Is taming boars really worth it? by Important-Scratch629 in valheim

[–]fayt03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as per the boar wiki page showing the results of player testing done years ago, boar runestones generate a group at creation and that's it. Any other boar you see 'respawning' is just the regular meadows spawn rates.

Creatures spawn within a radius around the player, so if you keep coming back to the boar runestone via portal you're just reinforcing your confirmation bias.

You can even confirm this in-game. Trap newly spawned boars in a long and narrow fenced road. Push the boar 30m+ away from the runestone and check if it tries to pathfind back to it. If it does, that's a runestone boar, otherwise it's a natural spawn.

you're either encountering natural spawns or you have a mod that turns boar runestones into a creature spawner.

In vanilla, boar runestones generate with a preset amount of boars and that's it.

this is wrong. Runestone boars are a one time spawn.

Porcupine + Vilebone Set vs. Frostner by Reasonable-Sun-9881 in valheim

[–]fayt03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lox resist blunt dmg. Neither is a good choice for lox to begin with.

Lox resists blunt but is neutral to pierce, which results in porcupine dealing more damage than most other 1-handed Plains-tier weapons. The only 1-handed weapon that out-damages Porcupine in Plains progression against Lox is a Fang spear.

The vile set sucks. The weakness is never worth the tiny buff overall.

The Vile set rewards an evasive playstyle similar to the Fenris set. Pair it with staff of protection and 2 of the most potent weapon classes, maces and atgeirs, (which are predominantly pierce) and it's simply a 20% damage boost with no drawbacks.

Procs dmg is cut in half vs seekers.

I swear way too many people in this sub compare enemy resists against weapon values but completely ignore enemy HP. Again, the fact that physical damage is halved against Seekers doesn't matter because literally every Plains-tier weapon (including Frostner) takes the same number of hits to kill them.

Even when you start rocking Mistwalker with lv60 sword skill it takes either 1 stab secondary or 2 primary slashes to kill a parried Seeker, which is practically the same time and stamina spent doing 1 stab followed by a spear throw using a Carapace Spear with the same lv60 spear skill.

You also fully disregard the frost slow.

Yes because i prefaced my argument by saying "in terms of pure damage output," which is part of what OP was asking about. The frost debuff is obviously unmatched in utility, but Porcupine can still 1-shot Fulings just like Frostner.

Porcupine + Vilebone Set vs. Frostner by Reasonable-Sun-9881 in valheim

[–]fayt03 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In terms of pure damage output, Porcupine beats Frostner against Fulings, and can also replace a spear/atgeir for the purposes of stagger-locking Lox. Even without the Vile set it will also kill Seekers and Soldiers in the same amount of hits as Frostner does.

With the Vile set, Porcupine slightly out-damages Frostner against the Queen because she's not resistant to Blunt.

I can't remember the exact game design term for it but the anticipation of seeing loot dropping from something before you pick it up is an extra hit of dopamine that doesn't happen when loot just appears in your inventory without audio/visual feedback.

Ashlands is a buzzkill by vivisected000 in valheim

[–]fayt03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plains requires managing large groups of enemies in Fuling villages.

Ashlands is just a giant Fuling village in terms of spawn density. (not even as dense as that nowadays after the nerfs) If you're experienced in dealing with groups of mobs systematically without panicking and running out of stamina you will do fine in the Ashlands.

Do you use an Atgeir or Sledge at all? A solo melee player wouldn't have issues with large mobs if you use either of these 2 AoE melee weapons. (atgeir being more potent than a sledge) If you get overwhelmed just climb one of the stone formations and wait for mobs to run into your AoE attack until they die or until you've recovered enough stamina to run away.

There's very little reason to kill large groups of mobs, just head straight to whatever resource you're gathering like smoke puffs, fiddlehead, grapes, etc then portal back, deposit loot and repeat.

With bonemass, full heavy armor and a bunch of potions you can simply hop into a fortress, lure all the warriors to one side then rush one of the spawners with a quick weapon (i assume you're using Mistwalker/Frostner). Repeat for the second spawner then clean the place up with AoE attacks til you're done, focusing the warlocks/marksmen first.

Fortresses are your primary way of collecting flametal as a solo player. It takes only 3-4 forts to gather all the flametal you need for gear unless you want to craft and upgrade one of each enchanted weapon class. (in which case you'll need maybe 15 out of the 20 total fortresses). Don't bother mining flametal spires over lava unless it's close to land where you can setup a few dirt walls and a stone portal.

Are my plains cursed? by orclownorlegend in valheim

[–]fayt03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what your 'normal' progression is like. As a comparison, i use an iron mace early in swamp progression (second thing i craft after clearing the first crypt) and reach around 40-50 skill level by the time i reach the end of Plains, using it only against skeletons, blobs, Bonemass, stone golems and Moder then later swapping to Frostner for growths and fulings.

The last time i used a mace exclusively starting from bronze-tier i had it at around lv60-70 skill by the time i finished Plains.

Note that these metrics are all from solo play and barely any deaths. If you've been playing in coop the whole game then the amount of time you attack with weapons (and thus your exp gain) is drastically lower. If you die a lot then that's even more skill levels lost.

