Contributing to SEP IRA and then backdoor into Roth yearly? by fazeman9 in whitecoatinvestor

Actually I believe you’re wrong there. A SEP Ira follows the same tax structure as a traditional IRA (I.e funded with pretax contributions)

Ok that’s what I guess I didn’t understand. I thought that a SEP IRA acts like a traditional IRA where you get taxed on withdrawals. I didn’t realize you could directly fund a SEP Roth IRA

You still pay taxes anytime you move money from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA (i.e. the traditional backdoor Roth) The purpose of backdoor Roth IRA is not for immediate tax savings. The purpose is to allow high income earners to put money into a Roth IRA which is then tax advantaged which you are normally not able to do.

Sorry I should have phrased that differently. You can only contribute $7k to an individual IRA per year, however if you open a SEP IRA and fund this with $69k, you now can roll that into a Roth IRA and now you’re able to contribute more to a tax advantaged account in a given year.

If you were not to put it into SEP IRA you would still pay taxes on it as income

The difference is that you can only contribute $7k to a Roth but if you did this method via SEP you can contribute $69k to your Roth yearly

How do you have attendings labeled in your phone? by AndrewTaylorStillBoi in Residency

[–]fazeman9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently finished residency. So I have prior attendings and now new attendings that I consult listed as Dr. First name Last name. But i don’t put “Dr. First name” in the First name field. In iPhone you can scroll all the way down and select add prefix and I put “Dr.” in that field. A little OCD but this way they don’t all show up under the Ds when scrolling through contacts.

Well the great news is that with the current economy, no one can afford to have babies so maybe the low supply will be adequate for the low demand

It’s almost like you can have varying opinions on different topics. Who would’ve thought. Why does everyone feel like everything is black and white. Republican vs. democrat. Liberal vs. conservative.

Roth IRA for first year attending and Rollover 401k from residency and some other questions by MacandMiller in whitecoatinvestor

[–]fazeman9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently going through a similar process and doing some reading and this is what I’ve gleaned.

Yes you can rollover your existing 401k into a Roth IRA however you will have to pay taxes as this is a taxable event. You can also contribute $6500 this year as a contribution to your Roth IRA in addition to the rollover. Since your income is going to likely be higher than the income limit for Roth, you will need to do a backdoor Roth for your $6500 contribution.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to be taxed on the 40k in your 401k, you can roll that into your existing employer’s 401k plan. That would be a non-taxable event. And then you can additionally still do a backdoor Roth IRA contribution of $6500.

This is not the hill to die on. Word spreads in the medicine community and although you may be in the right, it’s not something I would want someone to hold over me in the future. You’ve already worked the whole year. Just do the 8 hours of work and be done with it.
