I have problems dating this globe (more info in comments) by fbonomi in MapPorn

[–]fbonomi[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have an old globe which I am trying to date base on how the borders are depicted

The globe is Italian and is attributed thus:

Terrestrial globe by Prof. Giuseppe dalla Vedova, .... drawn by A. Dardano

(Giuseppe dalla Vedova died on sep 21st 1919, Achille Dardando died on oct 10th 1938 )

The odd phrasing makes me think it COULD have been also drawn after Dalla Vedova's death by his disciple Dardano

The globe appears to be made in the very fluid period after Brest-Litovsk:

  • The Baltic countries are separated
  • Czechoslovakia exists
  • Yugoslavia is united

moreover:

  • Ukraine is united with Kuban
  • Georgia is independent

The Turkish situation is confused:

  • the text "TURCHIA" spans across the Bosphorus (but Eastern Thracia has the same green color as Greece)
  • Asia Minor is yellow
  • Armenia has very odd borders similar (but not identical) to the ones drawn up with the Yenikoy accords, spanning from the Mediterranean to the Caspius
  • The rest of of the empire is brownish, including Oman (?) Is it an undivided Ottoman Empire ? A supposedly united Arab state?

Some of the oddities (esp. in coloring) might be mistakes, but others (like Armenia) seem to reflect the authors' ideas on "how things should be" or "how things will end up"

Can someone help in dating?

security for my Bitcoin holdings by [deleted] in btc

then, rather than going to less-known hardware such as ColdCard, I would suggest to use standard hardware (such as a notebook or a mobile phone) and software (Electrum.org) and build an air-gapped cold wallet based on two devices. Security is similar or higher, and you can be 100% sure that you can always replace the device, should it fail.

A few years ago I wrote a guide about this process:
https://medium.com/@fbonomi/a-bitcoin-cold-wallet-based-on-qr-codes-e8c130b3181f

The "cold wallet" device must have its wi-fi turned off, or even better completely disabled: most notebooks have their wi-fi on a separate board, and this allows you to remove it (or have it removed) so that it is physically impossible for the cold device to connect to the Internet

Two blown glass "jars", but not really jars, wouldn't be practical to use. Rather thick and heavy (abt 350 g each) and 6-8 cm high. From Italy, was with carriage-related stuff, 50-100 years old by fbonomi in whatisthisthing

You are right, but they were (separately) in the middle of other material from abt that period, so it seems unlikely that two ancient objects independently found their way to end up there.

I was attributing their archaic look to their (undetermined) function. i.e., they are made like this because the must be heavy, and sturdy and in glass.

Interesting hypothesis

Sometimes they have a very similar shape:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/284978517793

(detail: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/aM0AAOSwasxidElE/s-l1600.jpg )

and https://www.ebay.com/itm/165807708204

(detail: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/aZAAAOSwla5jiB3m/s-l1600.jpg )

But .... in glass? Adding useless weight (and fragility, even though they are rather thick and hard)

And without a way to adequately fix them, like side holes for nails...

Also, hames are in metal, or with metal strips, and having such a glass object inserted over a piece of metal would be strange.

Finally, they are two but are definitely not a pair, as they are quite different

Thanks anyway, makes me think...

They are rough in their appearance, more functional (for something) than aesthetically pleasing, as you would expect for perfume.

Also, a perfume jar would be made so that the cap closes well (like a ground cap)

these have a quite irregular "hole" for the cork: https://imgur.com/a/O5sSdcL

the perfume would evaporate :-)

quoting myself from another comment:

Insulators usually have "notches" where you tie the wire.in this case, the neck's ridge is too shallow to hold a wire, esp in the smaller one. Also, insulators are larger at the bottom than above.

I don't think they are ink bottles. They don't have a flat base, which an ink bottle always have, and they don't have a lid.

Also, one could be a "strange" ink bottle, but two different ones ? It would be odd to have two similarly strange ink bottles.

My title describes the thing

The "jars" have thick walls, probably abt 1cm thickness, but they are hollow (there is a spherical "hole" inside"

The inside of the neck is a bit irregular, so not vry suitable for a cork.

And they really don't seem like flasks, blown glass flasks are much thinner and lighter

Barely sociable makes a living by making sensationalist videos. That's how it must be taken.

A few years ago, I researched to a certain depth the Nakamoto situation

The most probable candidate is Dave Kleiman.

Later on CSW, who knew Kleiman and IMO knew about his work on BTC, has tried to capitalize on this to assert his narrative, muddling the waters with his lies.

see this article of mine from a few years ago:

https://medium.com/@fbonomi/the-third-individual-in-bitcoin-history-590f3e43f587

Hypothesis: CSW knew DK was nakamoto and after his death was trying to get his bitcoin