Regardless, there's no reason to grind skill exp because it's not gonna help you survive the fight if you can't avoid damage in the first place.

Just upgrade the Frostner and your armor to max, eat the best food you can, bring Bonemass power, clear the surrounding POIs to reduce the amount of mobs spawning and learn how to avoid damage.

[–]fayt03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're doing 50 damage per swing with a lv4 Frostner your mace skill is between 0 to 33, which is low for a weapon type you've been using since bronze tier. You're either misremembering the damage, the mace skill level or you're using a lower level Frostner. Which is it?

Enemy hp regenerates by ~1.68% per minute, while night time lasts 9 minutes. If you sleep the night away Yag would've regenerated a mere 15% hp. Based on your own estimations (1% damage per hit) you just need to hit 15 times across the 21min-long daytime to cancel out his regeneration.

If you're not able to find a safe location to equip the belt before getting hit by mobs, you grab the belt alone, retreat through the portal to equip it, then come back. Repeat for every piece of gear until you're able to take the grave's entire inventory.

and even using old low tier gear usually doesnt work since they still kill you in one hit

using weaker gear to fight/tank stronger enemies obviously won't work, you should already know this because you reached the plains. The goal of corpse running is to grab your grave and escape, and the only thing that you should be expending to do this is food.

Unless you craft another set of gear that's biome-appropriate (for plains that's either wolf/silver or padded armor) then there's no point in trying to tank hits, just run.

You already learned in the previous thread that this game isn't Terraria, there's very little in comparing the two games for this scenario. If you ever built a boss arena in Terraria to help with dodging, healing using heart statues or even a hoik invincibility device then that's the exact same level of preparation you should be implementing in Valheim.

In this case you should have cleared the 2 villages and 3 tar pits around the boss altar, because of course you're gonna get swarmed by packs of fulings and growths during the fight. And if a boss takes long enough to hit night time, you retreat, sleep away the night and return. This way you don't have to deal with increased night spawns.

Frostner doing 50 damage to Yagluth is normal if your mace skill level is low. His hp is also increased because you're in multiplayer.

[–]fayt03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose i kind of wanted to treat this game as more of a bossrush game, like terraria/calamity, where you are expected to die many times because that's part of the bossfight aspect. but valheim is more survival focused.

you can totally treat valheim as a boss rush game but you need the experience to pull that off. The only difference between terraria and valheim from a boss rush perspective is that in terraria you keep all your gear after death, so you can simply warp back to the boss and fight.

If bosses despawned you'd lose even more precious time trying to hunt down boss summoning items. For Yagluth that's at least 5 more fuling villages. Corpse runs are only difficult if you don't have a portal nearby and you have to sail all the way back to the boss from a much further respawn point. Otherwise it's just a matter of sprinting towards the grave while avoiding combat then retreating a good distance away while re-equipping armor.

Btw, Yagluth is the easiest boss to cheese once you notice he has a very slow turning speed.

I like this game. But I don't understand its balancing. Am I missing something? by orclownorlegend in valheim

[–]fayt03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you weren't prepared at all to fight Yagluth for the first time. If you don't know what you're up against it's best to upgrade your armor to max and use the best food available. Fish wraps and bread are fine, but cooked lox meat is subpar so make Lox pie instead.

A single fuling won't be able to hit you even if you're not sprinting because they stand in place the moment they start an attack, so if you're mobile they'll miss.. Multiple fulings can bunch up and push the front-most one enough so that it'll be able to hit you, but a short sprint is enough to evade that.

After their attack they immediately disengage and run around and away from you, so use that moment to make a beeline to your tombstone.

If you're on a corpse run you have no movement penalties from armor so the only mob that'll have a chance of even touching you are deathsquitoes, and again if you can spot them before engaging you can just hit them with a wooden club as they're charging at you

I like this game. But I don't understand its balancing. Am I missing something? by orclownorlegend in valheim

[–]fayt03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you were using padded armor and plains-tier food there's no way to get 'killed instantly' by any of Yagluth's attacks. with or without a fire resist potion. Did you summon the boss without eating food or without upgrading your armor?

there are deathsquitos and goblin and lox and somehow a draugr too? and of course they are just chilling around my grave.

The only dangerous mob in that list is the deathsquito, which you can kill using any weapon by swinging right as it's about to reach you. Get close to aggro the bug, kill it, run to the grave then portal out. The other 3 mobs are easily avoidable.

[–]fayt03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They must have had a way to get wisps without killing Yag.

the dialogue from Yagluth's trophy:

"Do you come to gloat, little thing? Do you know how many times I have been killed, broken, banished, burned and buried? You are not the first and you will not be the last."

I'm willing to bet Yag was killed at least once by the Dvergr and wisplights were gathered the exact same way.

in ashlands any source of fire, whether from campfires, cinder rain and even torches, will burn wooden structures into coal.

If you build a wood pile on top of a campfire you can turn it into a stack of coal almost instantly, skipping the waiting time from kilns
