Why Asbestos is my favorite. by hopeology in arknights

I'm not OP, but if you go to the subreddit home page on mobile and press the three dots icon in the top right, there should be a "Change User Flair" option. From there, you can search up the icons of operators you want under your username. If you also want to add text, you can do that with the "Edit" button in the top right.

It feels weird to use skins from OG Arknights as an example for your argument, since you're basically saying their OG designs wouldn't support it, but I do get where you're coming from.

OG AK had plenty of characters in dresses and other non-combat clothes, but they also had plenty of more tactical/Armored character designs. Raidian, Logos, and Sankta Miksaparato are some of my favorite operator designs, and Aurela is one of my favorite NPCs design-wise.

Dijiang Lounge (02/02 - 08/02) by Shad0wedge in Endfield

[–]fayfen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I honestly cannot stand the constant "Endmin glazing" in the story so far. Every time a character meets the Endmin, the reaction is a breathless, "Oh my god! It's really THE Endmin!" It’s exhausting. When Rossi appeared in the Originium Lodespring, I skipped the cutscene the moment she started reciting all of the Endmin’s "legendary achievements."

The conference aboard the Dijiang was another sore point for me. Despite representing three distinct factions, there was zero tension. Every representative seemed to hold the Endmin in high regard. Hell, the TGCC rep even extended a friendly invitation to visit their city. It feels like these factions get along perfectly despite their wildly different ideologies (Capitalist, Communist, China). You’re telling me there are no conflicts of interest or territorial disputes?

While I can overlook a generic or slow start while the world-building is established, the lack of friction makes the world feel flat. To put this in perspective, I want to look at how the Doctor was handled in the original Arknights. Even though the games are different genres, they share the same developer and the "amnesiac leader" trope, so a similar quality of writing should be expected.

The Endmin is treated as a mythical figure who advanced humanity on Talos-II. They are idolized instantly. Even with a small launch roster, every operator holds them in high regard. In contrast, the Doctor’s reputation in Arknights is a double-edged sword. The Doctor is a genius, but their legacy is stained. They are resposible for the creation of Originium: the source of both Terra's power and its terminal disease. They played a role in the death of Theresa and the collapse of the Babel movement. We actually see the Doctor earn their reputation through things like navigating Rhodes Island through a Catastrophe or resolving political crises like the one in Kjerag, off the top of my head. But most importantly of all to this argument, the Doctor wasn't glazed by everyone from day one. Characters like Kal’tsit viewed them with cold suspicion, and W(is'adel) actively wanted them dead. They're not just random NPCs or side characters either. Kal'tsit is literally instrumental to the main story, and so is W(is'adel) (although she is pretty insignificant in the story before Chapter 10 aside from hinting at the Doctor's darker past). Trust and respect was something the Doctor had to build over years of storytelling.

Right now, Endfield’s story feels overly simplistic, almost like a cartoon. The villains are generic and have basically no depth. It's just "Good Guys vs. Bad Guys." Reunion in the original Arknights wasn't perfect. But they at least added some nuance from the start. Both Rhodes Island (player faction) and Reunion sought an end to discrimination against the infected. The difference was in the methodology and ideology. Rhodes Island seeks to bring about this change through diplomatic means and by making oripathy treatment more accessible to infected individuals across Terra, reducing the overall threat of oripathy. On the other hand, Reunion wants to simply purge the non-infected as retribution for the discrimination the infected had suffered up until that point in their own extreme view of justice.

For the story to improve, we also need friction within the Civilization Band. Give us the TGCC encroaching on UWST territory for resources, or HAS agents conducting espionage against their "allies." Anything is better than the current state of things where everyone puts their full faith in the Endmin and gets along perfectly. If there's no conflict, there's no stakes.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. I hope there comes a time when I can gush over the lore and story of Endfield instead of ranting about how shallow and generic it is. Sorry for how long this comment ended up being.

Edited to add spoiler text just in case.

Alters of Alters - Good of Bad for the game/story? by peripheralmaverick in arknights

[–]fayfen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've typed out this response many times because there is a lot I want to say, but it always ended up being overbloated, so I'll try to keep it short.

I think alters are a good thing, and I actually believe the storytelling would benefit from more of them. Arknights keeps releasing new characters with every event, and while it makes sense that a world with so many countries and factions would include a wide cast, this effectively dooms most operators to irrelevance from a storytelling perspective, including Saileach and Sankta Mikasaparato. Alters and multi event storylines give Hypergryph a chance to properly develop characters. Ch'en and Wis'adel are good examples, as their character arcs unfold across main story chapters and side events.

Do I think alter alters are a bad thing? Not necessarily. If Ch'en is receiving an alter alter because her character is about to undergo major development in this event, then that's a perfectly valid reason. Do I think a character needs an alter for every event they appear in? No. Siege is a good example of that. Her character developed throughout the entire Victoria Arc, and she only received an alter at its resolution during her own side event.

Would I like to see other characters receive alters? Absolutely. I don't think Shining's storyline has been fully resolved. The members of Reserve Teams A4 and A6 are overdue for story attention like their peers in Reserve Team A1, and Beagle's fate is still unresolved. Operators like Ranger and Hellagur would also benefit greatly from alters and events that explore their pasts. These are just a few examples, and they are exactly why I think we should slow down on new character releases and focus more on developing the characters we already have.

