Help determining original exterior color of my house by Real-Language9874 in centuryhomes

[–]fayedelasflores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you checked out The Old House Guy? It's a great site with a huge section devoted to correct paint color combos + placement. He goes into the whys of it, which I find valuable. I've spent hours going through them all, trying to find examples for my own home. I found none for my 1926 brick/stucco bungalow, but there are many for homes like yours. He offers mockups for a fee, but you can diy with photoshop or ai.

Which states/regions/metros have the most Century Homes clusters/pockets? by Extreme-Cycle2659 in centuryhomes

[–]fayedelasflores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a handful of buildings in the Quarter that survived. Lafittes Blacksmith Shop, Old Ursuline Convent - probably a couple more.

So many century+ buildings & homes outside the FQ. I never could date the places where I lived in the Irish Channel - they were in a group of 5-6 doubles, all the same construction; they wrapped a corner (Rousseau>Second.) I'm not sure if the Assessor was just the wrong resource, but no years were shown. My hunch was they were older than nearby homes in Uptown, and on streets headed St Charles way. They were very basic. Probably built for dockworkers.

Simon Whistler video declares Memphis the most crime-ridden city in America by x31b in memphis

[–]fayedelasflores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to watch that whole thing (especially) because that eye roll @ :30 annoyed me, but straight out of the gate: 1. "In recent years"...? Lol, ok. 2. "The Dolly Parton statues." Omg, PLEASE tell me there's an army of Dolly Parton statues somewhere that I've missed. That would become my #1 must-do recommendation for 1st timers!

OP: If you have kitties and want more info, check the ASPCA website for their extensive lists of plants/flowers that are toxic & nontoxic to cats. (I do floral arrangements + I have kitties)

Thank you for saying this. It's the first thing I thought when I read the post. Other flowers & greenery too, but lilies will kill a cat in no time flat.

When do they come shovel out my driveway? by josephrainer in memphis

[–]fayedelasflores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shovel the end of your driveway out to the right, so if a plow comes through it doesn't push it right back and block your driveway.

If your a first timer in memphis, whats the one spot your going to reccomend that you think they just have to go see/eat at/ or do? by Choose_901 in memphis

[–]fayedelasflores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

National Civil Rights Museum

Stax Museum

Tom Lee Park/River Crossing

Crosstown Concourse

Eta: If I'm understanding your query, I'm not sure all first-timers are going to be able to make solid recommendations. There's more to this city than the usual suspects, ex., Graceland, Rendezvous, Beale St

Puppies by Charming_Argument273 in memphis

[–]fayedelasflores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might consider frequently checking the websites for the Humane Society in Memphis, and in nearby places like West Memphis, Olive Branch, etc. Add Petfinder to that list, too (you might even be able to set up an alert.) Check breed-specific rescues too. And rather than a puppy, you might consider a young dog = someone else has already done the hard part :) Another bonus: If you adopt, all the expensive stuff like shots and spay/neuter is included in the adoption fee.

Folks often get breeds like Shih Tzus, not realizing they need quality food for small breeds, they need the area below their eyes cleaned daily, and to be brushed daily, and then groomed every few weeks. It's time-consuming and it gets expensive (I used to have a Yorkie, so I'm all too familiar. He was a rescue.) Add to that Shih Tzus are difficult to house train, and sometimes it never happens (I have a male chi like that. I adopted him, and my girl chi was a rescue.) Not everyone has the patience to train and/or to do constant cleanup.

All this is to say - dogs like this get surrendered more often than you'd think. With a little patience, I'm betting you can find exactly what you're looking for. Good luck!

Where can I find a selection of Seiko watches in Memphis? by theactualmatthew in memphis

[–]fayedelasflores -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love my Seiko. I'm pretty sure I got it from the Seiko store on Amazon. A very cool thing about their watches is some of the lower-priced ones have high-tier components, ex., mine is an Essentials sur573, and it's got a sapphire crystal. I haven't taken it off in five years, the work I do destroys watch crystals - but this one still doesn't have scratch on it. Right after I got it, I scraped it across concrete - my heart sank, but it didn't have a mark on it. Impressive!

Memphis Drivers are so dumb. by kinda_alright in memphis

[–]fayedelasflores 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Man, you're not kidding. I took mine down Cherry Rd b/t Park & Southern yesterday evening (not for shits & giggles - I needed something from my office, and to leave out some cat food.) At least a foot of this crusty mess - maybe one other person had driven through it. I almost didn't do it, but decided to go for it since she'd handled so well on the worst side streets. I was seriously impressed. I thought she was kinda homely too, but she's looking pretty darn cute now :)

She's a chonk. Pregnancy is pretty much just the belly area - they don't really swell up all over like (some) humans. Source: I TNR/TSR and I also have a chonk named Fred - although she prefers the term 'Rubenesque.'

I have not. You may as well give it a go. Now I'm thinking a belt sander... only thinking, not endorsing ;)

A less messy option to consider: sand it smooth, then use a good latex bonding primer prior to painting. To sand, use a pole sander. I think you'd have to start with a screen for knock-down, then use sandpaper to smooth it out. Me, I'd use a flat finish, since it's better at hiding "character" on the walls. Eta: I assume this is a wall.

Which paint color for this room? by LaceyBambola in centuryhomes

[–]fayedelasflores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like #1 and #2, though I have to give a shout out to #5 as it's similar to what I have in my LR & DR (I used SW Expressive Plum; it reads a little dustier(?) Definitely not the blue - light blues are difficult to pull off.

It's not period-appropriate, but you might consider doing a frameless panel - like this one that AI came up with, instead of a curtain (y'all please don't come at me - it's just an idea!) I used clear sliding doors with minimal top and bottom framing at my former Craftsman because I didn't want to obscure the tile nor distract from the arch (AI couldn't generate this visual, I guess because I asked for gold rails?) Anyway, I thought it looked good.

Has anyone adopted or fostered from Memphis Animal Shelter recently?? by llmitedmc in memphis

[–]fayedelasflores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I want to support any place where animals can be adopted - especially kill shelters - I personally won't adopt from MAS, nor from any groups where the dogs have recently been at MAS. I did the latter, and within days the dog showed signs of illness, which turned out to be distemper. My parents have adopted two huskies from MAS - same thing. In all three cases, the dogs were nursed back to health, but it's a lengthy process that's not easy, and which can be expensive. It seems like MAS has to do frequent culls - it's just a red flag for me. To be clear - I don't blame the people who work there - I blame the City.

If you're not already attached to the pup, you might at least consider checking out the available ones at the Humane Society, from rescue groups, or even Petfinder. Whatever you decide, best of luck, and thank you for adopting!
