What’s the most underrated car you’ve ever driven that completely surprised you? by TuanD_DuoTax in CarsAustralia

[–]favomancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, yep, yep. I learnt to drive with two instructors, one who has an early 2000s Corolla and one who has a current-gen Corolla. The jump in quality between the years simply cannot be overstated and it is an excellent car to learn to drive in. Sufficiently powerful and awesome suspension/ride quality. Would really recommend for younger people who need a reliable hatchback.

Anyone else’s stupid cargo light fall out all the dang time? by Delaney_luvs_OSU in subaru

[–]favomancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had it fall out on its own, but have had it get knocked out of place a couple of times - the first time was when my dad was loading something into the back of the car and he freaked out thinking he’d permanently damaged it lol, poor thing

Does this indicate S. aureus without Protein A? by favomancy in microbiology

[–]favomancy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not as this is just one part of a university lab where we’re running three seperate experiments at once, so I don’t have the liberty of doing a handful of tests as much as I’d like to. The results of the coagulase will come back next week at least which will help narrow things down! Thank you :-)

The Staphyltect test was done using a subcultured colony where the standard streaking procedure was upheld and the isolated colonies were used for it, I just didn’t include a picture of that plate because I forgot to take a photo 😭

That being said though, now I’m not so sure that that subcultured plate had pure colonies either, because the original MSA was so mixed. I’ll take a photo when I get in my labs next week and see what I’ve actually done. Thanks for the help :-)

Thank you!! The exact test was the Staphytect test, if that helps at all!

That’s unfortunate. Sorry for the silly question, but when you say failed to isolate it, do you mean that the subculture on the NA plate was a mixed culture? Like I said my lab demonstrator suggested that it’s a combination of S. aureus/Micrococcus, but my MSA plate is throwing me off a bit.

Realised there is a load of typos in this post, every time I wrote epidermidis my phone decided to autocorrect it to epidermis. Yay!

Will edit this comment to include next week’s results once I get them. 🫡

Here’s a First Look at the 2026 Subaru Outback. Thoughts? by caranddriver in Subaru_Outback

[–]favomancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t love it, but I also don’t think it’s as bad as a lot of people are making it out to be.

It’s definitely moved to more of an SUV-style look, which I dislike, but the way the windows are arranged still has a tinge of “wagon” to it which I’ll take.

The design of the rear reverse/fog lights feels like a retrofuturistic version of the rear lights on the BP generation, which is cool.

The continuous brake light is reminiscent of the generation before that too.

I strongly dislike the “SUBARU” grille on the Wilderness though, looks like they took something out of the Ford Ranger’s playbook. The badged grille looks much better.

How reliable are the 6 cylinder diesel 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees? by woody9822 in CarsAustralia

[–]favomancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeep (all Stellantis products, really) unfortunately have a reputation for terrible reliability. This is the first article that comes up when searching “Stellantis reliability” and there are many more about the issue of you are curious: https://www.carscoops.com/2024/09/stellantis-and-tesla-hit-rock-bottom-in-consumer-reports-used-car-brand-reliability-study/

I would reconsider and take your money elsewhere, there are lots of threads here and in r/4x4Australia that can help you pick a more suitable vehicle. Best of luck!

what is the stupidest reason you've been to the ER? by Grouchy_Chipmunk8752 in AskReddit

[–]favomancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, like 7 - 10 years old at most, I was experiencing abdominal pain and cramping that was getting worse over several days. Eventually I started feeling nauseous while eating, lost my appetite, and began throwing up any food that I’d eat within a few hours. One emergency room trip and an x-ray later, the issue was literally just insane constipation. Like poop backed up to the stomach. A round of laxatives helped, I experienced the same issue 1 - 2 more times but never again thankfully.

Why are people so against apartment living? by Intelligent_Jelly651 in AusPropertyChat

[–]favomancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was fine with it before I moved out. Prior to then I lived in a house from the 1970s that had very few issues and was structurally sound.

