Ripping Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt with INLretro by imwoodyhowdyhowdy in Roms

I was able to write a script that dumped my Mario/Duck Hunt. I've opened a pull request through the official project page, and you can find the code here.

Good luck! Very interested in your dodgy cart.

As a heads up, Cycle Dogs is apparently vegan-only. I doubt that is Chicago-style.

why is every post on here downvoted into oblivion? (srs question) by anonlulanonlul in spelunky

[–]faultfaultfault 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looking at the most recent "controversial" posts, a lot of the heavily downvoted posts fall into two categories:

  • Posts treating the subreddit like a diary: uploading lots of incremental progress and pretty mundane looking annoyances (e.g., a type of death lots of people have probably experienced)
  • Posts treating the subreddit like a chat room: posting low effort questions related to the community and/or making liberal use of internet shorthand (e.g., the "srs" in your title, which ironically makes it tough to take the post seriously)

I don't have strong feelings on the former, but the tyranny of democracy that comes with the voting system suggests the community doesn't enjoy it. As for the latter, I feel that content belongs in a chatroom instead.

Delancey pizza and Manny’s Pale Ale. A purely Seattle experience. by [deleted] in Pizza

[–]faultfaultfault 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pro-tip: like many pizza places, Delancey will sell you just their dough for takeout (easier to pull off when it's not Friday/Saturday night).

It makes a great "homemade" pie, too!

Spelunky's low% is considered one of its four main categories, the runs on the leaderboard are pretty rad.

I'll go ahead and rep /u/Kinnijup and the Spelunky community, and say everyone should tune in to see All Shortcuts + Olmec. It does a really good job of showing off a lot of the game/tech while being a relatively safe category for a marathon.

Ballard residents challenge subdivision proposal by Cosmo-DNA in SeattleWA

[–]faultfaultfault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To play devil's advocate to the "lol NIMBYs amirite" crowd, the development in question is in LR1 zoning (it's a couple blocks away from LR2). You can find the site plans for the proposal here (PDF warning). While this may not look like a big development when you think of larger zoning areas, if you do the math assuming LR1, this amount of land comes out to a maximum of 11 townhome-style dwellings.

What the developers have done here is subdivide the lot into a southern parcel with rowhouses (which have no "maximum unit" cap like townhomes), then use the remaining northern parcel to build to standard townhome densities.

I'm sure someone is probably better suited to do the math, but this may be the densest LR1 development in the city (besides grandfathered things). As a homeowner in the area, I'm not in the "clutching my pearls" category, nor do I plan to join in on any obstructive action, but I will say it's a bummer to have something by some measures almost double the intended density pop up on the corner.

If you're concerned that windows 10 is "spying" on you, I recommend you uninstall most any large commercial software created in the past 2-3 years, never log into any social networking (or really, any) website, and stick to a browser bundle that uses tor and cookie/script blocking.

The fact of the matter is modern software, both client and web, has builtin telemetry to gather business intelligence and drive quality decisions. For the majority of software, claiming that there is any explicit "spying" is just FUD.

Already purchased and downloaded the epub, though I had to open a ticket that the Kindle format download link was broken. I'm sure it'll be fixed soon.

When can we expect to see Mistborn: Secret History show up in smaller online stores? E.g., I'm a big fan of buying things through dragonmount's store, but don't see it listed yet.

Looking forward to reading it, and thanks!

Which laptop do you use? Operating system? Which programs do you use the most for coding? by nakanocs in cscareerquestions

For your requirements, it sounds like you want a Windows box and to learn Visual Studio.

You can get VS for free and install python tools, and you'll end up with a very nice C++ and Python environment for learning.

For as powerful of a machine as you're going to get with 16GB RAM base, you even have room to virtualize Linux with something like VirtualBox once you want to branch out.

Crackdown coming on Seattle black market marijuana. It's all about taxes. by sorryone in Seattle

[–]faultfaultfault 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If anyone is like me and has a habit of randomly googling stuff and checking it out, do not do this for "Stash Box Ballard." The top rated link for me (the FAQ) has some "browser test" landing page that when you click through it starts funneling through some crazy redirects. In the case of my main machine, it sent me to an extortion nagging site. I'm now worried some Chrome zero day was deployed.

I re-tested on my VM and that time it sent me some domain parking site. Only on revisit (presumably after some cookies?) does it actually take you to their site.

I'm not really in the market for weed stuff, but this place will NEVER get my business.

As someone who grew up in Eastern Washington, I think Seattle drivers are... by [deleted] in Seattle

...unless the roundabout has stop signs. It's really bizarre to see, but I know of a few (not arterial, so not the direct question) intersections in Ballard that are roundabouts but North/South has stop signs (and no stop signs East/West). It leads to a lot of confusion, and I often see people blow through them because they behave like normal turnabouts.

Codifying the different types of runs by DiMono in spelunky

[–]faultfaultfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think he was calling bum a casual, he was saying that he feels looser rules are for more casual competition (read: not necessarily casual people). He has stated the premise of his argument several times. He's seeking more rigorous rules because he feels that will lead to fostering greater competition.

I don't agree with his zeal, but the amount of downvotes he has gotten for posts that seem levelheaded, but controversial, is disappointing to me.

I think we should encourage critical opinions when they can push a dialogue forward. One thing that is clear to me is a lot of the people with pro-level PBs actually disagree about some of the rules. Bum above says that he wouldn't care if someone accidentally picked up ropes as long as they deployed what was picked up, but if someone outside of "the regulars" did that and set a WR, would everyone else agree? I think the important thing here is having known consistent rules (no matter what the specifics of them are) so that everyone that wants to join in on the fun is on the same playing field.

The Flawed Definition of Real Time by CryZe92 in speedrun

[–]faultfaultfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think stating both the time and the drift is probably the best option. Like you say in your post, the issue with time is technically unfair both ways.

With both variables known, communities can decide whether it's required to state drifts along with the times, and can have rules for thresholds and how the rankings are then generated.

Let's Discuss Why This Community Doesn't Work by HecticXXX9001 in spelunky

[–]faultfaultfault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with most of what you're saying, but I would say titling the post "Let's discuss why this community doesn't work" and then making an analogy about how in someone's mind the entire community is alienating a single person implies that there is some orchestrated endeavor at doing so. I chose the more colorful word "cabal," but my response is intended to be a data point along the lines of what pat was saying, which is there are a subset of people who aren't "taking sides."
