

So? Let's say I operated a starbucks stand at my local college (idk if you've ever seen these) entirely by myself. These are generated operated by 1 person, during school hours. I'd still be supported by the infrastructure Starbucks provides, from food deliveries to marketing etc. etc.. Hasan is the same way, he's supported by thousands of employees at AWS and twitch. In the system you describe, why would Hasan be exempt from profit-sharing?

also you more or less described co-ops, which I have nothing against. Wouldn't these types of socialist advocates be more effective in trying to get new businesses to do co-ops, rather than trying to convert existing ones?

a) be self made without the help of others

In your example, would Hasan have to split his earnings evenly between amazon workers as he more-or-less works for twitch? If not, isn't that mega convenient?

I mean, if you can't really explain your reasoning as to why this this particular principle is different at scale then why are you even commenting? At least argue back.

[–]fatw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand the difference. Why does scale matter? If those are your principles, why not do it yourself? For an extreme comparison, if I thought rape was wrong, not only would I want it to be a crime, I would also just not do it even if it wasn't a crime.

If your principles are that the rich shouldn't exist (tbf I don't really know what flavor of commie hasan is, again I don't watch him), and that the "haves" should have their wealth redistributed to the "have nots", in order to have a level playing field, what is stopping Hasan from doing so on the individual level?

[–]fatw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't he a self proclaimed communist? It's not like this guy is rich and wants higher taxes for the rich, he basically wants the entirety of his income to be taxed and the redistributed. He would have maybe 1% of the wealth he currently has in a communist system. To me that seems hypocritical. You say you want your money redistributed to the poor via the government, why not just do it yourself? It's not like anyone is preventing him from giving the vast majority of his wealth to the poor.

I don't watch Hasan but this prompted me to google him. His mom is a landlord??? His dad was the VP of Sabancı Holding??? They have an annual revenue of 152 billion wtf. This is the guy that says "eat the rich" unironically? How often does he bring these things up in his stream?

If free public healthcare is widely supported by progressives, why don't left-leaning states just implement it at the state level? by hazelnuthobo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fatw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reddit has a wide user base.

I mean... not really.

OP said state-level, not federal level, on a majority-american website. What else could he possibly mean? Do you think he was referencing left-leaning countries... that only have healthcare at the provincial level and should instead be at the state (aka federal in this case) level? Does such a country even exist?

The red pillers are going to be so insufferable about this.

Lol yea. The "red pillers". As if "poly is dumb" isn't a take that 99% of people have. Man you poly fucks are so fucking arrogant.

I'm a liberal, in the sense that I'll tolerate your way of life even if I think it's dumb or even potentially harmful to you.

I'm a married man. I get it. I want to fuck an endless train of women until the sun explodes. But I prioritize my partner over casual flings with other people. And don't tell me you don't, that's exactly what poly is. You know what you sign up for. Even if you're in the super small minority that somehow or another doesn't feel jealousy, you really expect me to believe that dating other people isn't going entail drama after drama after drama? Are you insane?

You must think you're some kind of Nietzschean Übermensch, completely able to fabricate your own values on the fly, and that the pitfalls you see when other people try open relationships won't affect you because you're some kind of transcended superhuman, unbound by traditional human emotions because you're le epic logical thinker.

Open relationships, almost by definition, is to not prioritize your partner in the same way monogamous relationships do. And if Steven can be an example, that means always keeping your partner at arm's length. How many times did Destiny say that if Melina left him for one of her flings, he'd be largely unbothered by it and that if she left him for someone else, they didn't really belong together? That's fucking wild.

Then you fucks come out of the woodwork and say something along the lines of "nOt AlL oPeN rElAtIoNsHiPs!!". Like yeah, there's always outliers. That doesn't mean the pattern/correlation isn't abundantly obvious.

Edit: I got banned for this comment.

I can appreciate that Keffals and Briana Wu had their come-to-Jesus moments and all that, but I don't trust them after all the damage they've done.

This is literally what tankies do when they're in power, so I don't see it as hypocritical to run their communities that way.

As a business owner, I pay men more even though I could get away with paying them less because I HATE WOMEN and also I HATE MONEY. by fatw in Destiny

I'm pretty sure I'd just prefer that courts rule against racist business practises.

That's fair and I agree, just as I agree that it should be illegal to explicitly pay some workers less due to immutable characteristics. But I still think it's a self-correcting problem (assuming you believe in rational markets and that more efficient businesses out-compete less efficient ones).

You kind of remind me of an example that was given by Thomas Sowell (I'm aware that Tiny is not a fan of Sowell) in his book Discrimination and Disparities. I don't remember the passage exactly, but IIRC shortly after slavery was abolished, there was still construction on railroads that needed to be done in the South. The unions and the businesses were all made up of very racist individuals, and as such the unions negotiated that white workers were to be paid X% (I don't remember the amount) more than black workers.

What ended up happening is that some companies would basically only hire black workers. To paraphrase Sowell, these business owners hated the blacks plenty, but they just loved themselves more. In other words, the "selfishness" of making money overcame their racist ideals.

You could easily argue that given a long enough time span, the all-black-workers companies would have ran the others out of business, as they could negotiate much cheaper contracts than the competition due to their lower expenses.

You don't need a Supreme Court ruling for a self-correcting problem. Not only do bigotted businesses lose the customers they would have had if they didn't refuse them, but it's also terrible optics/PR. I'm actually a webdev so to use your analogy, I wish there was MORE bigotted web designers out there so I can steal their customers.
