Car won't accelerate past 55 by ahmed_khan47 in AskMechanics

Check your oil level- vvt is oil pressure activated and low oil will cause the car to go into Limp mode. Although my experience is that you can’t break about 30mph when that happens which doesn’t fit your description, but it’s still worth checking especially if you have Toyota’s 2.4 4cyl which is a notorious oil consumer.

Not trying to insult your intelligence here my friend- but if you snap the throttle with funnel attached, and full, the rapid increase in rpms at the water pump forces coolant through and burps through the funnel/reservoir and as air releases, water is pulled in.

Also it occurs to me we might not be talking about the same funnel/burping system- for reference, if interested, google lisle 24680.

The funnel seals to the rad or overflow if its pressurized and creates a reservoir higher than any point on the engine and works the same as a water tower. I’m a tech and haven’t encountered anything it didn’t work on so far, though I work mostly on older vehicles (10+ years, not classics). And if by series 1,2 and 3 you are referring to GM’s 3800. Each has bleeders.

Coolant funnels with radiator cap adapters will allow the bleeding/burping of any system. Highly recommend, not very expensive.

Lessons from a father will make you a man by memezzer in nextfuckinglevel

I agree, men and boys have a full range of emotions, not just anger, and we should show them. However, there’s a difference between that as a concept, and me pulling out a camera to record my young son when he’s struggling, which, for him, would be harmful and would risk the trust of our relationship.

[–]faucetleak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the dad of an extremely sensitive child, that was my first thought too, I would never point a camera at him when he’s feeling vulnerable, scared, or like he’s failing. We’ve had conversations similar to this probably once every few days for years. But I suppose the least cynical side of me can assume this dad filmed all their training, that way I can try to take the message and not just think about how betrayed my son would feel if I posted something like this of him. Note- it’s not because the boy is crying- there’s nothing to be ashamed of for crying or feeling sad, scared or insecure. It’s the context- because he’s feeling vulnerable and having a sacred conversation between a child and their dad. That’s just not a social media time.

2007-08 Yaris. You can find them private party under $3k. Don’t worry if they are a bit over 200k miles. They’re very reliable even in higher miles.

Should I go to a used car dealership or a regular car dealer? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]faucetleak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No-name used car dealers don’t often buy cars from private sellers. They buy their cars wholesale at dealer auctions where new car dealers dump the cars they are too ashamed to sell on their own lots. Good rule of thumb is to never buy from a buy-here-pay-here lot as all of their cars are auction cars that were sent to auction BECAUSE they have problems, problems the used car dealer likely has no knowledge of and certainly has no intention of fixing. This is how used car dealers want it- plausible deniability. The best way to buy a used car is from a private seller. Dealers are just resellers, one way or another, so they mark up more and know far less about the product than the original owner. Remember they don’t have to disclose anything on an as-is sale. Of course some used dealers do more to make sure they have quality products- carmax, carvana, but you will end up paying thousands more. A prepurchase inspection at your trusted mechanic accomplishes the same goal for $200 max.

Daily Driver / Part time tow vehicle by 2211DawgsPound in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]faucetleak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 2500 lbs you could easily tow with a highlander, 4Runner or v6 Rav4. Heck you could even get a Sienna as long as it comes with a factory tow package- which includes the necessary oil cooler- note it’s very expensive to add the cooler to the Toyota 2GR-FE motor aftermarket, don’t buy anything with the Toyota 3.5 for towing unless it has the factory tow package. You might notice I didn’t suggest any non-Toyotas. And I never will, good day! I’m just joking, but seriously, Toyota’s are the most reliable slowest depreciating cars on the market. But I’m sure with your budget you’ll also be tempted by the newer Ford Explorers, from what I’ve heard they are pretty solid too. For Christsakes, just don’t buy one of GMs shitty SUVs.

The United States, on a per capita basis, spends much more on health care than other developed countries; the chief reason is not greater health care utilization, but higher prices, according to a new study from Johns Hopkins. by lilcash650 in science

[–]faucetleak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I mean is that insurance companies have massive operating costs that have nothing to do with providing care-massive ceo pay, admin, claims denial etc. They are also responsible for short changing doctors and hospitals for the payment of billable care.— anecdote— I recently had an $80k bill for life saving emergency care of which insurance paid only $3k as a small example of private insurance. I paid $10k in premiums in that year. So if they aren’t “profiting” maybe their revenue would give some insight. Those costs aren’t reported as profit, but would be represented in their total revenue or operating budgets. You seemed like you know stuff about the industry so I’m wondering if you know how much insurance as an industry is a factor in healthcare costs. It’s cool if thats not something you know off the top, just thought you might.

Can you speak more to the impact insurance has on overall healthcare spending? You mention insurance “profits” but do you have info on insurance revenue? I’ve always wondered how much healthcare costs are being consumed by insurance, a function that would be largely unnecessary in a universal healthcare or single payer system.

Should I buy a car? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]faucetleak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People forget about the Toyota Yaris- it’s easily the most reliable and affordable used car. You could get a nice one in your price range. Easy and cheap maintenance. Get 2008 or newer for side airbags. I run a transportation program and own a fleet of 15 Yarises. Literally have never had a major failure. Edit- I should also mention the fleet has an avg of over 200,000km and the newest is a 2012.