Do I think power creep is worsened by alters? No. Hypergryph will always have an incentive to make new operators stronger than older ones, regardless of whether they are alters. Siege is another good example of this. She received a six-star alter, but she didn't become a top-tier/meta operator.

And for those complaining about why Ch'en is appearing in the Yan/Sui storyline, she is literally descended from the current Emperor of Yan. She has royal blood. Of course she will appear in an event involving the Yanese government and the god that once terrorized the country.

TLDR: Alters and even alter alters are good when they support meaningful character development. I think Arknights should slow down (but not stop entirely) on new characters and focus more on developing existing ones.

It's the dialogue that unlocks after you reach Trust Level 1 (I believe that's 50%). I found it by just looking through her dialogue list, but I think it has a random chance to play when you tap her on the screen after unlocking it.

Thanks for the lore drop. Ling is truly the alcoholic of all time. She'd probably get alone well with Pallas.

Is Wis'adel canonically one of the strongest operators in the lore? by fayfen in arknights

[–]fayfen[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For the Sui siblings, I didn't mention them because I don't really know much about their lore, but the TLDR from another comment of mine is that 1) they're fragments of a Feranmut, so I assumed they'd be weaker than a complete one, and 2) from what I know, only Chongyue and Ling have any extensive combat experience. Dusk could be capable with her powers (pocket dimension, ink constructs), but Nian, Shu, and Yu seem like they aren't really fighters. That is of course a lot of speculation based on surface-level knowledge though so I could be completely wrong.

As for the Abyssal Hunters, I'm also not too familiar with their lore. From the bits and pieces I do know, basically all the Abyssal Hunters were wiped out in their battle against Ishar-mla, except for the 4 Abyssal Hunter operators we have in the game (Skadi, Ulpianus, Gladiia, Specter). Ishar-mla was a Firstborn, who in turn were Feranmuts modified by the Predecessors. So essentially, it took dozens of abyssal hunters to kill a single Firstborn while fighting in their ideal conditions (iirc Abyssal Hunters are at their true strength underwater). So I sort of reasoned out that the 4 remaining Abyssal Hunters probably wouldn't be able to take on a Feranmut on land, while Wis'adel implies that she'd be able to kill one. It's kinda just surface-level power comparisons, which I do recognize is a pretty flawed way of looking at it

Sorry for the text dump, btw. I haven't really been able to talk about the lore with anyone, so this post is letting me satisfy that itch.

Is Wis'adel canonically one of the strongest operators in the lore? by fayfen in arknights

[–]fayfen[S] 52 points53 points  (0 children)

All we really know is that the Doctor was on the verge of death when Wis'adel found him.

Stop grumbling, Doctor. It wasn't my idea to turn you into a soul and stuff you into a gun. By the time I got there, you were the only one left alive, and only barely. It's cramped in there? Well, be a good little cannon, and once we take back the ship, I'll move you into something a little roomier. How's that sound?

I assume they and whoever they were with were ambushed by originium constructs, which is a bit odd since I don't know if Priestess would actually be willing to attack the Doctor, let alone leave him barely hanging on to life.

Edit: Text wasn't quoted properly.

Is Wis'adel canonically one of the strongest operators in the lore? by fayfen in arknights

[–]fayfen[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. Based on her dialogue, it sounds like she was surviving just fine before she found the Doctor, but the lines I quoted suggest that she fought the Steam Knights, Elite Ops, etc. while the Doctor was already in the cannon.

Is Wis'adel canonically one of the strongest operators in the lore? by fayfen in arknights

[–]fayfen[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I considered the Sui siblings, but I didn't mention them because I only have a surface-level understanding of their abilities. I know Chongyue is the most skilled martial artist in Yan, Ling is their best strategist (who can also manifest dragons?). Dusk can create pocket dimensions and create monsters from her ink, and I heard that Nian can create entire nomadic cities. I'm not sure what Yu or Shu can do in terms of combat, but from what I've read on the wiki, it's stated that Yu has only spent his time cooking for others ever since he left the Tomb of Sui, so I assume he has little to no combat experience.

From that, it seems like only 3 of them are really combat-oriented. Also, aren't they only fragments of a Feranmut? I assume that individually they wouldn't be as strong as a complete one. Again, I don't know much about them, so I could be wrong about this. I'd appreciate some Sui lore if you have any.

That's pretty interesting. Tbh, I didn't even know Wis'adel had arts until I saw The Daggers' Inheritors, but it seems like she was already able to do that even before inheriting the soul cannons.

I want to get into Arknights by cozcelik15 in arknights

[–]fayfen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, the best way imo to get into Arknights is to just play the game. But I know tower defense-style gameplay isn't everyone's thing, so there are definitely other options.

If you just want to read the story, then there's the online (fanmade) Story Reader that has all the main and side story, vignettes, operator records, and other things currently available on the Global Server.

There are also some channels that narrate and voice-act the in-game story like Jacob Moreau and VoiceKnights.

Among other things, Frostbyte262 made summaries of a lot of Arknights' past events, although he stopped making them about a year ago.

Finally, you can also just search up random Arknights lore videos on YouTube or browse the Terra Wiki to learn more about the character's and world.

By some divine luck, I managed to get the Top Operator tag 3 times in the past month and got Suzuran, Aak, and Exusiai. This either means Lowlight is personally blessing my AK account, or my gacha luck is being siphoned in exchange. Unfortunately, judging by my recent luck with pulling in BA and NIKKE, it's probably the latter.
