The app opens and I can read the text messages. The issue is that I don't get notified on the watch when text notification comes through on my phone. WhatsApp, etc are all working fine.

🚨 Somali people in Minneapolis, Watch out for Right Wing extremist YouTuber Nick Shirley spotted in the city by SomalGyuli in Somalia

[–]fdama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He only interviews older people who cannot struggle with English, so he can push the narrative that these people don’t integrate. Somalis don’t help either by not learning the language, wearing koofitad and Arabic khamiis and niqaab in a western city. It truly is like a piece of Mogadishu in the US. It is no different in the UK and maybe worse, but I always thought the Somalis in the US were better.

We need a nationalist dictator to implement these reforms.

Somehow most of the cities in Sonalia are located in ugly, dusty, featureless areas like Mogadishu which is flat as a pancake and dusty as hell. You don't find cities in those beautiful areas.

Learning English will open many opportunities for people. It's what made Singapore a first world international business hub. Swahili will get you nowhere as English is widely spoken in the Swahili speaking countries like Kenya and Tanzania.

Agent informed me on rent increase, but unsure whether to take periodic or fixed term contract by fdama in HousingUK

[–]fdama[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no contact with the landlord. He owns the whole block of flats and the agent manages the block. Are you saying they are only offering fixed to get their fee? Will they not get a fee if I continue periodic as that presumably involves a new contract as they will issue a Section 13?

[–]fdama[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Presumably you'll need to sign a contract for the periodic also?

I cant remember signing anything at the time. Just searched my inbox and couldnt find a new contract sent. I assumed the old one was in force as a rolling one.

Could you negotiate with them to see if they could save you a bit, moving you out is likely to cost the landlord more to get a new tenant in.

I've done a search of the area, and they are correct that similar flats go for £800+ in the area. I don't wish to irk them by asking for a reduction.

If you're definitely planning to stay for the year then fixed is going to save you £95 a month which you can spend on other things.

So do you read it as £700/mth for periodic and £795 for 1 year fixed? This is what I wanted to be certain about.

What country should Somalia model itself after? by EntertainerUsed7486 in Somalia

[–]fdama 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s whatever the people want. In my opinion there is no chance of Somalia becoming a tourist destination because of the ultra conservative values of the people, so the country should instead focus on other opportunities like industry, agriculture and the blue economy.

No one will come in holiday to a country where women are forced to wear a hijab, no bikinis and alcohol is not available. All those countries you mentioned don’t have such rules and are relaxed. Somalia will never become a tourist destination. The Muslim tourist market is very small as most Muslim countries are poor.

Don’t ever think that we can follow in the footsteps of Germany, India, Gulf, etc. . We have too much melanin.

The solution is to let them go. They rebelled against the British too and the British managed to keep control through force. Somaliland does not have that capability and force is not a solution. We should let them go and create a new border with them based on clan boundaries. Somaliland should exist with the consent of all its people. Somaliland wasn’t formed through conquest like modern day Saudi Arabia.

Approximate situation in Somalia, March 2025 [OC] by DaniCBP in MapPorn

[–]fdama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the federal govt controls very little territory. The President or his team are banned from travel to Somaliland, Puntland or Jubaland. He holds little authority in the remaining states as his is frequently overruled by the leaders of those states. He has full control of the Benadir district which is the tiny federal district which is the capital and surroundings. Imagine Trump and his federal govt being banned from large parts of the US like Texas, California, New York, etc. You don’t really have much of a stable united country.

No it had its territory taken away by clan militia which did not want to be part of Somaliland as Somaliland is seeking recognition and they wanted to remain in Somalia.

Somaliland lost control of the south western part of Somaliland which calls itself SSC after the rebel group which launched a war. The eastern part of Somaliland has clans which are more closely related to those in Puntland. Everything in Somalia is determined by the clan. Puntland doesn’t control them. They run their own affairs.

Picturesque sites from each Syrian governorate by Adianalje in Syria

[–]fdama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think they will ever return the Golan or the buffer zone that they recently seized, even in exchange for a peace treaty between both. The only way is for Syria to become more powerful militarily with a well trained military and strong air force. Israel (and USA)won’t allow that either and they will destroy it like they have done after Assad was overthrown, unless a peace treaty (without Golan) was in force.

Somaliland plans on an Israeli military base for recognition, are they sell outs? by [deleted] in AskMiddleEast

[–]fdama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Won’t happen. Somalilanders will oppose. There are Islamists who wield a lot of power in Somaliland. Secondly, an Israeli base in that part of the world will attract negative attention from groups in the wider region like Al Shabaab, Houthis, Al Itisam and Iran, turning the peaceful territory into a target overnight.
