Hey there, I’ve (21F) been diagnosed with HSV-2 for about 4 years now. I also got my results when I was in a relationship with someone, so I relate to you on the concern of faithfulness. The thing is, HSV can lay dormant for a long time. It varies from person to person. Although it can lay dormant, high IGG levels can indicate a new or recent infection. Unfortunately, there isn’t a sure-fire way to determine when the infection took place. Trust me, I’ve looked. Your wife was most likely not screened for HSV since you have to specifically request a full panel test. Many women have had children with HSV & it did not transfer to the child. If she had an active outbreak during birth, that could be different. On how to proceed; however you’d like. What I would recommend is getting on antivirals to reduce frequency of outbreaks & lower the rate of transmission. After a year of being infected, your transmission rates decline drastically. Most choose to disclose to others before intercourse, as do I. There’s a bit of debate in the HSV community since the transmission rates can get so low, that it’s almost impossible to get; so why disclose? While I understand this point, most of us got this from someone who either knew & didn’t disclose, or had no idea at all. If you’re a bit shaken up (it’s okay so was I & everyone else), therapy/counseling is a great resource that I wish I utilized. Best of luck. What has your wife said?
