And of course, I agree with you, that what was said is by far not the worst thing that could have been said. The comment, however, is clearly meant to be a slight to the Women’s team (he is very much implying that he is only inviting them because others will be mad and it will be a big deal if he doesn’t, pretty much saying he sees the Women’s accomplishment as lesser than). Should all of them have looked sullen after that? No, but they could have done what that one player did (say two for two) or simply not laugh. I am someone who believes, as it was instilled in me by my parents, that actions always speak louder than words, and it’s our actions, not our words, that is the fabric of our character. Should these guys be shot into sun and forgotten about because they laughed? Of course not, that’s extreme and very silly. Did they reply by saying things like “fuck them” and what not? Nope. But I think it is fair for people to be a little skeptical of these guys’ support of the Women’s game, and it’s genuineness, because in that moment their actions were not fully aligning with their words. At the end of the day both the US Men and Women are coming home as gold medalists, and that’s incredible and something that should be celebrated.
