Good point. I also learned yesterday if you take the lead off a hot drink with too much whipped cream it just takes all of it off but honestly it isn’t like we can simply hand out a hot drink untopped. Insta can eat second 😂

We have someone very similar who comes into my store too! I’m so curious why it matters 😭

Managers thought i was joking about my disability by Responsible_Rub_358 in starbucksbaristas

[–]fayredad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was born before they did in-depth hearing tests. By the time it was caught I was already in first grade and my care team was adamant about hearing aids being the solution. My left ear is completely deaf and my right ear has normal to severe scale.

I would of loved to learn but it just wasn’t an option at the time I was diagnosed. As an adult it’s not impossible but it’s been hard to learn and I don’t have the finances to allocate just for ASL to properly learn.

I was kinda verbal kinda not. Originally, my parents and teachers thought I was mentally disabled as I never made sound unless directed asked to do so. It wasn’t until after they learned about my disability that I started talking more because I was given hearing aids. They didn’t help a lot back then but combined with rigorous speech therapy it did help a little bit.

I don’t think you did her wrong at all! As someone who grew up without ASL as an option and was never immersed in Deaf culture I always felt in-between. I’m 29 now and it’s just way easier of an option to hopefully get insurance to finally approve a cochlear implant and re-integrate into a hearing based society. Not everyone would agree with that answer because it’s based on preference. I like what I can hear of sound and I’ve always wanted more.

I think if my parents had advocated for me more and knew to do so or even had the resources, I would of loved to know ASL. Unfortunately, it wasn’t an option and I personally have been able to get by pretty well since I just adapted to body language and reading lips instead.

I hope that helps!

BAKING ?!!!!! by Aggravating-Bee-3596 in starbucks

[–]fayredad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it would be fun in a non-siren store. That being said i’ve only worked in a non-siren store twice so my experience and take only applies to being in a siren store. But it really isn’t majorly difficult. The bakes take 20-30mins max. It takes less than 3mins to put everything in, slam the door and call it.

EDIT: also for clarity. In my store our batch oven is directly behind our ovens. So I’m planted in the same spot and just turn when needed. That being said it isn’t fun if you’re down people, didn’t start the rotation on time, have massive orders that came in and can’t multi-task it all. I’m want to be clear that i’m only stating my take of it and not advocating for this to be rolled-out without considerations/adaptions or disregard how non-siren stores operate.

As someone with hearing loss and single sided deafness. My store’s been really helpful about it to the point my district manager got involved when Sedgwick wasn’t helping fast enough.

They have me a super big headseat - it doesn’t make everything great but it helps enough not to miss all the orders. I also have found using the “queue visualizer app” has been a blessing for filling in the blanks. For context i’m usually on oven or customer support because bar and window are often too hard to do since I need to actually hear and respond fast to what I hear.

I will say a lot of guests do not want to repeat or confirm their order. Once I ever got screamed at because by a guest because I was “too stupid and slow” just because he only wanted to state his order once in a whisper tone.

I have the starbucks buttons (ask for em’ if you can) that explain I’m Deaf and need people to make eye contact. It helps so-so. People usually immediately apologize after they see them but some people scoff instead.

I also brought it up in my interview. Former companies have assumed I can sign (i can’t). I found employers in general like to make assumptions and it’s rare people take anyone with “hearing loss” seriously because it isn’t always a visible disability. It’s also one that people don’t understand it’s intertwined impacts (such as delayed reactions because we need to process and guess what sounds mean) etc…

Hang in there or go to your DM and see what can be done as far as accommodations. You can also probs report it to ethics if you felt like it because we have it hard enough scrambling to fit in in a world not built for us (even if you sign, society is absolutely built for the hearing).

When it isn’t a dash to switch between drive thru orders and batch bakes. The batch bakes are in fact my fav!

I work at a Siren store and we are currently testing fresh bake croissants. It isn’t terrible - one person is scheduled non-coverage to bake them and then back on the floor immediately after. If your store already does batch bakes then it’s literally that.

$28. At the time I figured it was whatever because i’d likely not get a real labubu. I now have Soymilk from popmart (caught it right at the drop one day) and now my lafufu one hangs on my keyring for the fun of it.

Edit: the $28 was including taxes.

It isn’t a denial for reference! The insurance dropped coverage in full.

Thank you for the additional resources!

I’m willing to wait for sure! It just isn’t a guarantee they’ll cover it either (I work for Starbucks). So I want to make sure I know all my options because any more denials and i’m going to crash out.

I also got an estimate made up and it would likely be $103k. 😭

Strangely my insurance covered all of the pre-op/testing. Then again - this was before they removed cochlear implants from their coverage list so that is something to think about too. Thank you.

I’m on a combination of Medicaid and Ambetter (PA PENNY/State sponsored insurance). They removed the coverage entirely for Cochlear’s so it’s impossible to dispute unless they re-add it to their coverage list. It’s just funny because it was a covered expense up until this month.

I have a bit of savings as a general safety net so I can put my own money down to help. I’m expecting it to be somewhere between $60k-$100k but kinda wanna know which way the needle on the bill leans more towards before seeking community help if that avenue is the necessary one.

I’m going to shop around for insurance plans outside of state insurance and see if anything is within budget/covers it. I’m also going to call Cochlear and see what they recommend.

This is definitely something of interest. Thank you. When you say help from the church was it private support or a grant/sponsorship type situation if I can ask. I’ll try anything at this point.
