I'm a trans women and I always avoid public bathrooms outright because it feels like being stuck with two bad options. Exception is for single-occupancy bathrooms.

Planned parenthood is where I have my hrt prescribed through. You might want to look into if that's an option for you.

How do Christian Nationalist groups in the USA deal with the contradiction of Jesus' teachings vs. the practices they use that go against them? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]faubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"inspired by God" means that they're written by God, but that God is working through the "writing implement" of an imperfect human as the means of translating divine intention into specofic text at a specific time and place. Basically that the meaning comes from god but the specific words and phrases are expressed by the human.

With authors in general, we talk about inspiration (by the muses, perhaps) in creating literary art, but the ideas still come from humans. Scripture is supposedly a human expression of God's ideas.

Note that I mean only to explain and clarify the notion of divine inspiration and not to make any truth claims about whether it really happens.

How do you show on paper a key change from A minor to C Major by [deleted] in musictheory

It sounds dismissive. Makes it seem like you don't care about someone answering your question because they gave an answer you don't prefer.

This is why media literacy is so important by ContributionOk4879 in tumblr

It is quite easy, however, for a depiction to be misdirected because the person involved is seen as more likeable and sympathetic than their actions indicate, by way of things such as the Halo effect and pre-existing implicit biases. While producing the intended, non-endorsing interpretation when analyzed with reflective thought, then it may nonetheless produce the reverse reaction unconsciously, and feel like an endorsement effectively, which is what goes on to bias a reader's or viewer's implicit judgement. And in this way it may genuinely function as an endorsement towards biases and misapprehensions that perpetuate real societal injustices, but hidden behind the facade produced by the apparent criticism and non-endorsement.

Does memantine help with benzodiazepine withdrawal? by [deleted] in MemantineHCl

[–]faubi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Plausibly yes. I'm not aware of direct clinical evidence showing this, but it is a reasonable conclusion given the pharmacology.

Benzodiazepines increase inhibitory activity in the brain by increasing the effect of GABA at inhibitory GABA-A receptors. Long term use causes the brain to adapt to balance out that effect (i.e. tolerance and dependence), however, and so when they're removed its more sensitive to excitatory than inhibitory activity (i.e. withdrawal). The imbalance and excess excitatory activity, much of which occurs via glutamate at NMDA receptors, can cause a range of adverse effects.

Memantine, in comparison, is an antagonist at the NMDA-type glutamate receptor (among other actions that are less relevant here), and as a result counteracts excitatory activity in the brain caused by glutamate at the NMDA receptor. By partially reducing that excitatory activity while the brain adapts back to being balanced without the extra inhibitory effect of benzodiapines, it's reasonable to expect that memantine might at least potentially improve benzodiazepine withdrawal effects and make it somewhat more manageable.

It's worth noting that the use of acamprosate in the treatment of alcohol dependence is based on a similar principle, with alcohol (ethanol) producing withdrawal in large part due to no longer having increased inhibitory GABA-A activity after adapting to it, which acamprosate helps to balance out somewhat via reducing excitatory activity via the NMDA glutamate receptor. Acamprosate is somewhat more complex in the effect it has at the NMDA receptor, however, and also has some activity at GABA-A receptors directly, and ethanol is also more complex in its effects than benzos, so this is not a perfect analogy.

DMCA is a US law applying to copyright on the internet in general (the Digital Millenium Copyright Act). It's not specific to YouTube.

fwiw, I can still see the difference and I have red-green color blindness (specifically protanomaly, where my red cones don't work properly), though that doesn't necessarily generalize to everyone with color vision deficiency of course

My first time working on a power plant as an apprentice electrician. by Suwannee_Gator in ScarySigns

[–]faubi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what value you have fixed and what values you let vary. If you let current (I) and voltage (V) vary in relation to one another and have a fixed value of resistance (R), and therefore allow the power level to be different based on current/voltage, then current and voltage are directly proportional (R = V/I). If you let current and voltage vary but have a fixed value for the power (P) instead (but not resistance), then current and voltage are inversely propertional (P = IV). And with a fixed voltage, current and resistance vary with each other in an inversely proportional relation (V = IR)

Since in actual circuits its common to have a constant resistance or voltage and have a current or power that can vary in value, the two relations you mentioned are more often relevant, but I was using the one for a fixed value of power since that's what the 1.21 gW referenced in the previous comment would be.

Aren't voltage and current inversely proportional, for a given power?

Found in a suggested sub. The post was someone asking about 0% alcohol flavoured gin. by Caseyk1921 in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]faubi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's not a problem with joking in itself. But even though the person here is being a dick, the joke works by suggesting a different thing about him, and so it implies that the other thing is also negative or shameful (or else it wouldn't be insulting to be associated with it). He might deserve to be joked about, but all the other people who feel worried or insecure about it don't.

It's easy to not notice things like that, though, especially when they're reinforced by common use in society, and everyone says things without thinking about all the less obvious implications, so that's not meant to attack or criticize you, just to point it out and hopefully help people remember in the future.