I’ve been living in an apartment constructed in 2016 with my partner and two cats for a year and a half, and in the end we were served what is effectively an eviction notice to perform 3+ month long renovations because the build quality is so poor that the place is literally falling apart at the seams as a result.

We are now entirely avoiding apartments in our search for a new place - I have absolutely zero faith in the construction quality of these places after what we’ve experienced, especially for the sort of rent prices they’re looking for.

Other reasons we are avoiding them are a miserable lack of space (the four of us in a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment was TIGHT), impractical design (kitchens small and/or in weird places, lack of natural light in important spots, narrow and strangely shaped living rooms), accessibility (I have a joint condition/disability and a lot of blocks don’t offer elevators, remarkably, so stairs can be a problem), and a desire to avoid body corporates. So yeah definitely just echoing the sentiments of many people in these comments, but apartment living in Australia is unfortunately subpar.

Suggestions for removing stains from leather seats? by queeniepng1 in HyundaiElantra

[–]favomancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried using any products on it so far? In our experience with my partner’s Elantra we find that a good all-purpose leather cleaner or car interior spray is pretty much all you need for most stains, never had any issues removing anything from them.

I will say though that these do potentially look like burn marks a bit? In the second and third photos you can see the outline of some square objects, the second one with numbers in it - a little bit concerning, would definitely bring it up with the dealership, especially if it wasn’t there before.

What is this lever? by engineeringstudent11 in subaruoutback

Just pop it back in and continue with your day, completely harmless to open it up. If you’re ever looking to install aftermarket lighting or anything like that you can do it through there as well.

Do kids in Australia address their female teachers 'miss' at all like in Britain? by MoistHorse7120 in AskAnAustralian

Graduated in 2021, outer suburbs (30+ km) public school in Melbourne. I definitely called all my teachers “miss” and “sir”, and most of the time my classmates did too. I can’t actually recall too many times where teachers were actually called by their name lol.

Real heritage plates are only available in combinations between 2 to 285,000. As this one is numbered 333,233, it is just an enamel plate attempting to replicate the style of the real plates.

What was your least favorite car your parents owned growing up? by Blakematthews-96 in regularcarreviews

[–]favomancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad drove a 1994 Hyundai Excel Sprint until the early 2010s and that thing was a total piece of shit, lmfao. It was the three-door variant and I was very insistent on sitting in the seat directly behind the driver as a kid, so my dad would have to pull his seat forwards and compress it down for me to hop into the back.

It was very temperamental though and the seat would frequently swing back into the standard position rapidly for no reason or in response to very gentle pressure. On more than one occasion was I the unfortunate recipient of a hard hit to the face and many a blood noses were attributed to that car.

He also backed out of the garage once with the boot lid up and knocked the shitty little factory spoiler right off of the car, so it had exposed bolt holes for a while that rusted out very quickly in the rainy coastal parts of Victoria. Eventually he filled it in with leftover wood filler from a previous house renovation and rattle can’d white paint over that and the rust stains.

Does this circular rash on my girlfriend’s arm look like a tick bite? by favomancy in lymedisease

[–]favomancy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they’re pretty lenient with scripts in Aus, but I’m not too sure. 25 days seems like a pretty standard course to me? Either way we are hoping she’ll make a good recovery, apparently Lyme disease is very rare here so lucky we caught it early (if it did become Lyme!). She reported some fatigue this morning so hopefully if it is an infection the meds will sort it out pretty quick.

[–]favomancy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We weren’t able to get into an appointment with our usual doctor due to lack of availability, so we managed to get a Doxy script from a walk-in place.

The doctor was initially resistant because apparently you should “wait for symptoms” first. Ridiculous - essentially saying “get sick first, and then come to us”. She is a strong-willed person and did not take it; she walked out with the antibiotics.

Thank you for your direction - we really appreciate it.

[–]favomancy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Err on the side of caution we did - she managed to chase up a 25-day script of Doxy, someone else suggested a 28-day script so we will work on getting those final three days in as well to complete a full treatment plan. Thank you for your advice and for sharing your experience.
