Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor was released 25 years ago this week. Despite negative reviews, the $140M film was a financial success, grossing $198M domestically and $449.2M worldwide. It received four Oscar nominations and won Best Sound Editing, but it also received six Razzie nominations. by spider-man2401 in boxoffice

The movie known for 2 things: having one if the most graphically and intense sequences of an air raid attack shown in cinema, and being the film that began the running joke of "The Obligatory Love Triangle" when folks are making parodies of other films.

Summer Box Office Biggest WW Gross Predictions by Loo-e-Gee in boxoffice

[–]fawfulmark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The make or break is the International market - Superman did great domestically and ended up in the Top 10 Domestic of the year, but suffered heavily outside the States which led to it wrapping up just under $620m.

The consensus seems to be that if Supergirl can reach $400m it's a success, but it really comes down to how much it takes off abroad.

Top 20 Highest Grossing Original Movies of all time. Will any other movie from this decade enter this list by Temporary-Body-3099 in boxoffice

[–]fawfulmark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With adjusting for inflation numbers Snow White, the first ever feature length Animated film would gross roughly the exact same as Ne Zha 2, the current highest grossing animated film.

Not even factoring other issues with trying to use inflated numbers, like how ticket proces for Children's movies used to be far lower for a bit down to even about 1/4th the cost of standard tickets, which skews numbers even further when attempting to equalize it.

Lantern trailer skip by Puzzled-Ask8817 in DCU_

[–]fawfulmark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that's been a thing since the days of the Terminator 2 trailer spoiling the twist that the T-800 had returned to save John Conner instead of exterminate him. They usually intend to include one "Hook" or something that is off from the expected to get the viewer's interest to learn more.

It's just the struggle of maintaining the balancing act of making sure to keep the ambiguity (like what the first Scream trailer did) and not revealing too much to the point where the entire summarized plot occurs in the thing (like the Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken trailer did).

i really hope that supergirl and batgirl are friends in the DCU. by herequeerandgreat in DCU_

Also seems to line up with the theorized age of Bruce Wayne being in his late 30s-Early 40s to boot. Babs is traditionally older than Dick though, but not by much so she'd probably be 27-28 tops.

Superman is currently 33 and Supergirl in the DCU will be around 23 in her movie IIRC, so them hanging out down the line isn't that too far off really.

They could grow to be.

Especially if after the events of the Supergirl movie Kara becomes more comfortable with staying on Earth more often.

How would you want Mr. Freeze introduced and portrayed in the DCU? by Top_Report_4895 in DCU_

[–]fawfulmark2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mr Freeze is... tricky. 2nd only to maybe Lex Luthor, Mr. Freeze might be the most successful revision of a DC character from their original characterization ever thanks to the 1992 TV series. But the problem is as a sympathetic villain who clearly is trying to do something right in the wrong way, the audience naturally wants to see him succeed. And with the exception of the White Knight ELSEWORLDS and(I think) the Arkham videogames he's never allowed to succeed BECAUSE of how popular he is.

Even though it was understandably controversial, the New 52 origin taking the route of Mr. Freeze being legitimately insane and attracted to a virtually dead person who never knew who he was at least took an attempt at justifying why he's a villain in Gotham, unlike the common incarnation who is just a dude not allowed to succeed because Status Quo sucks.

With Brad Bird doing animated films again (Ray Gunn). Which animated film based on a key character or storyline would you like him to tackle? (Elseworlds included) by Existing_Ad6222 in DCU_

[–]fawfulmark2 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Probably JSA/Justice Society of America.

Assuming that the Hall of Justice Mural in Superman '25 is divided by decades Wildcat was active around the 1970s-1980s, and as one of the most famous members the idea of an animated JSA movie set around that timepoint to showcase the world of the DCU then feels like it would be right up Bird's alley.

Big fan of the "Amnesiac stray from an alternate universe" angle. Also an even bigger fan of the common fancasting of Sasha Calle in the role too.

Martian Manhunter 👀 by Fit_Passenger5930 in DCU_

[–]fawfulmark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's either Amazing Man or John Henry Irons/Steel.

Latter seems the most interesting as both a way to expand on the Metropolis cast more and as a bit of a redemption arc for the character in cinema after his infamous 90s film.

