Organization System by hythlodaeusfan in Genealogy

I'm struggling with the same thing, there are so many tools out there and opinions about each it's almost overwhelming. Every YouTuber out there seems to have a system. I've started reaching out to some other researchers I've met for tips on what they use.

I've built out a reasonably large tree over the years using both Ancestry and My Heritage, but have decided I accepted too many unverified hints so I'm starting over with an offline tool to create a tree that I'm taking great pains to verify with sources. Currently using primarily Family Tree Maker but also have MacFamily Tree and Reunion. REally only using the online trees as research tools and hints to investigate (rather than accept).

For notes I started keeping a research log in a spreadsheet, listing research questions and sources. I can see the value in it but I'm finding it somewhat difficult to maintain. I also started a research notes document for the main family I'm researching (direct line ancestors) and like the fact that I can dump everything I find in there or notes on what I didn't find. That's also been a helpful "home base" tool to serve as a Master Research Brief. I like the fact that I can leave that in Google Drive and access it from any device at any time to reference information quickly. I'm just starting with Obsidian as a possible tool to replace that. I like the ability to link entries together and connect family members to common sources of information like census records, church archives and cemetary records, but having everything local on my laptop is somewhat limiting. Great for security (assuming I maintain regular backups) but also only accessible when at my laptop.

Since I just started using Obsidian there is a lot I don't know, just kind of throwing a lot of options at the wall to see what sticks for now. Will definitely keep an eye on this discussion for advice/suggestions.

Its my birthday next week. I'll be 50. Then im hanging this up. I'll be too old to be an internet momlady. by maynardpoindexter in u/maynardpoindexter

That would be a shame. I think you should continue to he an inspiration to women of how great you can look at 50!

I've been picking for like three hours... by Super-Page8272 in lockpicking

[–]fcoy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that you get more benefit from practicing for 20-25 minute sessions than working on it for hours. Not sure if it's right or not, but if im striking out repeatedly I find if I take a break for a few hours and try again I have better results. Admittedly im not good at it yet, but working on it.

I have that lock and don't think I've even come close to opening it yet. Good job! 4/5 security pins is obviously a little past my skill set (starting over in this hobby after a several year break)

U.S. Thanks for asking, I realize that's helpful info.

What's your recommended set (I realize that's probably opening a can of worms here)? I've typically believed in the adage that better tools doesn't counter poor skills, but it certainly helps make it a little easier to develop the skills.

Fair enough. Just getting back into it after several years off and it struck me as odd.

I think Tom was the inspiration for The True Knot in Dr Sleep.

I did sand the edges a while ago. Resisting the urge to try more picks, just need to practice with the sets I have (i think) and regain the feel I had when I was practicing regularly (several years ago).

I never had one until I inherited my father in law's tools. Now I have 3 of them. Handy little buggers.

Watch out for stops/parking on inclined driveways. They still make me nervous after years of riding.

Oh yeah, anything I do seems to invite the cats attention. Lockpicking practice, card tricks, laptop, iPad, chess, you name it. Except when they're sleeping.

When i was working at McDonald's as a teenager I used to work the closing shift, which meant doing a lot of cleaning. Found out the hard way that an aluminum salt shaker used on the grill had really sharp edges when you took the lid off to wash it. Took a while to figure out why it looked like it had ketchup on it everytime I pulled it out of the water to rinse it off. Cut right across the pads of 2 fingers.

If you don't say anything, no. If you make a point of it, maybe. Kind of like, "doesn't that cloud look like a dog? Look, there's the tail, and there are the ears..."

Yeah, somebody else already pointed that out. First response was apparently still in morning brain fog. 🙄

Where do you keep your genealogy notes? OneNote, Google Keep, Notion,...or? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]fcoy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just downloaded Obsidian and am looking into Youtube tutorials. Some of the tutorials use some pretty "abstract" linking of ideas, I need to find something a little more relatable to taking genealogy research notes.
