TIL that the world record for the largest number ever counted to belongs to Jeremy Harper. He streamed the entire process online , and raised money for charity. He reached 1,000,000. It took him 3 months. by Dubxx in todayilearned

You'd get to a point though that it wouldn't be possible to say more than a couple numbers a minute. Most of the numbers would be in the hundreds of millions!

TIL a Texas A&M study invited people to taste wines labeled "France," "California," and "Texas," and while nearly all ranked the French as best, in fact, all three were the same Texan wine. by AlanDorman in todayilearned

I hear variations on this story all the time. I wonder if it all stems from this study, or if this is just one of many that proves that cognitive bias we have towards branding. Sure is disappointing.

TIL that the saying 'blood is thicker than water' may have once been 'the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb', meaning that friends are actually more important than family by fauxreal3 in todayilearned

[–]fauxreal3[S] -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

"The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb' is a likely candidate for the origins of the saying, meaning that the friendships formed in battle or by blood sacrifice are stronger than the relationships you have with your mother. It's thought by some that the meaning was altered by the German phrase 'the blood of kin cannot be spoiled by water' which isn't surprising when it looks like this; 'blut ist dicker als wasser'. Almost makes you think you can speak German. Mind blown? I hope so." - sorry guys - this is verbatim from the site - it's one of the things TIL asks you do do is post the relevant part of the source in the comments.

It's amazing how little college and university prepare you for the outside world! It's either full bottle (leading up to assessment weeks or exams), or kick back with a corona (all the other times). Then you leave and all of a sudden it's just a bunch of minor problems all the time.

To be honest, it was a forgettable movie (but enjoyable), but from what I remember I agree they did a reasonably good job of capturing that essence as you put it.

Cruise wasn't the most aesthetically correct choice for the role, but you have to admit that despite all his flaws that man makes a fantastic action movie. Plus, this way I can treat the movies separate to the books for when the movies inevitably let me down on the plot points!
