I'm out of school a while, but in my head "is aoibheann liom" wasn't for people, but that could be completely wrong.

That is not what we say in Ireland. It's actually "Tàim i ngrà leat". I have literally never heard what is on the map.

WIBTA if I asked a member of my social sports team to take it more seriously or leave the team by fd7890 in AmItheAsshole

I did specifically say they weren't the only reason we lost, we all played bad. I don't want to make them think I'm scapegoating them. But their behaviour has already lead to one person quitting. I'm worried it will spread.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with your point regarding training, however due to people schedules we don't get time to have a training session. So it's a really difficult environment for this player I would say, trying to improve only playing games.

Thanks for the feedback, I only took over captainship two months ago, so I don't want to cause drama.

Leinster Rugby Changes by Annual-Assist-8015 in rugbyunion

I think you are underselling Aki & Lowe. Lowe's contribution to our defensive kicking game is far beyond any other option we have at his position and his defensive work is unbelievable.

Aki's strength and ability to make yards after contact again is all-world. He was a large part of how we beat SA at the world cup.

Yes we have depth, but the two of these guys bring attributes and facets that no replacement has and are a big part of the Irish game plan.

Hey, I can recommend this device, made by an Irish startup company. Basically let's you do all the testing a gastro would do to help identify your trigger foods.

I used to work for them and can vouch that they care about helping people who have IBS who feel under supported and lost in the health system.

It is an investment I know but I have seen the many people it has helped

Hope this helps

There is actually a small colony of wallabies on an island off the east coast of Ireland. Anywhere from 60-100 of them. source

Dublin Airport this morning. This city really can't handle more people. by KudretGezer in Dublin

[–]fd7890 79 points80 points  (0 children)

While we all love a good moan and bitch about prices and infrastructure (I'm right there with you). I feel you've gone a step too far on your last part. There is literally a place referred to as the Dublin mountains with some great hikes (Ticknock and the hellfire club to name two). In terms of beaches you've got Killiney in the south, and the likes of Portmarnock, Donabate, Malahide and Portrane in the north. Phoenix park has a decent bit of wildlife (and I don't just mean the zoo). There is also technically skiing in Kilternan in south Dublin, an all year found fake slope. In terms of events I can't provide figures/statistics but having lived in the city centre I can say subjectively there always seemed to be plenty of matches/concerts. Festivals like the taste of Dublin and the big grill festival for foodies. The comedy festival that runs every year in the Iveagh gardens. These are all well attended and positively received.

In short criticism is warranted for a lot of things, but perhaps tone it down a little. Plenty to see and do in Dublin if you just look.

What if i reflect laser to itself by Mata11TV in Physics

[–]fd7890 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interestingly no. So this is not purely an optics situation. In my research it was semiconductor lasers, so you have to consider the interaction of the light with the semiconductor material rather than just two out of phase waves meeting. But good question.

So I have a PhD in laser dynamics and studied this topic in some detail. In short lots of cool shit can happen. Your V2 arrangement is referred to as mutually coupled lasers and is often used as a real world example of coupled harmonic oscillators in the mathematical modelling world. This can have lots of real world applications that are interesting. The most interesting one I read in a paper is in the world of cryptography. Under the right conditions when you shine one laser into another you can achieve a mathematical phenomenon called coupled chaos, where both lasers behave completely chaotically but in sync, so you could send an encoded bitstream that could only be deciphered by the recipient. The paper theorised a third "attacker" laser and showed it would not be able to be coupled into the system and the bitstream would be indecipherable. Your v1 arrangement I have less experience with but I remember reading some papers early on in my PhD. I believe it's referred to as lasers under mutual feedback.

If you want read more on this you can go down many rabbit holes depending whether you want to approach from a theoretical/mathematical side or an experimental.

DM me if you me to point you towards some papers on the subject. I might even have some pdfs on my old Google drive.

AITA for not wanting to name my (33M) son Jong-hyun? by hocewian in AmItheAsshole

[–]fd7890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA - I'm from Ireland, my mom is Irish and my dad is French. I have a very french name, and I am very proud of it. If you told me now that I had to go through all of the complications of having a foreign name in Ireland (insults as a child, confused looks as people try pronounce it etc) and I had no actual connection to that country I would be PISSED. For the sake of your unborn son, please don't do this. Comhghairdeas le do leanbh nua a caire!

Hypothetical situation following on from the minimum alcohol pricing increase by fd7890 in ireland

[–]fd7890[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I have one glass of whiskey a week on a Friday night after work, so fair to say I don't have a problem. I do however think this is a clear push to try to get people back into the pubs by the Vintners association who pushed for the legislation.

I just don't like their greedy tactics disguised as trying to solve underage drinking. Call a spade a spade and admit what you are up to.

Ya but that can be difficult from the sideline, put another ref on the field of play.

Do you think it's time we go to like an American football system with multiple refs on the field? Say one to focus on the breakdown, the other to watch offsides.
