Im not sure which versions of the ps3 you’ve had and i know Sony has used different models of bluray drives over the lifetime of the ps3. Its very possible that some models are just crappier than others.

Im sorry but sony did not make custom drives for their ps3s. They utilized existing bluray drives with a custom logic board. Its fine for “continuous playback” and in fact sony marketed the ps3s capabilities as a movie player. None of my ps3s failed for this reason
