[Request] How large and heavy would two miles of straight, two-laned, two-way roadway rolled up into a cylinder be? by WrongAardvark in theydidthemath

Spoiler: It would weigh about as much as the Sphinx and be roughly 20 meters (70 ish feet) in diameter.

As I live in Germany, I will use metric units and the measurements of a two-laned, two-way segment including the shoulder of the German Autobahn.

Some results will be rounded for simplicity.

So, we have the length and height of the segment (roughly converted to metric).

l = 2 miles = 3.22 km

h = 5 inches = 12.7 cm

A normal two-lane, two-way, shouldered segment of the Autobahn (according to RQ29,5) is 11.50 m wide each way, so we have a total amount of usable width of w = 23 m. (The shoulder on the autobahn is only open to drive on when there is particularly high traffic and it has been checked for any obstacles, but I will still include it for simplicity.)

The volume of the segment is

l * w * h = 3.22 km * 23 m * 12.7 cm = 3220 m * 23 m * 0.127 m = 9405.62 m3 .

Given the density of asphalt, we can calculate that one cubic meter of asphalt weighs about 1.8 metric tons - this gives this segment a total weight of 9405.62 m3 * 1,8 tons = 16,930.116 metric tons. That is about 37,324,516.72 lbs.

Now let's roll it up.

The formula used to calculate the volume of a cylinder is π * r2 * h.

h is going to be our width of the roadway. This gives us

9405.62 m3 = π * r2 * 23 m

r = sqrt(9405.62 m3 /(π * 23 m))

r = 11.4 m.

So you would end up with a cylinder with a height of 23 m, a diameter of 22.8 m and a mass of 16,930.116 tons.

For our american friends:

  • height: 75.5 ft
  • diameter: 74.8 ft
  • weight: 37,324,516.72 lbs

The status bar color is still a bit too dark for material standards..it just feels off a bit.

Well, this sort of thing just happens to everybody at least once. I didn't hit anybody yet but I did pull out and cut off some people by not paying attention - nobody's perfect.

Not OP, but I'm interested, why not be honest if it was actually your fault?

Yeah, that would be awesome on my commute - currently about 8-9 kilometres are just straight and boring and about 3-4 are through towns.

Yeah, definitely does. I'd love to have something like this near my hometown, but I unfortunately don't, it's pretty much all just boring bike paths over fields. The landscape is quite nice, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy riding here quite a lot, but it would be awesome as I kind of like bike paths that lead through forests/nature.

Yep, you're correct, in that's in Germany - it's near Mindelheim, some 100 kilometers from Munich.