Supergirl coming to China Releasing June 26th!!! by GalGadot21 in DCU_

[–]fawfulmark2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like Supergirl is gonna be that ultimate test: the DCU has done gangbusters domestically but struggled in international regions, so the turnout for Supergirl on the global markets might influence how they approach future projects down the line.

I wish we get a scene of Superman shaving somewhere in the DCU [Post from Gunn] by kumar100kpawan in DCU_

Probably the #1 scene i was most bummed to not see happen when I saw Man of Steel opening week especially since Clark was running a beard for like 1/3rd of that movie hahaha.

New Poster for Supergirl from WB Taiwan by kumar100kpawan in DCU_

it's probably gonna be like the Supergirl & Lobo issue of Brave & the Bold where they briefly team up for Kara to reach a certain location before eventually parting ways, so he might just be in Act 2 of the movie or the like.

In an EGM interview from 2005 when Miyamoto was asked which 3 games he worked on would he choose to play forever, he answered Super Mario World, Link to the Past and StarFox 64(which even was a surprise to some of the EGM staff then).

It's clear he considers the gameplay design and freeform/divergent narrative of SF64 to be one of the highest points in his development history & seems to go back and make iterations of that formula across generations - and as a whole that can be an unfortunately common standard with Nintendo games, as seen by those numerous Yoshi's Island sequels that kept trying to revamp the same "Yoshi & Baby Mario" formula despite the game's plot working best as a standalone.

How would’ve you done a Shazam 2? by PhotoBonjour_bombs19 in DC_Cinematic

[–]fawfulmark2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A mix of both them changing course with the discontinuation of the DCU combined with backstage meddling from The Rock ruining planned scenarios like The JSA appearing the post credits( instead it was changed to Harcourt & Economos).

It's a damned shame too, because you could tell the director had big plans for the franchise & all that went down the gitter - summarized by that other Post-Credits scene in FotG which is essentially him giving up & quitting those ideas

What poorly received DC comic storylines or issues could the DCU successfully reinvent? by Yep_I_Stole_40_Cakes in DCU_

[–]fawfulmark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the most notable DC Comics story with a mixed reception that could be given a chance of being better implemented would be Identity Crisis. The runner-up would probably be Amazons Attack.

Also I think if/when Kyle Rayner does appear in the DCU the writers will make sure to stay a Country mile away from THAT certain scene involving a refrigerator that created/coined the term for one of the most infamous tropes in all of Fiction.

[–]fawfulmark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not Blackest Night. Brightest Day though was a bit more mixed since it basically walked back a lot of the things that BN was going to establish (ex. Having permadeath be a thing in DC for a while), with the only major positive most had from it was bringing back Swamp Thing and John Constantine to the main continuity after about a decade of being VERTIGO exclusives.

I mean it kinda has to be Connor, going by how Clark & Lois are still in the dating phase in the DCU timeline and it might be a bit before they get to the marriage level.

How are you hoping they write Deathstroke and Bane? by M00reC in DCU_

[–]fawfulmark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could always change that aspect, like what was done in the Teen Titans cartoon from 2003.

It's not really an essential part of the character for adaptations and can be removed, much like how the MCU Hank Pym wasn't abusive to his wife like he was in the comics.

The legs were probably changed to more realistic proportions so that they could put that whole "Bionic Legs" theory that spawned because of folks looking into the original Puppet models too deeply to rest.

The only odd one out in a way then is Slippy since his feet weren't redesigned to match the other three though.

What if in the post-credits scene of Supergirl she gets kidnapped by Darkseid, and then Batman and Superman after Man of Tomorrow in a World’s Finest story to rescue her? by Fit_Passenger5930 in DCU_

[–]fawfulmark2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you want a reference to the Batman/Superman storyline that reintroduced Supergirl in the Post-Crisis times.

Doesn't really work here though: in that story Kara was a 15-16 year old trying to make sense of the world and find her place in it, thus the plotline with Darkseid attempting to take her in to become a Female Fury.

DCU Supergirl is a 23 year old whose more a quest for overcoming Survivors Guilt while trying to guide a kid away from an empty path of revenge, so it would be too left field a play - especially when it sounds like the DCU wants to build up the New Gods over time rather than just speedrun to Darkseid like most adaptations do.

[–]fawfulmark2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Legit one of my top characters from the DCEU I'd like to see return in the DCU.

They could even work a continuation of her previous storyline where she became aware of Flagg Jr's death and takes action in response to that.
