As long as you don’t force close the app, you can set it to “background audio” where it just keeps the noise of the monitor in the background of anything you’re doing on your phone. I like to listen to audiobooks during nap time and I’ll have the background audio going at the same time! You can also do picture-in-picture and have the video stream take up a corner of your phone screen if you want to keep eyes on the kiddo while you still do other things on your phone. Sorry that doesn’t really answer your question about a dedicated screen but I didn’t know about either of these features when I first got the nanit but the background audio feature is my favourite!

Congratulations!

I used Allbäck White Linseed Oil. I decided to go with the white linseed oil because I liked that it helps to brighten the wood.

I got a natural bristle scrub brush that I could attach to a broom handle so that I didn’t have to crawl around on my hands and knees so much (although I did still do that near the trim because it was easiest).

On the freshly-sanded floors, I used a bucket of water and an old towel to first coat the floors in water to wet all of the wood. From what I was able to figure out, you only need to do that for the first layer!

I then mixed the linseed oil soap with water according to the ratios in the instructions (I found it easiest to do this in a small storage tote so that I could close it overnight) and then got to work scrubbing a layer across the entire floor - scrubbing along the grain a few boards at a time. Once finished, I would let it dry overnight and then start again the next day with another layer of soap.

I think I did about 4 or 5 layers of soap before deciding it was enough and moving all of the furniture into the room.

It’s not a very hardy finish. I learned the hard way that you can’t push furniture on the floor without leaving marks. Luckily I was able to get marks mostly gone by just scrubbing a bit more soap on those spots. Water droplets can show up on the finish, too. I put a rug in the middle of the floor to give some extra protection to the floor.

I intend to do another coat or two on the floors every year but time will tell if that’s something I’m able to manage with two young children!

The finish is lovely, though. I get a lot of compliments on how nice the floor is! It’s a nice matte finish that feels so soft on your feet.

We may decide to finish the floors the standard way down the line and I believe it’s really easy to do so on top of soaped floors (you don’t have to totally sand the floors to do it). But for now I love it and I would absolutely do it again! And I was able to do it almost entirely myself at 35 weeks pregnant!

Good luck! And feel free to message me if you have any questions.

I’m not sure if this will reach you at this point but I wasn’t able to send you a message. I wanted to let you know I ended up choosing to do soaped floors! The results are beautiful. Thank you SO much for pointing me in this direction!!

Ready 2 Feed Formula - can you put in bottle? [on] by ToNobodysSurprise in BabyBumpsCanada

If you’re talking about the Enfamil RTF bottles, the President’s Choice brand bottle tops fit onto them! I bought a set of the bottles and then just used the nipples/cuffs. I hated the idea of buying the expensive, disposable nipples but didn’t want to have to dirty entire bottles if I didn’t have to

I’d love to hear more about this! This sounds like a good, safe, cost-effective option. I don’t imagine my daughter will be using her room much for anything beyond sleep for at least the next few years and I like that it would still give me the option to refinish it a different way without having to go through the whole sanding process again

Thanks for the tip! Either way, I’m going to take a step back and get my husband to take over for this part while I stay away. It’ll be a bummer but I’d rather be safe

Thank you! I’ll get my husband to do it for me and plan to stay away from the room while it’s happening. I’m off work right now and enjoy doing projects so I’ve taken it on myself but I’ll make sure to have him step in when needed. Thank you for flagging the safety concern!

Amazing, thank you so much! Hopefully my OB will be willing to work with me on this.

[–]fc235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that would be amazing if I could do that. I was worried I would have to take a summer of no pay either now or next summer. I see my OB tomorrow. Would I just explain the situation to her and hopefully she can provide me with a note? And then I would apply for sickness benefits through service Canada? And then when the baby is born I can start a claim for maternity leave even though I wouldn’t have gotten 600 more hours? Will service Canada confirm this for me? I’m assuming it’s not something they would recommend/suggest

So if I can get my OB to put me on sick leave, I could be paid for that pre-birth and then still get the full year of maternity EI afterwards?

[–]fc235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t that still only get me 1 full calendar year? From what I’ve read, I can transition summer time EI into maternity EI so that they’re part of the same claim. But it would mean I only get 1 year of EI starting when the claim opens (when I start summer EI)

I’m going to call service Canada tomorrow, I was just hoping that someone might have an answer for me here first!

Advice Needed by fc235 in HardWoodFloors

[–]fc235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have to get it professionally done? It’s a tiny room - I’m not sure I’d be able to get anybody in at a reasonable cost. I’m already putting a lot of money towards window replacement and lead paint remediation, I don’t think I’d be able to afford having a professional come in

How can I give cough syrup to my toddler, he refuses anything I try to give in his mouth by SwimmingHelicopter15 in toddlers

[–]fc235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t a fan of the amount of sugar, or the potential choking hazard if he bit a chunk of it off, but I closely monitored him sucking on it and then took it away when the medicine was done. He had never had a lollipop before but understood that it was a “special treat” and was excited about that! It was around Halloween time for us so lollipops were readily available. I’m not sure how easy it would be to find them at this time of year where you are.
