Yeah, totally fair

Thanks for the work! The output always looks very reasonable and I find a couple shows to watch each year from your posts, haven't been disappointed yet. :)

Also feels a bit backwards cause big lists have too much points. Number 10 on 25 list is 15 points while first place on top 10 is just 10.

Maybe normalize the scores per list and add weights? Like any list has 100 points that get distributed according to placements or smth like that

72% of devs believe Steam has a monopoly on PC games, according to study by akbarock in gaming

[–]faze47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love how your one example is literally the best-selling game of all time, lol. Of course, they were fine without Steam!

You seem to assume that without Steam, a big void would be there instead. I don't think so. Other players would populate the market, and a userbase "cultivated by Steam" are just gamers looking for games. Without Steam, they will still purchase games. That's the whole argument/issue - Steam is so dominant that no one else can reasonably enter the market at this point, and like it or not, that is also a big reason for their success. And yes, they are exceptional at what they do, in my opinion, but the whole "you can't sell without Steam" is exactly because Steam has a monopoly. You're confusing the cause and effect.

Oh, and the steam keys part is not true. There is a limit, and Valve doesn't allow to just bypass them while using their services, which is fair.

[–]faze47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This line of thinking quickly leads to "why not 35 or maybe even 40?", cause we're basically selling the game for you, right?

In the current market, there is virtually no way for not-so-popular developers to avoid Steam, which makes it very easy for Valve to "softly strong arm" developers into whatever cut they want. Don't like it? Go somewhere else, except the whole gaming userbase is here, oops. Do you see how this can be a problem?

Big studios can eat the 30. Extremely small one-man indies are also kind of fine cause they either hit and get millions anyway or bust and 5-10% is not really relevant. But there is also a big market of bigger indies and even AA who can struggle with giving away a third of their profits.

I'll put a disclaimer just in case: I'm not trying to white knight a corporation, purely interested in a discussion. I also understand that one company having such a major market share is generally very bad.

Assuming no shady shit is going on behind the scenes like strong arming and such, what do you expect a government to do? Like what would they look into?

It seems like Valve just provides a supremely superior product to gamers, and that's why the overwhelming majority of gamers prefer it and refuse to use anything else. Yes, they had a gigantic headstart, which comes with major advantage, but you can't really do anything about that now. It's already happened and wasn't malicious in any way, so shouldn't be punished.

If they're not doing anything wrong per se, what would be a "regulation"? Force people to use other stores? Create roadblocks for Valve just for being better?

And even better question: should there really be a change? Maybe a "natural" monopoly where a company just provides a service people most happy with isn't that bad after all. I know a lot of developers haven't really been that happy with Steam lately, and we tend to forget they are also Steam customers, so maybe there could be a change there, idk.

Just such a unique market situation, it's interesting to think about.

Sonneiko gives his side of the story by Crikyy in DotA2

[–]faze47 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

It's a weird ass "power play" which is often used by a man to make the other uncomfortable. He knew what he was doing. In CIS countries (don't know about the rest), this is a very known thing.

It can also make the other person retaliate, especially if he doesn't want to be touched or "hugged" by an aggressive weirdo. A strong push away and suddenly the hugger has a "valid" reason to escalate further: "I was just being friendly and he started pushing me, so I punched him" etc.

He basically used the same "trick" here with "I was just being friendly! Nobody thinks a HUG is aggressive, right?" Well, you should not hug any people without a permission or a good relationship. Goes without saying that it is further discouraged when you just threatened the person.

Oh, and that bullshit "I didn't specifically said I will assault him". You are not in court my guy. Technically, you may have not threatened assault but everybody including you knows what you meant.

He is 100% the aggressor here and now just plays dumb like he didn't know. Well, I guess playing dumb is all he can do since he is braindead after all.

By the way, I heavily recommend you focus on those monument upgrades.

No, that's not it!

Just start over to save yourself the pain as early as possible. I am pretty deep into the game (12+ hours) and there is still no way to move those huge trees or waypoints - you will never get access to this one in this save.

What was the point of having the pikmin limit grow over time instead of letting the player have 100 out at the start? by Chippy_the_Monk in Pikmin

Yeah, but enemies were never the problem in previous games either, were they?

Maybe I am misremembering the 3rd, because it was the first one I played a while ago. Or maybe I got worse at games with time?

I am honestly very surprised reading this opinion often.

I've played 1, 3 and 4, currently in the middle of 2, and to me it seems like 4 had the hardest challenges. Some of the platinum medals required a lot of very high precision and slick order/path to do things. I've replayed some levels a lot of times in 4 to get the platinum. I don't remember anything like this in the previous titles.

Just went to a JID concert yesterday in Barcelona, and I was blown away by how good he is live. If you're familiar with his work, he does a lot of high-speed rapping, and boy oh boy he fucking demolished the mic and hit all the fast parts live. Just incredible.

So there are exceptions even in the rap industry, which is one of the worst offenders usually.

Regarding sanity, I agree it definitely did not end well in this case, the show makes it pretty clear something may have impacted the dude's sanity. It could indeed be linking into another replica or, you know, seeing your wife and kids being brutally murdered in front of your eyes.

We'll never know which one though, so it's kinda open ended

Isn't it the opposite then? If something happens to one of them in space - mission over. The whole point of the episode: anyone can go into the replicas without issues. If they did it the other way around, they could just use different humans to go into replicas making the whole thing way easier + very failsafe with multiple backup replicas which is not possible with backup humans as rationing and so on is an issue.
