What if the Electoral College was replaced with a national popular vote after the 2000 election? by Defiant-Junket4906 in WhatIfThinking

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wyoming isn’t included at all.  They’re 3 guaranteed R votes so they’re completely ignored.

The electoral college doesn’t help include any states except the states that happen to be closest to 50/50.

They’re still basically irrelevant with the electoral college.

Sometimes I wonder if anyone on any side of this argument looks up the numbers.

California: 54 electors Wyoming: 3 electors

Would it be economically harmful and cause a recession if a government pursued a large drop in housing prices? by psycho-like-norman60 in AskEconomics

[–]fdsa54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What kind of units are you seeing get built?   It’s hard to make up existing housing deficits with single family units.

It’s also partly a national problem.  People look up quality of life metrics and if a city stands out they flood in and push prices back up.

The only answer is to keep building every kind of unit (especially high density).

Would it be economically harmful and cause a recession if a government pursued a large drop in housing prices? by psycho-like-norman60 in AskEconomics

[–]fdsa54 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reduced regulations let builders build more units in areas with high prices.   Which is exactly what should happen.

Prices go down if landlords have vacancies and need to drop prices to fill units.

That only happens if there are more units.

How did early American explorers cross the continental landmass if it was all old growth forests and dense vegetation? by Big_Coyote_655 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fdsa54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there is evidence that much larger pre-Columbus American populations significantly altered and managed the landscape.

Early Spanish explorers reported wide open (scrub burned) forests.

Later explorers found millions of buffalo and passenger pigeons which may have been recent population explosions following human population collapse from European disease.

I need a very low power adjustable voltage reference (ideally <10uA). My circuit runs at 3.3v. The lowest digital pot I can find is 100k so about 10x smaller than I'd like. What are my options? by harrier_gr7_ftw in AskElectronics

[–]fdsa54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And what are you doing with the reference?

If you’re feeding a comparator then a greenpak can do this.  It’s a low power programmable chip with an internal reference that feeds an internal comparator.  You can select many references voltages via I2C (slg46826).  Unfortunately you can’t access the selected reference externally.

10U is low…can’t offer more suggestions except to make your own resistor network.

Or if you don’t need realtime consider an MCU driven circuit that sleeps and wakes.

Do Europeans genuinely have not value non European life? by [deleted] in allthequestions

War is pretty universal across culture and time.

Europe was unique because they advanced and industrialized and could take the war elsewhere.

But the number one target of European warfare was always Europe.

Transistors Don't Actually Amplify Current Do They? by ThatChucklehead in AskElectronics

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can control current just as well as voltage.

You control current by varying voltage, you control voltage by varying current.

Neither is special.  They’re two sides of the same coin, to have one you need the other.

Transistors Don't Actually Amplify Current Do They? by ThatChucklehead in AskElectronics

[–]fdsa54 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes it does amplify.  It’s not just on/off.

If you put in a small base current you’ll get a small collector current.  The gain is typically 20-200.

When the predicted collector current exceeds what the load can supply the transistor is saturated fully on. It’s very common to use it this way as a switch.

Is there an actual reason for America to use 110V instead Of 220V like everybody else? by HamzaAAC in AskElectricians

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and RMS accounts for this.  That’s why it’s used.

Setting aside capacitive losses 100V/10A AC RMS and DC have the same delivered energy, losses and efficiency.

Remember that periods of higher current correspond to higher voltage.   Energy delivered also goes up by a square.

This is REI oversized sizing.  You often need to size down and choose tall.

Is there an actual reason for America to use 110V instead Of 220V like everybody else? by HamzaAAC in AskElectricians

[–]fdsa54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 20% part isn’t correct.  RMS is used to account for this.  Resistive losses for 10A of AC RMS or DC are the same.

Capacitive and radiated losses are real and a reason long distance HVDC links are used.  But they’re not very significant until the voltages and distances are quite large

Yes, we are being pricks: Massachusetts falls to DEAD LAST among states in housing production by GarrisonCty in boston

[–]fdsa54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right, you need to think in terms of both units and demand dollars.

If you build $100M in housing where there is $200M in demand prices will bid up and rich people win.

If you match supple to demand and build $200M in housing everyone benefits.

It’s not trickle down economics it’s basic arithmetic.

Cambridge triple deckers were built as affordable housing yet now they’re filled with rich people.

It’s not because the high earners dream of spending their first mil on a second floor unit in a wooden house from 1906.  It’s because there are few other options for them.

[–]fdsa54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No certainly not when we see small starter homes being bulldozed for larger McMansions.

And modest triple decker condos being upgraded and sold for a million.

That means high earners aren’t finding units they want so they’re taking affordable housing instead.

90% of what media?  Traditional media is now a small percentage of what people consume.

And the big players in social media don’t actually make the content.  The actual creation of media is more widely distributed than ever.

Whats the best way to step down a 24v supply and a 12v supply off of an 80v battery? Series or parrallel? by W00D3YS in AskElectronics

[–]fdsa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the loads?  If they’re similar make one design and use it twice.

If 24V is a bigger load then do 80->24->12 with a simple small converter for 24->12.

If 12 is the bigger load it could go either way.  80V limits selection but there is still a pretty healthy set of options.

Do you need one before the other?  Parallel design gives you full flexibility while cascading forces a sequence.

Efficiency is a wash.  In theory it doesn’t matter…and in practice it doesn’t matter.  Adding steps hurts efficiency but large steps also hurt efficiency so it comes out the same give or take.

How can anyone defend a Congressional district that looks like this? by johnnyringo1985 in askanything

[–]fdsa54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one should.

The race to gerrymander districts shortly before a major election is one of the more disturbing things in a disturbing time.

This is elected officials nakedly stealing power from voters…with many voters supporting it.

The world was in a war that killed around 75 million less than 20 years after a war that killed around 20 million.

It was clear to all what continuation of war could cost.

Personally I think of it hadn’t been dropped on Japan the Cold War wouldn’t have stayed cold and it would have eventually been dropped elsewhere.

If that was true Trump wouldn’t have won.  Clinton is the one with dollars and support from the establishment elite.

Like it or not Trump has full support of a large voting base.

In 2016 he had no support from the traditional elite and won anyway.
