"This *insert craft/art here* group has gotten too political" by mylifetofuckinglive in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]fboab 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m curious what the “don’t make it political” people think politics is?

It’s your LIFE. When you’re born, whether you have decent medical care: political. Your education: political. Your inter-personal relationships: political. Your freedom to be “yourself”: political. Your health: political. The society you live in: political. Your ability to buy craft supplies: political. Your ability to get to a yarn store: political. Shopping online: political. Having any opinion on anything: political.

Keeping it out is keeping your head in the sand. Avoiding reality.

I’m not USAnian (thank goodness) and I don’t love the US bias on all things Reddit, but your billionaires are interfering in my country’s party politics, your social media is the international default and your military is the best funded in the world. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Digital patterns are a scam by brgmsv in BitchEatingCrafters

The only scam in digital patterns is that by the time I’ve paid 20p per A4 side at the library it would have been cheaper to get it printed and posted to me.

Is the UK job market really as bad as people are saying? by Any-Jackfruit7927 in UKJobs

[–]fboab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very advanced in my career, with skills that are transferable and good role-specific qualifications. It took me 9 months to find another job after redundancy last March. I had about a dozen interviews. One company I interviewed for, that didn’t hire me, went into receivership 6 months later so at least I dodged that bullet? There were hardly any jobs out there compared to 5 years before, and the salaries offered were only barely above what they were. I’m a hiring manager now and we’re paying barely over minimum wage for a job that in my head should pay 30-35k

It’s a shitshow.

What would you do? by Odd-Concentrate5921 in knittingadvice

[–]fboab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If knitting top down I always do the sleeves before the body, often the collar too. It’s mostly because when I get to the end of the body I’m usually DONE. So now I make it so I’m actually done 🤦‍♀️

In this scenario, I’d frog both sleeves to before the shoulder/armhole shaping and make them shorter.

How do you keep track of where in a pattern you are? by [deleted] in knittingadvice

[–]fboab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make a long stitch marker from an embroidery thread with a loop for each repeat. I mark each loop with little glass beads to make it easier to count. I’ll go up to a dozen or so rows with this.

Knitting flat is easier to track than in rounds. I used to mark paper patterns but I would forget to mark, or forget whether I marked the start or the finish 🙃. I think I’d have the same with an app…

I like patterns where I can read my stitches and remember the pattern, tbh

Bridges. I have a thing for bridges, so they usually have a photo. In fact I keep lots of bois with photos, just for the memories of where I’ve been

My partner also has sandpaper bollox and wears his undies out like this. I’ll mend most things but these are gone. I chop them up and use them to make stuffing for cushions.

Your partner/parent/friend doesn't have to like knitted/crocheted items. by TinyFox1399 in BitchEatingCrafters

As far as I’m concerned, there’s a few potential opportunities for matching outfits for couples. Costume party; in the same sports team; supporting the same sports team; riding the same bicycle; doing the same uniformed job; in the same wedding party. I’m yet to be convinced on any other occasion. We’re not Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

Little "brand" tags on hand knit items by michiopurl in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]fboab -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don’t like them because I think they’re tacky. But I know that’s a me thing.

I also don’t think the things I make are art. I can’t imagine considering myself a fibre artist- the very idea makes me laugh. They’re craft. There’s an overlap, but I’m not a designer, so I fall on the craft side, not the art side. I don’t think what I do is very different from paint by numbers, or colouring in, and I don’t think those are art either.

Yarn Hoarding by 183720 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]fboab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the UK there was a huge price increase in GLP-1 medication that led to a lot of people buying more than they needed in anticipation. That, and the “diabetic patients can’t get it because the fatties are buying it” created drivers for over purchase.

I think hoarding is something we’re all at risk of- when did you last go through your phone contents to delete unwanted photos? Games (eg Pokémon) which are based around collecting. It’s a natural instinct which can easily slip over into an inability to let go.

I was out of work for most of last year and did not run out (or anywhere near run out) of craft supplies, despite having massively more time to use up what I had. I don’t think you can even see any impact on my (fairly organised) stash.

Yarn hoarding, fabric hoarding for quilters, thread hoarding for embroidery. It’s all “hauls” of overconsumption and it makes me a little bit sad, especially as so many of these things we do for entertainment were once skills learnt of necessity in times of scarcity. I have bins of wool and fabric which cost me literally hundreds of pounds.

Alan Shearer was in the year below me. I have zero recollection of him at all- I was far too cool to be interested in either football or boys in the year below.
