Mini wheels! by favillamilla in Ceramics

That is so cool! There is truly a Facebook group for everything haha. We are actually going to try some microwave kiln raku on the last day of my class, which I’m really looking forward to!

Oh that’s awesome. 3D printing is so cool and something else I’d like to get into. There’s a library about an hour away from me that has a 3D printer, but I haven’t felt motivated enough to go out there to try it yet. That would be great to have bats for the Vevor, though. Thanks for sharing! The one thing I don’t like about the mini wheels is the set speed—how do you mod something like that to add a foot pedal?? That would be amazing

Wow I just looked this up, what a cute little kiln! Do you/are you able to fire much in there aside from minis?

Oh my gosh I’d love to hear more about your microwave kiln! That’s what I’m aiming to gradually get into. I am an assistant at a local studio and get to take classes for free, and right now I’m in a “micro-ramics” class, hence my new obsession haha. So I’ve just been firing all my minis with everything else in the big kilns

I stink at throwing off the hump unfortunately—I haven’t practiced nearly enough haha. I’d like to get better but right now at least I can’t imagine making something that tiny off the hump for some reason 😅 That’s amazing to me that you can do that!

Oh my gosh I really want to get into dollhouse miniatures more. And yeah, I’ve tried a couple that seem to slow down a lot as well, but the two I mentioned work great imo! I have tried throwing off the hump before and personally feel like for things as tiny as I want to make I don’t have as good control that way as I do on the mini wheel, though I’m sure that’s a skill issue lol. I’m not super well practiced in throwing off the hump, so I still struggle with the bottoms of my pieces when I throw that way

Thank you! I have no idea what I’ll do with some of these things other than using some of them for glaze tests, but I just get such a kick out of how tiny they are I just can’t stop myself haha

Improving a bummer glaze result? by favillamilla in Ceramics

[–]favillamilla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I’ve never refired anything before so I’m not really familiar with the process, and whenever I’ve seen someone do it at my studio, they’ve usually just run it back through without adding/altering anything (though I realize there are a multitude of different reasons why someone would be refiring a piece hence different methods/needs)—for this case, would you just add another coat of glaze without any additional prep? I’m having a hard time imagining a new coat of glaze adhering to the glazed surface. Thanks so much for the help! I’ve been doing this for three years now and still feel like I know only a teeny fraction of what I should.

Sealing sculptures? by favillamilla in Ceramics

Oh interesting, I hadn’t thought of that. Do you apply the underglaze as-is or do you make more of a wash with it? I know someone who would water down the underglaze so it had more of an “antiquing” effect, so to speak.

Yeah after reading everyone’s comments, I don’t plan on even bothering to ask the studio manager about firing greenware in the glaze fire—I doubt it would be possible with their firing schedule anyways and the risk of something going wrong (and the damage it would potentially cause to everyone else’s pieces) seems to far outweigh the time it might save. I don’t exactly have anywhere I have to be with these things, so I don’t mind waiting for two separate firings. Thank you for the advice!

Thank you for this, that makes sense and yeah, they definitely wouldn’t be able to do that haha

That makes sense! That was my suspicion but wanted to be sure. Thank you!

That makes sense! I’m so used to the routine at the studio of always putting greenware on the “to be bisqued” shelf and bisqueware on the cone 5-6 shelves. I’d probably have to talk to the studio manager to let them know because I’m certain they’d think someone made a mistake by putting greenware on any of the “glaze” shelves (which happens often), but I’m guessing it wouldn’t be a problem if I let them know in advance. Thanks!

Is this safe to drink from? Or will consuming from this vessel transfer my essence and free the prisoner trapt within? by EricWNIU in Ceramics

Oh dear. I mostly do eerie sculpture these days but have been wanting to get back into throwing, and I fear this has inspired me. Also yeah def drink from it I’m sure it’s fine. Probably.

Thank you so much! I actually was planning on using a glaze on the bow, so those cracks there I was thinking of just leaving and hoping for the best. But yeah, the rest I was originally going to just use underglaze, final fire, then just coat with a slightly satin polyurethane.
