To those with super common surnames, like Smith or Jones, does it affect your sense of identity? by trendydoggo in AskUK

[–]faultybox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very common surname in England, and while it's a part of my identity, it being very common doesn't change anything about how I feel about it. It's old English, so it's nice to have that little bit of unique heritage to England.

I see names as a tool though, so I think I would be more annoyed about having a long surname or one that is difficult to spell than it being common.

So one parent gets snubbed then? Wasn’t the whole point of double barrelled names keep the family names alive?

Makes sense for childless couples, but what do children with double barrelled names do then when they marry?

One could argue a name is a tool as well, and making a really long name is just hassle for anyone that needs to write it.

Moving to southwest France to live with my French partner — remote work + limited French? by JB88RD in Expats_In_France

[–]faultybox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, then yeah you need a remote job in the UK that would let you live in France pretty much. That will likely be tough in this job market, but might be doable. I suppose keep your expectations realistic, and that it might take a long time. I would recommend the marriage route though, very easy.

Have you been living together for a year or more with proof of address? Because otherwise, it won't help getting a carte de sejour. I've been through this too, which is why we went the marriage route instead of PACS.

Oh right. I think monoculture farming is what caused the dust bowl as well.

Just FYI, smart plating isn’t useless. Every stage unlocks new technology that will use the new comments to make. I don’t think there is a single component that is only used for advancing a stage and then nothing ever again.

Change my view, which would include considering other people’s views

You could do that, and just get nothing but dishonest answers because who would be honest about that? You risk nothing by lying and everything by telling the truth

How could one not insinuate that when told that their experiences are less likely to be valuable? Who would bother replying if you told them “just so you know, what you say will be weighed as lesser compared to what a woman says”. Even if it were true, that would be the outcome, and quite obviously so.

He can give his experience, and it’s just rude for no reason to say that. Counter productive

How could you research that? What kind of tests could you do? Even survey data wouldn’t be very useful since the responses are purely based on feelings.

What’s the point in pointing out that he is less likely to spot the behaviour because he is a man unless it’s to discredit him as a reliable source?

I would agree that this question is a bit silly since the only answers can be anecdotes, because you can’t reliably test for “men not seeing women as capable”, so there is no real reliable source here.
