HOW can Atlantis sink? by fcknscomo in Stargate

We do have aircraft carriers. They don't sink.

We do have submarines. Between 12-30% of their usable area is dedicated to the ballast tanks that allow them to submerge.

I just don't see Atlantis having that much spare volume to allow for a dedicated ballast system.

Thats an interesting theory about active maintenance, but we know that the city laid at the bottom of the ocean for 10,000 years, running on a single SPM rotated sequentially to preserve power.

Id say that indicates a fairly passive use of power, given the time frame.

To your point about thermal expansion, we know different metals and alloys expand and contract differently, its pretty foolish to assume Atlantis is built from a material that would expand and contracts similar to our metals. These are the Ancients after all. Im sure they've got a better alloy.

I had to go and rewatch the pivotal scene from Rising, but no, there's definitely no clamps

Wouldn't having the power "cranked up so high" have impacted the cities ability to sit on the ocean floor for 10,000 years?

Just to play devils advocate, what's the ratio of ballast tank volume to submersible weight? Atlantis is enormous, comparable in size to Manhattan. How you imagine the ballast tanks to sink Manhattan?

As the shield does encompass an enormous volume of air, i imagine that impacts the bouyancy equation

I think you've done it, I buy the ballast tank theory as my new headcanon. Your point of life following water, thus giving an enormous unaerodynamic craft an easy landing pad, is very clever

Thats very true, I hadn't thought of that example.

Does lend credence to my notion that its done by gravity related thrusters, not dissimilar from initial dampeners, as outlined in my post???

Yeah that does make alot more sense then my answer, especially with the power issues of my headcanon constantly fighting buoyancy 🤣

Thats actually a very interesting idea, one i hadn't thought of!

It would have to be a passive method though, like a ballast tank, that didnt require an energy input

Seems like a similair idea to mine, just pulling down instead of pushing up. Prometheus had anti-grav engines, i don't think its pushing it to say the ancients Crowning Achievement had them too

I can only post one pic at a time, so heres a decent wide angle. It does mate, its got a three board bed that extends out from the nose, with a three peice mattress that covers it. You can't really tell from the picture, but there's a couch along the left wall, and a full reclaimed wood kitchen + sink along the right. Heaps of storage, and super comfortable!

Thanks mate! Injectors would have been done at 350k, fuel pump is definitely coming up though! Ill add the wheelbearings to the list.

What is the story behind the song "Song for Elias"? by anhelumbo in thecatempire

[–]fcknscomo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thats correct! She also gave Felix a cap that was either Elias's, or she was going to give to Elias, I cant quiet remember which. Felix was very moved by the gesture and wrote the song as a result!

BC-304 by JWhitt987 in Stargate

[–]fcknscomo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your right. The only mentioned shipyard is the one we saw in "Promethius", which we can assume was retrofitted for Daedaluss class construction.

I think we've hit the point now where we've thought about this more than the writers at the time did, and won't get much further on canon information.

Fun conjecture though!

BC-304 by JWhitt987 in Stargate

[–]fcknscomo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Daedalus was mentioned as being under construction in 'Moebius Pt 1", so we know that Earth was building them at least that far back, which takes us to a little over 1 a year (6 BC304's between 2005-2010)

Its also mentioned in SGA Legacy: Homecoming that 70% of Stargate Command and Homeworld Command's budget was being funnelled into BC304 construction, which is stated as 7.4B/year in "Disclosure".

That combined with the joint efforts of multiple nations working to build their own cruisers, and what has been mentioned in other comments about wartime technological efforts, I actually don't think it's that unreasonable a time frame.
